Saw it this afternoon and I have to say I enjoyed it. I thought Jennifer Lawrence was ace as Katniss and the rest of the cast. I liked the look of the Capital and the brief glimpses of District 12 and I liked how the music and sound faded in and out of the film.

Did have some minor quibbles about it though, I'm not a fan of shakycam and I didn't like how it was used too often during the confrontations during the Games. I can understand wanting to make the fighting look close and personal but all the blurring it led to made it hard to see who was hitting who. And I wasn't particularly keen on the fashions in the Capital, it looked too over the top. Again, I can understand wanting to show how different the Capital is from the Districts, but it looked like they'd dressed bizarre and OTT for the sake of it rather than demonstrating the difference in cultures. Are rich people in Panem so bored they have to look like M&Ms?

Gary Ross won't be directing Catching Fire.

Watched this, and I am confused about something.

Why are the Districs being oppressed and forced to dig for coal etc, when the technology seems to exist to create matter out of thin air, or solid holograms etc. Does the book explain in more detail how the economy is meant to work?
