I watched this when it was aired the other night. I believe my tweet at the time was akin to "wow, she's a patronising trout."
Lovely to see the weekender on t'tellybox, but did we really need ten minutes of "ooh, look how weird everyone is, dressing up!" FFS. I guessed we were in for a car crash when her opening gambit when meeting the GKs was "eek, power rangers!" Ye gods, my gran knows who Stormtroopers are, and she's been dead twenty years. "Alien frog people"? How hard would it have been to ask someone who they were? Lazy. And a Princess Leia / Danish pastry gag? Pass the a needle and thread, I think my sides have split. "Not her fault" - she could have asked questions, tried to find out, rather than standing there like going "look at me, I'm completely out of my depth, aren't I brave!" I could go on. The whole thing was condescending and offensive, ignorance shouldn't be worn as a badge of honour. Unimpressed. Last edited by Cougar; 19-04-2012 at 07:57 PM. |

Guys, one of the two Galactic Knights that were acting as her escort for the day has requested that I pass on some information to you all.
James and Graham (The whte and black Stormtroopers) were both filmed explaining about the main arena, the Void and the guests attending SFX Weekender, in addition to who the Galactic Knights are and what we do. Given the similarity with names and the mistake that a number of SFX Forum members made, can you REALLY blame Connie from using the Connie Fisher - Carrie Fisher line? Particularly when dressing as Leia? If you think the Danish Pastry gag is an old one you ought to here some of the jokes we hear almost every troop! lol! I've also had a number of other Knights tell me that she asked them a variety of different questions - something that I can attest to during my interview with her - one (minor problem arose from the fact we rarely step out of character - as you saw with the Dalek and the Doctor - (infact the Spiderman - also a Galactic Knight - is the most out of character any of us got), this means that questions are likely to hit a wall and people can become stumped when they think we aren't answering their questions seriously enough. What you see/saw on screen is down to the editors of the show and not the camera crew or Connie. Given that they clearly had only a short time to show the event in the segment, they opted to edit it down to what we saw. As stated perviously, it could've ended better but, I don't think that the SFX Weekender came over badly. Nor was I concerned about how the Galactic Knights came across - if you think the Power Rangers joke is bad you've not heard anything!

As far as I'm concerned, the Galactic Knights are NOT cosplayers, they are battle re-enactors like the Sealed Knot or the Vike.
The only difference is that they re-enact battles that were never fought on Earth. |

It's out in the wild wild web now. I couldn't take it back if I tried.
![]() (In other words, feel free!) For ultimate legitimacy, including having the Police not want to confiscate blasters etc, you may want to consider applying for membership here:- The National Association of Re-enactment Societies. Their membership seems to include American Civil War societies, so I don't see why they won't take you. For our overseas readers, here are the organisations I'm comparing the GK to:- The Vikings The Sealed Knot Last edited by Grumpy old git; 25-04-2012 at 05:34 PM. Reason: Links to Sealed Knot & Vike added for comparison. |
