I know this probably isn't the right place, but has anyone else had problems with the TNG blu ray sampler. I've put mine in the PS3, and it just whirrs round and nothing happens

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly, you need to make sure whether it's the disc or the PS3 that has the problem. So try another BD in your PlayStation.
Then do you have another, or know where you get access to a blu-ray player? If so, try the disc in it.
If it's the console at fault, you might have to call Customer Support. Look in the PS3's manual or any game instruction manual.
If it's the disc, then you would probably have to consider exchanging, or getting a refund for the disc. Hope you kept the receipt!

Thanks for the advice - threatened the disc with being returned and it miraculously decided to work. Next Generation has never looked so good.

Considering that 2K (1080p full HD, ie. Blu Ray) didn't exactly set the world on fire, I have serious doubts about a 4K revolution happening anytime soon. They can barely re-master stuff in 2K as it is to an acceptable standard, and back catalogs are hugely important, ask Disney how much gold there is to be mined in re-releasing their back catalog in 3D for example. It's the future sure, but a distant future.

Anyways, STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION!!!

The picture and sound quality are excellent, more impressive than I expected. Sure there's grain in some darker scenes, and some focal issues. Not to mention the missing footage (it is blink and you miss it brief though, and only from one episode). The big issue for me though was the aspect ration, 4:3?? I wasn't prepared for that. Ok, so yeah, I know that's how it was originally screened and formatted, but isn't Friends HD widescreen? You can zoom, or alter the aspect ratio, but you can never escape the 4:3. And yeah, that kinda bugged me.

The actual episodes were great, even Farpoint had a quaint nostalgia to it in-between the painful over acting and Deanna crying every five minutes. Watching Farpoint, you got a real sense of this being where modern Star Trek began, DS9, Voyager, the movies, hell, even Enterprise came from this humble beginning.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the TNG Sampler disk, I'm even more surprised that I'm now actually considering buying the full series as I'm pretty sure TNG was derided by Star Trek fans when it was first screened, understandable considering that the first couple of season weren't all that.

Anyways, enough pointless rambling that no one will ever read, lol, Star Trek TNG Sampler, go buy it, you might just be in for an unexpectedly pleasant surprise.

It's to do with Age, later episodes of Friends were filmed with a view to it going widescreen and so the Director kept the 16:9 area in the print and were cropped to 4:3 for TV transmission. Some of the earlier episodes were filmed with 4:3 in mind and so to produce the Widescreen image they've cut some off of the top and bottom of the picture

Part of me was hoping there was a widescreen version of TNG in the Paramount/CBS vaults somewhere and that they only cropped it to 4:3 for the TV broadcasts.

Hmm, not sure about the idea of a studio cropping a print that was already framed for broadcast. I guess it's better than people at home simply using the zoom function since it would be intelligently framed, rather than just a zoomed in picture. But still, just the idea of losing picture data and not having a choice about it. Anyways, what I did was change the aspect ratio and then offset the vertical so the distortion wasn't as noticeable. Lost around 10% of the picture data (top and bottom), but it was a worthwhile compromise, it was like being on the bridge of the enterprise!
