Jake Lloyd speaks about how The Phantom Menace ended his acting career.

OK, so his performance wasn't great to say the least but I do feel bad for him having to grow up with the amount of stick he must have gotten ever since.

I remember watching Lucas decide which of three kids would play young Anakin on the extras and thinking at the time he'd picked the worst one...that being said it does sound like a miserable existence for him growing up and like you say it really was a poisoned chalice. What really gets me is the part where it says he destroyed all his Star Wars memorabilia. It's so sad that he'll probably never be able to enjoy anything Star Wars related because of all the bad associations.

Poor kid. Wasn't really his fault. A friend of mine met him at a convention at Milton Keynes years ago and said he was a very charming young man.

Kudos, I've just watched the 2nd season episodes with the Mandalorians. This retcon involving them was what you were annoyed with right?

Yup. Changing the climate and terrain of Mandalore, (and if I remember correctly changing the name of Concord Dawn to Concordia) making them pacifists. Making them a high tech society. Making them none nomadic. Making Deathwatch just another gang of guns for hire. Not to mention changing so much that Karen Traviss' books no longer had a place in the SW universe.

Basically taking everything that made them interesting in the EU and flushing it down the toilet so they now resemble all the other boring alien societies in the SW universe...

Oooh, I guess that's all still a bit raw with me then...

If I remember correctly one of the other kids was brilliant and they didn't pick him.

Any idea who that kid grew up to be? I know Lloyd had already acted in stuff, but presumably they were going for a relative unknown.

Yeah that's right, me and Tech had a bit of a rant about it as he was clearly so much better than poor Jake Lloyd. Probably just as well for whoever it was though. He may not have got an acting career out of it but he probably had a far more enjoyable childhood.

I'm not sure it matters who played Anakin, George's wooden script, wooden directing and the wrath of outraged fans would have killed their careers stone dead anyhow.
