Predicted Weekend
There's little chance that "The Avengers" won't top the charts this weekend, even if it had a gigantic 70% plummet it would still fetch around $70-$80M and with excellent exit scores that's not going to happen a drop of around 45% is expected which will give it a weekend of around $110M which will also post the best 2nd weekend score, currently held by "Avatar" with a 2nd weekend of $75M. So the big question this weekend is how much will Johnny Depp's "Dark Shadows" take, It's sometimes difficult to recall a time pre-"POTC" that Depp was largely regarded as Box Office Poison, though "The Tourist"'s $16M debut & "Rum Diary"'s $5.1M bow still hint that he's not quite a reliable Opener that his "A+++" name suggests "Dark Shadows" sees Depp team up with Tim Burton once again and their last collaboration "Alice in Wonderland" bowed at $116M before going on to take a Global $1.02B. Based on a largely forgotten TV show "Dark Shadows" is generating little pre Box Office activity with Fandango reporting that yesterday the pic was accounting for just 7% of ticket sales (though the behemoth of "Avengers" is selling 84% of the tickets and distorting the reports) and currently a $30M weekend is expected. "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" comes into its 2nd weekend, last week it bowed to $737K in 27 theatres (an average of $27.3K) this weekend it widens and will start to play an active counter-programming alternative to the Summer's block busters. Expect it to take about $2M this weekend. Code:
1. "The Avengers" Predicted Weekend $110.0M 2. "Dark Shadows" $30.0M 3. "Think Like a Man" $6.0M 4. "The Hunger Games" $5.0M 5. "The Lucky One" $4.0M 6. "The Five Year Engagement" $3.5M 7. "Pirates!Band of Misfits" $3.2M 8. "Exotic Marigold Hotel" $2.0M 9. "The Raven" $1.5M 20. "Chimpanzee" $2.2M |

US Weekend
(if this post suddenly ends I'm in the departure lounge for a flight to Dallas I'll continue later this evening)Taking $103.2M this weekend, sees "The Avengers" fall by 50%, a bit heavier than many were expecting (low to mid 40's) but it still smashed the record for 2nd weekend takings which had been previous held by "Avatar" which had taken $75.6M in its 2nd weekend. This also sees the films US Cume to now stand at $373.2M, still not quite enough to surpass "Hunger Games" Domestic take of $386.9M but it now makes it the 18th biggest picture of all-time at the US Box Office and is now just $400K behind "Spider Man 2"'s 2004 Gross of $373.6M and another $4M will see it overtaking "LOTR:Return of the King" "Avengers" managed to pass the $350M spot in just 10 days, that spot was formerly held by "Dark Knight" which had grossed $350M in 14 days. Last weekend, "Avengers" was Marvel's 4th biggest picture in the US, trailing behind all 3 Spider-Man pics, this weekend it has now overtaken the $336M of "Spider Man 3", as we said above it will shortly overtake "Spider Man 2" leaving just the original "Spider Man" pic with a gross of $403M back in 2002. Johnny Depp/Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" comes in with $28.8M pretty much as expected but suggesting that it will have trouble making its price tag of $150M before it closes. It seems that outside of "POTC", all of Depp's biggest earners have come from his collaboration with Burton, apart from Rango, the rest of Depp's top 10 are filled by products of the partnership. The biggest pic of this venture being "Alice in Wonderland" with a bow of $116M, followed by the $56M of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", followed by "Sleepy Hollow"'s $30M bow then comes "Dark Shadows". For Burton this pic ranks as his 7th biggest Opener but represents the edge of the shelf as in 8th spot comes the $9M bow of "Mars Attacks" Exit polling show the audience to be rather Mature with 73% aged 25 or older, it seems that Depp still appeals to the ladies as 57% of the audience were Female. Generally the pic was graded as a "B". "Think like a Man" drops just 22% this weekend taking $6.3M, this brings its gross to $81.9M "Hunger Games" celebrates its 8th weekend by taking $4.4M this brings its gross to $386M which just keeps it in the lead as this year's biggest US pic. The film now ranks