Predicted Weekend

This weekend sees 3 new, but largely unpublicized pics and we're also expecting a bit of a post nominations Oscar bump. Fandango as of yesterday were reporting very low ticket sales for all films so expect the weekend performance to be pretty muted

Expected to top the charts this weekend is Liam Neeson's "The Gray", hist last picture "Unknown" opened at $21M across 3,043 theatres, though the pic before that, "The Next 3 Days" opened at just $6M but that was on just 2,564 venues. So a cautious $15M is anticipated this weekend as the picture will be opening in 3,185 cinemas.

George Lucas's "Red Tails" is expected to drop 40% this weekend so it should take 2nd spot with $11M. "Underworld" will drop about 55% which should give it a weekend of $10.5M which should see it in 3rd spot.

"Extremely, Loud and Incredibly Close" is hoping to have a bump from its unexpected Oscar Nominations, and may drop by as little as 10%.

Sam Worthington's hasn't yet had to open a film so "Man on a Ledge" will be his first test, his last pic "The Debt" opened at $9.9M across 1,826 theatres. This film is bowing on 2,800 venues and should open at $8.5M.

After a disappointing 2010 when both "Killers" and "Life as we Know it" failed at the Box Office, Katherine took 2011 off and so "One for the Money" will be an interesting test to see whether her time has passed. Unfortunately the pic is expected to open at just $8M marking her worst opening since 2005's "The Ringer".

"The Descendants" is one of the few pictures this week that has had any marketing activity this week and boosted by its Oscar Noms, is expected to return to the charts. "The Artist" might just creep into the charts though it may just be edged out by "Haywire"

Code:
1. “The Grey” Predicted W’kend $15.0M
2. “Red Tails” $11.0M
3. “Underworld Awakening” $10.5M
4. “Extremely Loud..” $9.7M
5. “Man on a Ledge” $8.5M
6. “One for the Money” $8.0M
7. “Contraband” $7.5M
8. “Beauty & the Beast” $6.0M
9. “The Descendants” $5.5M
10. “The Artist” $4.5M

US Weekend

"They Grey" did much better than expected, with a weekend of $20M which was right at the top of expectations. That's the 25th best opening for a January picture and for Liam Neeson it ranks as his 11th best Opening (3 of which are Narnia pics plus the Phantom Menace). The picture was just $1.8M behind "Unknown"'s opening of $21.8M (which incidentally is Neeson's 10th biggest opener).

Audience breakdown shows Males making up 60% of the audience

"Underworld Awakening"'s 50.6% decline was much better than expected and thus takes 2nd spot. The 2nd weekend decline is the franchises best, which is typically at 56-57% (though Lycans dropped by 63%) and with a Cume of $45.1M it's about to overtake "Lycan"'s total gross of $45.8M.

However in a weekend filled with moderately inexpensive budgets the pictures $70M budget looks overpriced and it's difficult to see the picture making $70M before it closes in the US, though it stands a strong chance of overtaking "Evolution"'s $62M Gross and become the Franchises biggest earner, though "Evolution" cost $50M.

Looks like LGF starts off another wretched year as Katheine Heigl's "One for the Money" bows at just $11.7M. The film is based upon Stephanie Plum's Detective Novels and if LGF hoped that this could kick off a franchise the weekend has dashed those hopes.

The Picture is Heigl's worst wide opening picture ever (only 2005's "The Ringer" and 1994's "My Father, the Hero" have opened worse and both those pictures opened in just 1,000 theaters. It's time that studios stopped paying Heigl her $13M fee.

Part of the reason for the low take was the amount of discounted tickets, LGF offered 20 million, $6 tickets (worth about $1.8M of revenue). Though the vouchers are good for the entire run of the picture and it's unknown how many were redeemed this weekend.

Audience breakdown was heavily skewed older female with 80% of the Audience being women and 74% were aged 30 or over.

"Red Tails" didn't hold quite as well as expected, dropping 44% rather then the very high 30's anticipated the films Cume now stands at $33.8M ranking as the year's 5th biggest picture.

Sam Worthington's "Man on a Ledge" came in pretty much as anticipated, slightly lower than the $9.9M Opening of "The Debt" and applying the rule of 3 suggests the film might just scrape a match of the budget. However it looks as if Worthington is not going to ever be leading man material and looks set to forever be a co-star

Audience break down was even with it being 50% Male, 50% Female and 70% under the age of 35.

Incidentally tickets for "Man on a Ledge" were also offered via "Living Social" though Summit and couponing seems to be a popular method of getting people to see lesser known pics.

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was an unexpected contender in the Oscars (hence the loud whoops at the ceremony) though it didn't quite pic up as much Oscar bounce as expected, the picture took $7.1M this weekend which brings it within a hairs breadth of its $25M price tag.

"The Descendants" on the other hand had a huge bounce (176%) though its Oscar budget saw it reopen in 1,441 theatres. Though it looks as if "The Artist" will scoop the awards George can take some consolation that in the US that in the US "The Artist" has taken just $16M in the 10 weeks that it has been out and is still struggling to widen, this weekend it increased by 235 theatres and is now available in 897 venues and took $3.3M

Also outside of the charts (#16), "Hugo" took $2.2M this weekend representing a 142% increase from last weekend the film has now taken $58.7M disastrously adrift of its $140M budget.

