The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett... all about the building of a medieval cathedral. A big fat wallow of a book, and quite enjoyable so far!

Just finished 'Sly Mongoose' (Tobias Buckell) and it's great! Loads of cool space opera goodness which is just what I'm after, although he has a nasty habit of building the tension up and then drawing a conclusion in one small sentence that you really have to look for... That aside though, I really enjoyed this and a full review is over Here.
Next up is either Brian Ruckley's 'Blood Heir' or Kay Kenyon's 'A World Too Near'. |

You've got a good choice of what to read next, then! I need to get started on my Kay Kenyon ... sigh ... too many ... good books... out there...
I've just finished Lord of Snow and Shadows by Sarah Ash which I was actually really impressed at. After a conventional start it very (very!) quickly moves on and gets better. Interesting twist on the vampire myth (although this is a relatively small part of the story) in an Epic Fantasy setting. Plenty of fighting, politics, and potential for the next books in the series, even though Lord of Snow and Shadows could be read as a stand alone ![]() Review of Lord of Snow and Shadows! ~Chris I currently have: Tad Williams' The War of the Flowers, the Return of the Crimson Guard by Ian Cameron Esslemont (which, I suppose means I have to catch up on my Malaz history!), and a bunch of good new sci-fi which has happily arrived just when my mood required it

Currently reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and keep wondering why one character just doesn't go to a book shop and buy the sodding thing! Just finished the first part and moving onto part 2 tonight

Every few years I rejoin the SF & Fantasy book club so I can get their introductory book offers so I will shortly take possession of:
Shadowplay, Before They Are Hanged, Voice of the Gods,Priestess of the White,Last of the, Matter and the Serrano Succession. So that should keep me busy for a while! I always cancel my membership when I have satisfied the minimum requirements as it is usually cheaper to buy books from Amazon or even Waterstones. |

I'd vote for moving on and reading something else, but you should definitely read A Feast for Crows at some stage. Given that books 1-3 form the "first part" of the saga, and books 4-7 will form the "second part", are lot of fans are waiting for book 7 before reading beyond ASOS. Not me, though!

I don't think the last two will need to be split in two, but that could just be me being naive. I believe that he has said that he's adding no more new POV chapters post-ADWD, so I think this will cut the size down; I also have no doubt that at least some of the current multitudinous crop of POVs will be culled, hopefully reducing the size further. As the stories start to converge once more on Westeros as well, once Dany gets her arse in gear, I think there will be less need for splitting things up geographically. Fingers crossed so hard that I will probably develop early-onset arthritis, obviously.

It's set in a world where both magic and technology work, although not at the same time. When magic is up, no tech works, and when tech is up, magic doesn't work. The point-of-view character, Kate Daniels, is a mercenary who clears up magical problems, who finds herself investigating the murder of her guardian. In doing this, she finds herself caught between the Pack, and the People. |