as the year's 13th biggest picture. About a month ago I predicted the film would close around $380M it now seems as if it will certainly pass the $390M barrier but it'll be interesting to see if it can take the 12th place where currently stands the $402M of "Transformers Revenge of the Fallen" "The Lucky One" takes $4.1M this weekend bringing its Cume to $53.7M, it currently ranks as the 4th biggest pic in the franchise of Nicholas Sparks adaptations, this weekend saw the picture overtake the $52.9M of "Message in a Bottle" and it now needs another $9M to catch up with "The Last Song" "Pirates! Band of Misfits" took $3.2M bringing its Cume to $23.1M, "Five Year Engagement"'s $3.1M pushes its cume to $24.4M. "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" widened by 151 theatres this weekend swelling its take to $2.6M bringing its US Cume to $3.7M "Chimpanzee" hangs on into the 10, taking $1.6M this weekend this now gives it a gross of $25.6M, this makes it "Disneynature"'s 2nd biggest pic, with "Earth (2009)" still holding the top spot with $32M. In terms of Nature documentaries, both pics drop one place as the biggest Nature pic is the $76M "March of the Penguins". Code:
W’kend Th’tres Average Gross Budget 1. “The Avengers” $103.2M -50% 4,349 $23,721 $373.2M $220M 2. “Dark Shadows” $28.8M 3,755 $7,671 $28.8M $150M 3. “Think like a Man” $6.3M -22% 2,052 $3,070 $81.9M $12M 4. “The Hunger Games” $4.4M -21% 2,531 $1,738 $386.9M $78M 5. “The Lucky One” $4.1M -24% 2,839 $1,428 $53.7M $25M 6. “Pirates! Avengers ...Nuff Said
Think Like a man is going to be one of the big hits of the year when you look at the profit to cost ratio. The Lucky one will break even and make a small profit Best Exotic...how much did it cost to make because it's still holding on in the UK top ten and it was released in February. Pirates : Unfortunately this looks like it's not going to break even. Chimpanze glad it's made money as part of the first week gross went to the Jane Goodall foundation Dark Shadows....oh dear , almost every review has proclaimed this picture boring and this reasult and the critical backlash will raise the question what was the studio thinking producing this? |

I suspect than it's broken even, I could be wrong but It's a British film so it's budget would be in the low to mid budget range....anything under $30 million and the films in profit.

Overseas
Nb. I haven't seen a figure for the Offshore performance of "Hunger Games" yet, I guess now it's entering the latter days of its theatre life the urge to provide figures isn't so strong "Avengers" takes the #1 spot for the 3rd consecutive weekend, this week scooping up $95.4M from 54 markets. With no new openings this week, the picture declined by a gentle 39% and its Offshore Cume now stands at $628.9M, meaning that it now leads "Titanic 3D" (#2 in the year's Overseas Chart) by $346M. In the Overseas Chart, it now ranks as the 16th biggest picture of all time, just $4M behind "Half Blood Prince" and then it will be breathing down the neck of "POTC: Dead Man's Chest" which sits as the 14th biggest picture with $642.9M Worldwide, this weekend it joined the the $1B club, with a Worldwide gross $1,002.1M. Only 12 films have ever surpassed that magic $1,000M mark and the film currently ranks as the 11th biggest, with #10 being held by "Alice in Wonderland"'s with $1,024M. Many commentators have already made the mistake of saying that it'll be the first Superhero picture to break the top 10, forgetting that "The Dark Knight" has already been there and now sits in 12th spot because of subsequent pics clambering past. But having achieved the mark it has now become Marvel's biggest pic of all time, having taken the crown from "Spider Man 3" which had formerly sat atop with a Global Gross of $890.9M "Dark Shadows" bowed this weekend in 42 markets, to $36.7M, and thus takes the weekend's 2nd spot. Biggest earner of the weekend was Russia where the picture took $5.3M, France (always a big Depp fan) came next with $4.6M and the UK produced $4M. The Film has now taken a Global $65M with a Japanese bow due this weekend and Central and S. America due Mid June. "American Pie: Reunion" took $15.6M this weekend from 49 markets thus