Overseas

A very subdued weekend, "The Dark Knight Rises" takes the top spout with $20.6M, apparently the lowest weekend take to secure the #1 spot in the 2012. This pushes the pictures Overseas Cume to $487.8M where it's (surprisingly) still the 3rd biggest movie of the year in Overseas's sales, trailing "Ice Age 4" by $150M.

Still "TDKR"'s release schedule is not over, though an opening in Greece may not set the charts alight, the pic bows in China on Aug 27th.

The Overseas take now means the film ranks at #34 in the list of all-time overseas sales, trailing the $500M of "Kung Fu Panda 2" and has exceeded the $486M Offshore take of "The Dark Knight" which ranks it at #39

Worldwide however the pic has taken $897M ranking it as the year's 2nd biggest picture and now ranks as the 28th biggest picture of all-time currently trailing the $914M of "Jurassic Park.

"Total Recall" takes the #2 spot with $19M taken this weekend fro 53 markets. Openings in S. Korea, France and Brazil provided the biggest markets with Korea producing $5.2M, France $3.5M and Brazil $2.2M. The picture has now produced $ 58.2M and Worldwide it stands at $110M.

"The Bourne Legacy" widened by a further 5 markets this weekend thus coming in 3rd place with $18.2M from 18 markets. The UK provided the biggest weekend with a bow of $7.4M, Australia weekended with $4.9M while Spain produced $2.5M. Worldwide the film has now made $97.7M

"The Avengers" finally arrived in Japan, producing the majority of this weekend's $18M take. Offshore Cume for the pic now stands at $863,9M and Worldwide it stands at $1,481.5M trailing the $2,185M of "Titanic" and the $2,782M of "Avatar" as the biggest movies of all-time.

"Brave" took $14.4M this weekend from 46 markets, this brings the pictures offshore cume to $179.2M whilst Worldwide it becomes the 11th (consecutive) Pixar picture to pass the $400M mark. The film's Global Cume now stands at $408.3M ranking it as the year's 8th biggest picture.

In the Pixar cannon, the film ranks their 11th biggest picture, trailing the $462M of "Cars".

"The Expendables 2" has a number of Worldwide distributors, notably LGF in US and UK and Universal across much of Europe. The pic opened in Russia to $7.9M, the UK provided $2.8M whilst Italy weekended with $2M. Some Far Eastern Distributors have yet to report but at the moment the film took $12.7M

"Ted" took $11.8M from 26 markets (still has 32 remaining) the UK provided $3.1M (the market cume now stands at $34M), Greece are having a bumper weekend as the pic opens there this week too. The film has so-far cumed $134.8M Offshore ranking it as the 18th biggest picture. Worldwide the film has cumed $347.9M ranking it as the year's 10th biggest picture.

"Ice Age 4" this weekend took $10M from 58 markets, this brings its Overseas Cume to $647.3M, making it the 2nd biggest film of the year Offshore. Worldwide its poor US performance sees its Global take at $797M making it the 3rd biggest picture of the year. Only 3 pictures have so-far exceeded the $700M mark this year though "Spiderman" looks as if it may crawl across the mark shortly as its Global take currently stands at $692M

"Step up Revolution" goes into profitability this weekend thanks to a $9.2M take from 33 markets. This brings the films Offshore Cume to $46.3M and Worldwide to $79.2M. Of the franchise, the film is still looking decidedly weak, ranking as the lowest grossing of the four. "Step Up" took a Global $114M, "2" $150M while the 3rd pic grossed $159M ($116M of it Offshore).

Finally "Madagascar 3" took $5.7M from 42 markets this brings its Offshore take to $352.3M (6th biggest of the year) Worldwide it has grossed $565M thus making it the year's 7th biggest picture. It's still not finished its roll-out yet this week will see an Italian bow and Germany and UK have to wait until October.

Currently it ranks as the franchises 2nd biggest global pic, trailing "Madagascar 2"'s $603M which incidentally it also trails in Dreamworks Animation's list of Global takes, The 2nd pic ranks as the 6th biggest picture and thus the 3rd pic ranks as the 7th. In 5th place is the $631M Worldwide take of "Kung Fu Panda"

Predicted Weekend

As the Summer season winds down, the main governance of this weekends charts will how much each picture declines which makes the prediction a bit of a bugger as every prognosticator seems to be predicting different declines for every film. Thus these predictions are largely based upon an average of everyone

Most seems to be saying the "The Expendables 2" will decline somewhere in the low 50's that should give it a weekend of around $12M and thus should give it the top spot this weekend.

Joseph Gordon Levitt gets an interesting test this weekend, so-far he's usually played in the supporting role ("TDKR", "Inception", "GI Joe") but when he's been brought up front ("50/50") his films have failed to interest the public. "50/50" Opened at $8.6M it seems likely that "Premium Rush" will do about the same business.

