What a f* joke. I can't really believe that they keep cancelling ANYTHING that I like that appears on TV. Anything with a remotely interesting, weird, or mysterious hook isn't being watched by the yanks!! What the hell is going on? Are we going backwards to this kind of shit? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Endings_(TV_series) Is the world going sodding mad? You know what? I really think that if I was pitching a thoughtful fantasy/ sci-fi series at the moment I'd have a secret plan to actually have brand new arcing plots every year. Hence Awake would be a one series show that didn't drag out the mystery but an actual story, something quality like one of the best fantasy novels you've ever read only on the screen. As it stands my wife doesn't want to watch episode 2 of Awake anymore due to the lack of resolution. I'm wondering if you lot have a view of the contempt that American show makers seem to have for A. People who don't show up in the ratings, and B. The people they are screwing over across the world everytime a show they have made money off in international sales is cancelled yet again with no resolution. I for one am sick of seeing people on the forums saying they won't even watch a show till it gets confirmed as renewed. I can understand their frustration, but it is a pretty pathetic day for tv in general when we can't trust shows to be given time to bed in or pick up. It has got to the point where new interesting shows will get shit viewing figures just because no-one wants to put the time into watching something that will go to the wall and screw them over as viewers having wasted their time. I'm not saying resolution is all important in all tv shows, but for genre shows it is HUGELY important and I for one am forseeing a current death of our medium on tv. Remember over ten years ago when SFX had to struggle to spin an issue out of Highlander and War of the Worlds (TV series)? I think that the rot is setting in with new shows. No-one is going to bother to give them a chance, and networks on the back of trying to copy LOST ad nauseum are going to give up on genre tv altogether. I mean 'Happy Endings'??!?!!?! The blurb sounds even worse than what you are imagining it is like. Cold ******* Feet redux. Tastes like upchuck on my lips. Last edited by Richard L; 12-05-2012 at 02:41 PM. |

You may want to watch the language again
I doubt that those outside the Uk who only watch shows once they're renewed are the main facvtor in cancellation. International sales a re good but not the be-all and end-all of TV income - I think that no one wants to watch it is a far bigger problem. I tend to agree the Lost format is running dry now - when I said earlier that I didn'ty like mystery it's that annoying sense of resolution never happening. I agree just tell the story not run odd hints and further twists. At the same time I think mainstream is possibly a bit out of love with the genre - but I also believe make a really good show then people will come. At the moment though looking at the previews nothing is jumping up and down at me. Despite that perhaps mainstream TV has to rest a bit with shows like Lost Girl, Walking Dead and Gamer of Thrones there is a hell of a lot more variety but none of those shows would probably get on a mainstream show without change in tone.

The makers of "Awake" (WB so Univsal get nothing from the show in sales) are now free to sell their show to another channel in the US (as did "Cougar Town" when NBC cancelled them, they went off to TBS). And even if no-one in the US wanted to buy the channel the producers could still continue to sell the show Overseas (as did "Baywatch") Last edited by DaveC; 12-05-2012 at 01:48 PM. |

Isaacs is pretty popular here in the UK. I enjoyed his 'Atkinson' series of mysteries, and I was really looking forward to 'Awake'. Thanks for the comments, I will try to keep the language in check, I should be fine because there is nothing left to cancel on me apart from 'OUAT'. I think Awake could be made by another network, put into a different slot and perhaps put into a higher gear ala the latter series of 'Fringe'. Thanks Dave for clearing up how TV works and why American networks seem to act contrary to worldwide liking for a series, answer there is no money in it for them. Makes sense I guess.
I for one will continue watching, enjoying, and trying to figure it out for myself. Lets face it with 'Lost' NO answers would have been a better ending than what we got. I will just enjoy the ride. Last edited by Richard L; 12-05-2012 at 03:11 PM. |