bringing its Offshore Cume to $144.5M, this makes it the 8th biggest pic in this year's Overseas Chart, though it's over $50M behind "John Carter" at #7 with $200.6M taken Offshore. It also means that in a single bound the picture has become the biggest of the Franchise Offshore having overtaken "American Pie 2" which formerly held the crown with $142M taken offshore. Things aren't so rosy Worldwide as its poor US performance means that it has "only" grossed $200.6M Worldwide (though with a $50M budget comfortable in profit) and thus still ranks at the franchises lowest performance, still $31M behind "American Wedding". Hopefully the bonus payments that many of the cast were on was tied to the Overseas performance and not to the US. The picture currently ranks as the year's 10th biggest picture, just $1M behind "Safe House" "Battleship" opens in the US this weekend and the Offshore take has taken a lot of heat off of the pic, this weekend it took $11.2M from the Overseas Market, bringing its Offshore Total to $215M. This was largely thanks to a series of Central and S. American débuts of which Mexico ($3.2M) was the largest. This makes it the 6th biggest Offshore film of the year and being just $1M behind "Wrath of the Titans" must already have taken the 5th spot and with "Journey 2: The Incredible Island" at $221M that too could fall. Without a US Opening its already ranks as the year's 8th biggest film. "21 Jump Street" just squeezes into 5th spot this weekend thanks to a $3.2M weekend from 31 markets, pushing the films offshore Cume to $49.1M, Worldwide it has now made $184.2M thus making it the year's 11th biggest picture. For Jonah Hill the film currently ranks as his 6th biggest movie, with #5 being "Knocked Up", that pic took a Global Gross of $219 and ranks as his highest non-animated pic. "Titanic 3D" takes 6th spot with $3.1Mfrom 39 markets, this pushes this 3D remake to $282.9M, which as we have said gives it 2nd spot in the year's biggest movies overseas. Worldwide it has grossed $340 which makes it the 3rd biggest movie of the year (with "Hunger Games" in 2nd spot with $623.9M). "The Lucky One" took $2.5M this weekend from 28 markets bringing its Offshore take to $22.8M and Worldwide it now stands at $76.5M. Of the Nicholas Sparks Franchise the movie still stands in 6th spot )of 7) closing in on the Global $84M that "Nights in Rodanthe" took in 2008. "Pirates!Band of Misfits" closes every so slowly towards the $110M that it needs to achieve the magic 2xbudget . This weekend it took $2.2M from 50 Markets bringing it Overseas Take to $74.5M, add the $23M from the US and we have a Worldwide $97.6M. "Le Prenom" rounds off the 9 with $2M taken from French speaking markets, the pic has now managed to raise $15.9M Code:
1. "The Avengers" $95.4M O'seas Cume $628.9M W'wide Cume $1,002.1M Budget $220M 2. "Dark Shadows" $36.7M $36.7M $65.5M $150M 3. "American Reunion" $15.6M $144.5M $205.6M $50M 4. "Battleship" $11.2M $215.3M $200M 5. "21 Jump Street" $3.2M $49.1M $184.2M $42M 6. "Titanic 3D" $3.1M $282.9M $340.5M $18M 7. "The Lucky One" $2.5M $22.8M $76.5M $25M 8. "Pirates!" $2.2M $74.5M $97.6M $55M 9. "Le Prenom" $2.0M $15.9M |

Predicted Weekend
An interesting weekend is in front of us, "Avengers" decline of 50% last weekend surprised many whom were expecting the decline to be low to mid 40's, thus a high-40's to 50's is predicted which should give it a weekend of $53M. Fandango report that the film sold 44% of their tickets on Wednesday Universal's "Battleship" débuts in the US this weekend, costing $200M, the pressure upon the studio has been alleviated a bit thanks to the Overseas Market which has currently provided $215M, plus Universal Announced they'd signed Cross Promotional Partnerships worth $50M but they'd still like the US release to close with around $150M which means they too will be looking for a $50M Weekend. As in the rest of the world US critics are mocking the pic but the film has proved remarkably critic proof and Fandango report that on Wednesday the picture accounted for 11% of their sales. Look for the film to take around $45M. Sasha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator" has already opened opening early in the hopes of getting