Another of the weekend's few wide openings is "Hit and Run", as with "Hope Springs" & "Timothy Green" it's opened Wednesday in a bid to get a bit of extra publicity. The picture is opening across 2,870 theatres and stars Kristen Bell and Bradley Cooper. Neither name is likely to cause the public come flocking in. The pic is expected to take about $3M over Wednesday and Thursday and pick up a further $6m-$7M over the weekend.

Opening in 1,000 theatres "2016:Obama's America" is hitting the same circuit that the Christian-themed pics hit and using the same promotional mechanisms. Consequently it could well appear in the lower reaches of the charts. Of the weeks new releases it's the only one to appear in Fandango's top 5 selling pics (34%) which is due to block booking of seats.

Code:
1. “The Expendables 2” Predicted W’kend $12.0M
2. “The Bourne Legacy” $9.0M
3. “Premium Rush” $8.5M
4. “ParaNorman” $8.0M
5. “The Campaign” $7.5M
6. “The Dark Knight Rises” $7.0M
7. “Hit and Run” $6.8M
8. “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” $6.5M
9. “Hope Springs” $6.3M
10. “2016: Obama’s America” $6.0M

US Weekend

As expected this weekend was pretty quiet, with "Expendables 2" topping the charts with $13.5M. That ranks the picture as the worst take for a picture achieving #1 in 2012, formerly held by "Think Like a Man" which took the #1 spit on Apr 27-29 with $17M and before that "The Grey" which took $19M on Jan 27-29th.

The weekend take puts the "Expendables 2" at a gross of $52.3M in 10 days.

"Bourne Legacy" comes in 2nd spot with $9.3M pushing its Cume to $85.5M.

"ParaNorman" comes in 3rd with a take of $8.5M, marking a very benign drop of just 39.5% from its debut. The pic now has taken $28.8M

"The Campaign" starts its 3rd week with a ta ke of $7.4M thus increasing its Cume to $64.5M and thus happily over the budget mark and ranks as his 9th biggest US pic, trailing the $75M of 2003's "Old School". For Galifianakis, no-change the ranks as his 8th biggest pic (#9 is the $15M of "Youth in Revolt") and still chasing the $73M of "Dinner for Schmucks".

With a decline of just 35% "The Dark Knight Rises" is slipping gently out of the 10, this weekend taking $7.1M which now gives it a Cume of $422M. The film still ranks as the 11th biggest pic at the all-time US Box Office, but is now just $600K behind "The Lion King" so should slip it 10th sometime tomorrow. In which case it will be chasing the $423M of "POTC: Dead Man's Chest" which just $1.2M ahead. Thus be next weekend "TDKR" should find itself in 9th place chasing the $435M of "E.T"

"The Odd Life of Timothy Green" also achieved its budget milestone this weekend thanks to a $7.1M take which marks just a 34% reduction in Box Office from last weekend. For Jennifer Garnet the pic ranks as her 10th biggest US pic, still down amongst the morass of $33M for 2011's Arthur and the $24M from "Elektra".

Finally we get the to a new pic, "Premium Rush" stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and with a take of $6.3M ranks as his 11th biggest bow, unfortunately it appears to have not opened as well as "50/50" which last year bowed at $8.4M and the pic was expected to equal or slightly beat that.

Audience breakdown was 55% Male to 45% Female and 67% of the audience were aged 25 or older. Exit scoring is ranking the pic as a low "B".

Anti-Obama pic "2016 Obama's America" surprised everyone by at one point being the biggest pic of Friday though this was a a problem of the empty States reporting early and once the West Coast figures came in it sank to 4th place with a Friday take of $2.2M.

Rocky Mountain Pictures have released no demographic data. The pic currently ranks as the Distributor's 2nd biggest pic, and with the picture widening next weekend should soon beat the $11M of "End of the Spear" shortly.

"Hope Springs" took $6M this weekend bringing its Cume to $45M

Final new release this weekend "Hit and Run" took $4.7M and with a budget of just $2M has already paid for itself. The pic stars Kristen Bell and Bradley Cooper. No Demographic data was available though exit scores ranks the pic as a "C-".

Overall the top 12 grossed $83M, that's the lowest grossing top 12 of the year and actually the lowest since December 9th ($67M) of last year. Though this is nothing unusual, the same weekend last year the top 12 were worth $74M, the lowest grossing weekend of the 2011, though the weekend of Sept 9/11 was worth just $62M, the worst weekend of the year.

Code:
                                                 Th’tres Average Cume Budget

Overseas Weekend

One reason to hate when the film ends up being distributed by about 30 local distributors some take an age to reveal their weekend take, such is the case of "Expendables 2" with some not reporting this weekend's take for a few more weeks. Fortunately they tend to be the smaller markets and though the Weekend take will eventually be higher, it won't be that much from the estimate.

