Series 7 Confirmed
It's been confirmed on twitter that there will be 14 new episodes of Doctor Who with Matt Smith as the Doctor.

I was really happy, and then that comment about not knowing how many episodes will air in 2012 really started to worry me.
What if we've been budget cutted to half length seasons. That this is a 2 season renewal: Christmas 2011, a 6 episode season next year and Christmas 2012, and then a 6 episode season in 2013.

That's been the case for most of the last few years
Not too worried they may possibly be thinking about a winter run - but will see how this new times or works first before deciding anything

Good news, although there is a certain element of foregone conclusion-ness given that Moff. has said he's already planning for the 50th anniversary.
Although will Mr Smith hang around that long?

I'd be surprised if the new companion is anyone other than River Song.
Of course she doesn't necessarily have to be played by Alex Kingston though.

Series 7/8/Muriel Confirmed For 2012

The Moff having "a plan" for said season: Not so Yay. TBH after this year I'd welcome a return to Classic Who style seasons, i.e. self contained stories with no arc, with maybe a two part finale, or even a cliffhanger leading into the Christmas special (feasible, if the season's split like this year).