some early water cooler chatter about the pic in the hope of circumventing some of the Friday Morning critics. The picture took $4.5M Wednesday and Fandango report that it sold 30% of Wednesday's tickets. However the big question is how will the 5-day opening affect the 3-day. "Bruno" bowed to $30M while "Borat" weekended with $26M. Currently the Weekend Prediction for the film is suggesting it will take about $20M Having a huge cast of A & B listers, many performing just one or two scenes seemed like a good idea when Valentine's Day bowed to $56M and went on to take $110M but then "New Year's Eve" stumbled taking just $56M but by then "What to Expect when you're Expecting" was already in the can and it was too late. Currently the pic is expected to open with $13M and accounted for 3% of Wednesday's ticket sales. Tim Burton's/Johnny Depp's "Dark Shadows" looks to have failed to excite the US audience and a hefty 55% drop is expected this weekend giving it a Box Office of around $11M Code:
1. "The Avengers" Predicted W'kend $53M 2. "Battleship" $47M 3. "The Dictator" $20M 4. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" $13M 5. "Dark Shadows" $11M 6. "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" $4M 7. "Think Like a Man" $3M 8. "Hunger Games" $3M 9. "The Lucky One" $2M 10. "Pirates!Band of Misfits" $2M |

Predicted Weekend
"Battleship" has got off to a poor start taking just $9M on Friday when it was expected to do at least $12M, meaning that Universal are now looking at a weekend of around $25M, about half of what they needed. Things don't look to rosy for future weeks as Friday Night audiences were rating it at "C+" "Avengers" Friday Night took $15M this was slightly better than expected and is now looking at a $56M Weekend. The film has now grossed $417M having passed the $400M mark in just 14 days which is the fastest pic to ever hit that mark outpacing "The Dark Knight" the former record holder having taken 18 days to achieve the mark. "The Dictators" Wednesday release is looking like a failure, Friday night it took $5.7M which looks as if it will take $15M over the weekend, combined with the $10M from Wednesday and Friday should give it a 5 day gross of around $25M "What to do When You're Expecting" took $3.85M on Friday and should weekend with $11M slightly behind "Dark Shadows" whose Friday take of $3.80M means that it too will be looking at a $11M-$12M Weekend |

US Weekend
"The Avengers" takes the #1 spot in its 3rd weekend, probably the last time as considering both weekend's it dropped by half which means next weekend the take will be $25M which should be beaten by "Men in Black 3"'s debut. The weekend take of $55M means that the film failed to break the record for 3rd best weekend take, that still belongs to "Avatar" with a 3rd weekend take of $68.5M. The picture pushed "Spider Man"'s 3rd weekend take of $45M into 3rd spot. The films gross now stands at $457M which means that only last Thursday the film passed the $400M setting a new record for passing that mark achieving it in 14 days to "The Dark Knight"'s 18 days. The film now breaks the record for passing the $450M mark, achieving the point in just 17 days. "The Dark Knight" took 27 days. The film has now grossed $457.1M now pushing it front of "The Hunger Games" to become the year's biggest film in the US and now ranks as the US Box Office's 6th biggest picture of all time, just $4M behind "Star War"'s US Gross of $461M by the end of next weekend should also have exceeded "Phantom Menace"'s $474M and ranks as the US's 4th biggest pic. In the US, the pic is now Marvel's biggest picture having overtaken the $403M gross of 2002's "Spiderman" and ranks as Disney's biggest US Pic having now overtaken "POTC: Dead Man's Chest" $423M Gross. The film doesn't yet rank as the biggest SuperHero pic as that still belongs to "The Dark Knight" and its $533M Gross. Rumor has it that when Comcast purchased Universal and discovered the studio had spent $209M on a board game adaptation they tried to pull the plug but upon discovering they'd committed so-much there was little they could do but release it and just sack everyone who was involved in its commissioning. The pressure on the film to make the $400M that it will need in-order to make a profit has been lessened by the Overseas Market bringing in $226M and helped further by Universal selling tie-in rights worth $50M thus the studio need the pic to make $150M in the US and that means they were looking for the Pic to bow at $50M, their lowest estimates were about $32M. Part of the problem appears to be the studio's failure to capture the younger audience, demographics show the audience composition was 66% of the audience over the age of 25, while Males made up 57% of the whole. Thus the picture bowing at $25.3M is a major disappointment for the studio as that would suggest the film will have major difficulties in even clearing $100M before it closes. The film ranks as the Studio's 59th best opening, Already people are asking whether the film will manage to outperform "John Carter", that pic took $200.6M Offshore, bowed domestically to $30M and went onto gross $72M and a Worldwide $272M. Also bowing to less than expected was "The Dictator", the picture took $17.4M this weekend ranking it as Sasha Baron Cohen's 6th best opening, better than "Hugo"'s $11.3M but lower than the $26M debut of "Borat" and the $30M of "Bruno". Paramount bizarrely chose to open the picture on Wednesday which undoubtedly took some of the pics oxygen. The Pic has so-far grossed $24.6M Demographics show the audience was 65% Male, and 56% of the audience were under the age of 25. The picture did much better in the Metropoli with many cinemas in LA and NYC producing theatre averages nearly twice that of the fly-over states. Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" dropped by a hefty 57% this weekend taking $12.8M which brings its cume to $50.9M. The decline is much heavier than nomal Depp/Burton tie-ins, "Alice" dropped 46% in its 2nd weekend, "Sweeny Tood" 11%, "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" 49%. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" attempted to follow in the footsteps of "Valentine's Day" piling up the cast list with a host of A-/B/C actors booking each for one or two days which means that they can come cheaply. "Valentine's Day" started this wheel rolling bowing to $52M though "New Year's Day" rather killed the genre when it opened to just $13M and closed with $56M. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" also suggests the spokes have come off this trend bowing to just $10.5M this weekend. LGF would have probably been happier if the film had opened with $15M For Director Kirk Jones, the film marks his 2nd biggest opener, beaten by "Nanny McPhee" which debuted to $14.5M but from just 1,995 theatres. "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" took $3.2M this weekend a 21.6% increase from last weekend despite staying with the same number of theatres. The film has now cumed $8.3M in the US and a Worldwide $84M "The Hunger Games" dropped by a 3rd this weekend but still managed to produce $3M in its 9th weekend, the film has now accumulated $391M in the US, Usurped by the "Avengers", it now ranks as the year's 2nd biggest picture and the 14th biggest picture in the all-time US Box Office. It's slowly crawling towards the $402M that "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" grossed at the US Box Office in 2009. "Think like a Man" took $2.7M bringing its gross to $85.9M. "The Lucky One" took $1.8M bringing its Cume to $56.9M, The film ranks as the 4th biggest film in Nicholas Sparks adaptations, needing another $6M to overtake "The Last Song". Finally "Pirates!Band of Misfits" takes $1.4M bringing its US Cume to just $25M Code:
Th’tres Average Gross Budget 1. “The Avengers” $55.0M -46.6% 4,249 $12,958 $457.1M $220M 2. “Battleship” $25.3M 3,690 $6,856 $25.3M $209M 3. “The Dictator” $17.4M 3,008 $5,790 $24.6M $65M 4. “Dark Shadows” $12.8M -57.0% 3,755 $3,401 $50.9M $150M 5. “What to Expect..” $10.5M 3,021 $3,476 $10.5M $40M 6. “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” $3.2M +21.6% 178 $18,258 $8.3M 7. “The Hunger Games” $3.0M -33.4% 2,064 $1,453 $391.6M $78M 8. “Think Like a Man” $2.7M -53.6% 1,722 $1,568 $85.9M $12M 9. “The Lucky One” $1.8M -57.0% 2,005 $880 $56.9M $25M 10. “Pirates!Band of Misfits” $1.4M -53.9% 1,840 $788 $25.3M $55M |