"Expendables 2" took about $18M this weekend, with France leading the way with a $5M bow, Italy wasn't far behind with a bow of $4.4M. In Russia, the 2nd weekend brought in a further $4.1M. The 10-day cume for Russia now stands at $14.1M and has thus already beaten the $13M total cume for the first pic.

"The Dark Knight Rises" took $15.3M this weekend. In the UK the local cume stands at $82.1M making it the year's biggest film (bigger than even "The Avengers" which raised $80.5M in the UK). The film's Offshore Gross now stands at $519M which amazingly still only qualifies it for 3rd place.

Worldwide it has grossed $941.2M placing it as the year's 2nd biggest film and is the 17th biggest pic of all-time, still trailing "The Lion King"'s $951M.

In 3rd sot comes "Brave" taking $14.6M this weekend, the UK being the biggest contributor where the film weekended with $4.1M and took the markets #1 spot. The Pixar pic has now earned $212.3M Offshore making it the 14th biggest picture of the year in the Overseas Chart, chasing the $215M of "Prometheus".

Worldwide it has grossed $442.4M ranking it as the year's 8th biggest picture, and in the Pixar franchise it still ranks as their 11th biggest picture, now needing $20M to overtake "Cars".

"Total Recall" comes in at #5 with $13.8M from 57 markets, Italy was the pictures big earner this weekend with $7.7M (though that was drawn from 5 days). Worldwide the pic has now taken $134.8M

"Madagascar 3" bowed in Italy this weekend ti $7.7M (though over 5 days) this helped the pic take $11.7M over the weekend which gives it the 6th spot this week. The film has now grossed $369M Offshore making it the 6th biggest Overseas Pic (trialing "Spider Man"'s Offshore take of $439M). Worldwide its gross of $582M makes it the 7th biggest picture of the year chasing "MIB3"'s Global take of $621M.

It now ranks as Dreamworks Animation's 7th biggest picture with #6 belonging to "Madagascar 2" at $603M and the 3rd pic still has major openings in Europe in its pocket.

"Prometheus" this weekend took $11.67M from just 7 markets, this pushes its Offshore Cume to $215.5M, making it the 13th biggest film of the year in the Overseas Chart, trailing "Wrath of the Titans" by just $4M. Worldwide it has grossed $342M, making it the year's 12th biggest picture trailing "Titanic 3D"'s gross by just $2M.

"Ted" took $9.5M this weekend from 31 markets (27 still remaining) this gives it an Offshore Cume of $155M (18th biggest) and a Worldwide $353M which ranks it as the year's 10th biggest. It needs another $40M to pass "Snow White & the Huntsman".

For Wahlberg the pic now ranks as his 2nd biggest pic of all-time, just $9M behind the Worldwide Gross of "Planet of the Apes" and yet people question why on earth he attached his name to project. For Kunis the pic has out grossed the $329M of "Black Swan" to become her biggest picture.

"The Bourne Legacy" widened by 6 further markets this week and is now playing 24 markets. In so doing it earned $9.4M giving it a Worldwide Cume of $129M.

Fox this week announced it had passed the $2B mark in Overseas Sales, the first studio to do so this year. Thanks partly to "Ice Age 4" whose $7.6M this weekend brings its Offshore Gross to $665.1M (2nd biggest Offshore Pic) and Worldwide to $818M making it the 3rd biggest picture of the year and now ranks as the 43th biggest film of all-time (just $2M behind "Independence Day").

However the film is still trailing "Ice Age 3" which earned $886M in 2009.

Finally at #10 comes Kim Whee's "The Neighbours" opening to $7.5M in S. Korea. Based upo a Kang Pool Web Comic, the film tells of a teenage girl who goes missing from a middle-class apartment complex

China

In China the government chooses which Foreign films they will allow to be shown and when they will get released. This week "Amazing Spider Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises" debuted and it looks as if "Spider Man" emerged the winner taking $5.5M on its first day to "The Dark Knight"'s $4.5M

Lawless opened Wednesday and is believed to have made about $ 1.1 million on it's first day, the Weinsteins are hoping that the film will make $13 million by monday. you know someone eventually is going to cop on that claiming five days as a weekend really isn't that.

hmmm and politics raise it's ugly head Deadline is reporting 2016 is gaining ground in the battleground states while individual markets such as los Angeles , San Francisco and New York city it's performing poorly , although oddly rentrak is reporting the film is doing well in new york state and the film has just become the 6th biggest grossing Documentary in box office records.

Predicted Weekend

Looks like another subdued weekend, with no-one particularly standing-out. WB dumped "Apparation" last week and thus the market is open for a Friday Date Night Horror pic and thus there's a consensus that "The Possession" will take the top spot but no-one seems particularly confident about that.

