Sarah Parrish was really good. Superb. I was a bit bored with the slow pace of the episode though...

Oh dear. And this season was going so well...
There's nothing wrong with a storyline about a beautiful imposter entrancing Uther into marriage in order to gain control of Camelot, but by making the villainess a troll the whole enterprise descends into a dismal procession of unfunny scenes about rotten food, bad smells and fart gags. Considering he should be the focus of the story, Anthony Head seemed bizarrely under-used. And the talented Sarah Parish misguidedly believes that because she's appearing in 'a family show', it means she can give a dreadful gurning performance that would only be suitable in a children's panto. Any eight years old watching probably loved it.

I thought it was an okay episode. It was nothing special, but it was entertaining enough. I wasn't bored by it.
It wasn't clear to me however what her ultimate plan is, once she marries Uther. Does she plan to continue the charade, which seems quite an effort, or will she reveal herself as a troll once she is queen? But then she can't expect people to accept her. So it seemed kind of a stupid plan to me. Oh well, next week will probably bring answers. |

This episode reminded me of some bad Nu Who episodes, comedic but annoying with it.
Sarah Parish, was she brilliant or awful? possibly both. They do seem to have 1.5 of an episode and padded it out though.

Well I think Sarah Parish was the best thing about the episode. She looked like she was having a whale of a time playing the troll, and I enjoyed it right along with her.
As for the rest of the episode - a mighty Meh. A two-parter should be more that a one-parter stretched out to two episodes, which is what this seems to be. Unless there's a couple of great twists in part two, but there was no sign of that in the Next Week trailer.

I really like Merlin, last series was great.. this series is starting pretty strong but this troll two parter is dreadful in my book... to the point i'm not sure wether I'll tune in next episode. I have liked Sarah Parish in other things but had she not her reputation I wouldn't rate her very highly as an actress on that episode alone...
I dunno perhaps i was in a bad mood at the time |

Did Colin Morgan suddenly get his hair cut then regrow it during this episode? His hair's noticeably shorter than usual in the scene where he finds the spell to reveal the troll's true nature, then later goes back to being longer.
