I finished Guy Gavriel Kay's The Sarantine Mosaic and all I can say is "Wow". As a fantasy, this is perfect - nice, symmetrical story, satisfying ending, beautifully poetic, dreamlike prose, emotionally resonant - quite simply the best fantasy I've read in ages. George R R Who??

It's a shame Ysabel is picking up such mixed reviews.

Anyway, am currently reading The Highway Code, Passing Your Driving Theory Test and Driving Theory Test Questions and Answers.

From which I'm sure you can guess what I'm doing Wednesday morning...

I'm re-reading Catherine Webb's excellent The Unusual and Extraordinary Adventures of Horatio Lyle, in preparation for reading the sequel.

I'd forgotten how good it is !! :P

Just started my review copy of Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch, probably one of the two or three most eagerly-awaited books of the year (and if GRRM's Dance with Dragons slips to 2008 it probably becomes the most eagerly-awaited fantasy novel of the year)

I have. I enjoyed it. I don't think it is a great book, but I thought it was a good book and a very good first book.

I had actually cracked the cover of the upcoming Slan Hunter (despite the small throwing up a little in my mouth that the Widow Vogt would give this effort to Kevin Anderson), but then today, I got my arc of Kushiel's Justice, which I have been eagerly awaiting and have delved right in.

You're making me want to read them again! Man, they were good. Do you think they topped Lions?

Isn't it just? I guess it's not surprising, sounds like he's operating outside his usual territory. Ah well, one less book to read at any rate.

Good luck with that! The theory test was a breeze when I did it 3 years ago, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Hurrah! Got finished Locke Lamora last night. Gorram brilliant it was. I especially liked the Interludes dealing with his childhood
But I'm gutted most of the characters were killed off.
Started Margo Lanagan's Black Juice this morning. Read the first page and promply fell asleep. Nothing to do with the book though!

I had won a copy of this in a raffle last year - only recently read one of the stories: "Yowlinin" a strange tale, but beautifully-written; quite dense prose, requires concentration.

They don't have that rich, dreamlike quality that Lions, Tigana and Arbonne all had, and the structure was a big skewered by being split into two volumes, but in every other way, yeah, I think it topped the lot.

I will probably end up reading it anyway. Reviewers can be wrong, you know...