As JohnOne notes "Lawless" opened on Wednesday to $1.1M, Wednesday openings seem to be coming an option for pics that are looking to get some build-up for the Weekend. But it doesn't always work, also opening on Wednesday was "Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure", bowing in 2,140 theatres the picture cost $20M but took just $102K, which works out as a theatre average of just $40.

Currently the Worst Opening Weekend belongs to a 2008 Pic "Proud American" which bowed in just 750 theatres and took $96K which works out as an average of $120. Though it's not in the 10, "Oogie" is expected to do about $3M this weekend.

"2016 Obama's America" will be expanding to 1,700 locations this weekend. It's already doing well though, having taken $12M, this weekend it's expected to almost double that.

Surprisingly, also not in the 10 is "The Avengers". Disney are widening the film to give fans one last time to see the pic on the big screen. But with the DVD/Bluray about to street in a few weeks it looks as if the pic is only expected to pic up about $2M-$3M

Code:
1. “The Possession” Predicted Weekend $13.0M
2. “Lawless” $12.0M
3. “2016 Obama’s America” $11.0M
4. “The Expendables 2” $10.0M
5. “The Bourne Legacy” $9.5M
6. “The Dark Knight Rises” $9.0M
7. “ParaNorman” $8.5M

ah dave soon it will be time to change the title of this thread once again....enjoy labor day (lwho spell labour without the u?)

according to Deadline possession has opened at 1 while Lawless has come in at 2 for Friday night.....Expendables will be 3 while Obamas America is coming in at 5 however I don't trust Deadline on this one yet, they tend to allow politics to leak into their stories....the entire Aurora debacle and it's aftermath being an example.

Still this must be seen as a dissapointment for the Weinsteins if lawless comes in at 2nd place when it had three extra days in it's "weekend"

US Weekend

"The Posession" takes the #1 spot this weekend with a $17.7M bow, better than the mid-weeks expected but still ranks as the 67th biggest opening of the year and the 2nd lowest weekend to score a #1 this year (the lowest being "The Expendables 2" last weekend where just $13M secured the top spot.

The pic should also win the 4-day as its estimated to pick up a further $5M on Monday to bring its Cume to $21M. It should enjoy the time as with a "C+" exit rating hopes for it spending a lengthy time in the charts look slim.

The pic ranks as the 25th best opening for a Supernatural Movie, slotting between the $18M bow of "Final Destination 5" and the $17.5M of "Legion".

Opening last Wednesday seems to have robbed "Lawless" of some Weekend Activity with the pic taking $9.8M this weekend. However it should run well as the pic received a solid "A" from exit polling.

"The Expendables 2" dropped to 3rd place this weekend with a take of $8.8M a 34% drop from last weekend, In the 3 weekends the pic has earned $66.2M, the 1st pic had earned $82M, so the film is quite some way behind.

"The Bourne Legacy" took $7.2M this weekend, a very mild 22% drop. After 3 weekends, the picture has now cumed $96"M. After the same amount of time, the 2002 pic had picked up $72M, the second pic had earned $124M while the 3rd had taken $164M.

"ParaNorman" took $6.5M this weekend bringing its Cume to $38M.

"Timothy Green" took $6M a mere 15% drop bringing its Cume to $35M, the film might have opened quietly at $10M but it's now exceeded the 3xOpening rule.

For Jennifer Garner, the film has edged pass the $33M of "Arthur (2011)" to become her 9th biggest picture. It needs to be looking at $45M to push pass "Dude Where's My Car"

"The Dark Knight Rises" this weekend took $5.9M which brings its US Cume to $431.2M, the film now ranks as the 9th biggest film of all-time in the US, now trailing "ET" by just $4M.

"The Campaign" took $5,4M bringing its Cume to $73M, for Ferrell the picture still ranks as his 9th biggest pic but is just $2M behind "Old School". For Galifianakis the pic ranks as his 7th biggest having overtaken "Dinner for Schmucks" by $100K and is trailing the $80M of "What Happens in Vegas".

"2016 Obama's America" didn't as do as well as expected taking $5.1M a 21% drop despite expanding by 600 further theatres. The pic has now grossed $18.2M

"Hope Springs" took $4.7M, a drop of 17%, it's now Cumed $52M.

Last week's new releases "Premium Rush" and "Hit and Run" didn't even make the 10 this weekend, coming in at #11 and #12 with $3.9M and $2.6M respectively.

"Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure" took just $448K a box office average of just $201 this ranks it as the worst opening of all-time for a Wide opening (2,000+ theatres)

This weekend the top 12 grossed a total of $83.7M, $1M better than last weekend and thus the 2nd lowest grossing weekend of the year
