Selkie, m'dear, your barnets are (like my own, I suppose, but in a slightly different way) transformative.

What kind do you favour: artificial fibres, Yak (most theatrical wigs and beards are Yak, the downside of which is that if you get cought in the rain all you can smell, all bloody day, is...ahem...a Yak's undercarriage), or China Hair (real human hair, from China - or India - where hair-farming is big business, but very expensive)?

One of the things which makes most men's bad rugs noticeable is their waterproofed nylon sheen.

I've never tried a wig and i dont think i ever will, unless its for some kind of fancy dress/cosplay purpose.Although the wife did shout me through to see an ad on tv about hair restoration.I've been bald for too long,i dont know if i could grow it again.

HH,that first wig actually suits you.

Hair restoration or transplant is another thing that I don't understand the point of. The hair transplanted is your own, admittedly, but a leg hair or a chest hair is still a leg or a chest hair, and looks really odd when relocated to a chap's noggin. Unless you are a Wookie or Robin Williams that kind of follicle will never be thick enough to thrive on the human scalp. Wayne Rooney's cost him in excess of £30,000 and looked utterly terrible - like the hairline of a 1970s Eagle-Eye Action Man that had been left in the sun. It looks a little better now, admittedly, but these kinds of transplants are notoriously short-lived.

thanking you muchly ^_^ The brown one on the left is real human hair (being the one that I wear most of the time methought 'twas worth investing in such) but the other three are kanekalon (and even all together come to only a fraction of the cost of their counterpart) which were bought originally for fancy dress purposes ^_^

Aside from the glorious pink I sport in every form profile, I would never consider wearing a wig (despite the fact that I am losing my hair). Aside from the fact that I prefer the look of me with little hair (have had long flowing locks in the past, looked terrible, no idea why I did it) it would be suddenly very obvious to everyone else that I had magically grown hair - the comments from students would be endless, it's just not worth it, lol

China Hair really is staggeringly expensive. I had a long white wig which had been used in (of all things) 'Tank Girl', which was valued at about £500. I was given it as part of a settlement from a theatre manager who tried to stiff me on a contract. The equivalent Yak at that point - this was late '90s - would have probably been just under £100.

Last October I had about a foot and a half cut off my hair (it was still below the shoulder), and a few days later someone asked me if I'd donated it to make wigs for chemo patients losing their hair. To that point I hadn't even known you could do such a thing, and I felt absolutely terrible.

I really like wigs for dressing up; often my choice of fancy dress costume or cosplay is decided by "Can I wear a wig/something on my head?". I have a long curly auburn one, a shoulder length wavy strawberry blonde one, two slightly different short black ones (Servalan and Vulcan), a bright pink bob and a bald cap (Centauri female). I also have a bone (fnarr) for my Delenn costume, and I made a set of lekku for a Twi'lek costume a couple of years ago.

It's amazing how different one looks with a different colour/style, I think it can influence how you feel and behave too.

I've always been fascinated by wigs, the really good ones, even tough you can usually spot them, still look well, real. A family friend who has chemo for breast cncer was wearing a wig, and i didn't know until she took it off after I commented on how her new hairstyle suited her ( I hadn't seen her for a few years).

the cheap ones that look like decayed roadkill on the pther hand are worrying and it does make you wonder at the mentality of the person wearing it. are they too vane to remove it and go natural, or are they just so used to wearing the offensive creature that they are impervious to it?

Have to admit i would love to get a few wigs as I'd love to be a red head occasionally but being a natural blonde I am unwilling to dye my hair, even the wash in/out stuff. But how the hell do you learn all about the nets etc you need to wear to keep your own hair under control?! How did people learnt his stuff before the invent of the internet?

And HH, definitie Mr collins from the BBC's P&P going on there!

No need to feel terrible - as most peoples' hair really isn't suitable for wig-making. It has to be really strong. The reason why China Hair and hair from the Indian sub-continent is so prized is that it's fine, but strong enough to withstand styling and processing. It's also untainted by the effects of chemicals and cosmetics - most shampoos and (worse) conditioners do lasting damage to follicles.

I've made many beards and mustaches from both China Hair and European hair - looping and tying thousands of individiual hairs through the fabric weave which will be used to glue the final piece to the face - and I always found the 'domestic product' less durable, more brittle, and more likely to snag or snap. I know many wigmakers who actually prefer Yak to European hair.