"Contraband" took $6.5M this weekend bringing its Cume to $56.4M thus making it the biggest film of the year, overtaking "The Devil Inside" which had held the top spot with $52.7M. For Wahlberg, the picture now ranks as his 12th biggest picture, bust just $1M behind "Invincible" and will soon overtake "Three Kings" which sits at #10 with $60.6M

"Beauty and the Beast 3D" comes in 9th spot with $5.3M this pushes the pictures overtall take to $212M, making it now the 102nd biggest picture at the US Box Office (it pushed pass "The 300" and "Back to the Future" who've each made $210M. Another $1M will overtake "Austin Powers: Goldmember" and when it reaches $215M then it will have overtaken "Xmen 2"'s $214M and re-enter the 100 biggest US pictures

Rounding off the 10 comes Soderbergh's "Haywire" the films $15.3M Cume makes it the 8th biggest film of the year, it passed "Solaris"'s $14.9M take to become the Director's 10th biggest picture. It now trails the $24M of 89's "Sex, Lies & Videotape".

With just 2 days remaining, January has so far earned $313M, down from 2011's $329M, as I said above biggest picture was "Contraband" which has so far earned $56.4M. Last year, January's biggest picture was "Green Hornet" which took $98M by the end of the month. Both pictures opened at the same point (Jan 14th/jan 13th). The Monthly gross is the lowest since 2007 which saw the month gross $266M and "Stomp the Yard" was the months biggest picture which took $61.4M

Code:
1. “The Grey” $20.0M 3,185 $6,279 $20.0M $25M

Overseas Weekend

A $12.7M weekend bow in China helps return "Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol" back to the top of the Overseas Chart this weekend, the film also bowed in Italy to $3.1M. The film can now be found 7,837 theatres across 63 markets.

The picture's Overseas Cume now stands at $369M and Worldwide it has grossed $571.6M, this makes it the 8th biggest picture of 2011, overtaking "Cars 2" & "The Smurfs" this week and now sits $10M behind "Hangover 2"'s $581M Worldwide take. The Worldwide Gross also means that the picture is now the franchises biggest worldwide earner having overtaken "MI2"'s $546M Global Box Office back in 2000.

Slipping down one spot after three weeks at #1 comes "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" with a $17.3M Weekend Box Office. The film is playing 58 territories and biggest earner was France where the picture opened this week to $6.6M.

WB say the picture is 14% ahead of its predecessor at a comparable point and expect this picture to overtake its predecessor in the overseas Market where it grossed a total of $314M and worldwide $524M. The second pic has so far accumulated $469.3M Worldwide which makes it the 14th biggest picture of 2011, trailing "Planet of the Apes"'s $481M take.

"Underworld Awakening" expanded to 47 markets this weekend, taking $16M and making it the 3rd biggest picture this weekend. Best earners were Australia where the pic bowed to $2.8M, Russia's second weekend saw it raise $2M, closely followed by Spain where the picture opened to $2M and Mexico's bow was worth $1.9M.

Total Worldwide take for the film is $84.9M, making it briefly, 2012's biggest picture (followed by Contraband with a Global $63M).

After weeks outside of the top 10, George Clooney's "The Decendants" rockets into the charts with $15.6M earned this weekend from 33 markets. A spate of openings were responsible with the UK bowing at $2.8M, France opened to $1.7M and Germany $1.6M. In Spain a 2nd weekend saw it take $2.2M. The film has now grossed $85.7M worldwide.

"Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" finds itself in 5th spot with a $10.8M weekend, the film is now playing 60 offshore markets, no market earned more than $1M (Brazil was the biggest with $960K) but the film has now grossed $184M Wordwide which sees it pass the magix 2x budget figure

"Puss in Boots" celebrates its 13th weekend taking $7.1M from 59 markets. The pictures Worldwide take now stands at $507M making it the 11th biggest picture of the year, unlikely to break the top 10 as "Cars 2" sits at almost $60M ahead.

Globally, the picture is Dreamwork's 8th biggest earner, 2005's "Madagascar" sits at #7 with 532. When you consider that the top 7 comprise 3 x "Shrek"'s, 2 x "Kung Fu Panda"'s and 2 x "Madagascar"'s Jeffery Katzenberg should be pretty happy with its performance.

"Journey 2: Mysterious Island" takes $7M this weekend from 8 markets, that represents a 10% drop from last weekend.

It's performance may not have met expectations but this weekend sees "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" at #8 with $6.8M taken from 46 markets. The film has earned a worldwide take of $308M making it the 19th biggest picture of 2011.

"The Intouchables"continues to run and ruin, like "Puss and Boots" it's been out for 13 weeks now and still earned $6.4M but from only 2 Territories. French markets producing $2M this weekend while German territories provided $4.3M. The films Offshore take now stands at $173M making it 21st biggest pic in last years Offshore chart.

Finally Adam Sandler's wretched "Jack and Jill" squeezes into the top 10 with $4.9M, the film is playing 32 territories and Germany was by far the biggest earner where it opened to $1.9M. The films Worldwide Take now stands at just $104M still a long way from making the $140M that it needs to become profitable

Predicted Weekend

Superbowl weekend invariably sees a boost in attendance by woman and a decline in men (particularly Sunday) and this the saw is that Women aimed at women tend to do better

Quite what market "Woman in Black" is aimed at is unsure, the film is produced by Hammer their 2nd film released in the US Market following their re awkening is distributed by CBS and stars Daniel Radcliffe trying to prove that he has a career after Harry Potter.

The film shows marked Twitter and Facebook activity so Friday Night should be strong and the picture sold 9% of Fandgo's tickets on Wednesday. Look for the pic to take $17M this weekend which should give it #1 spot.

"Chronicle" tells the tale of 3 High school Friends who gain Superpowers following discovery of a mysterious substance, The film mines the found footage genre that lately ("Apollo 18","Darkest Hour") haven't been doing so well but a $14M weekend is expected.

"Big Miracle" tells of Whales stuck in a rapidly freezing Alaskan bay and stars Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski and Krisitin Bell. None of which are guaranteed Box Office openers and consequently this weekend is expected to take about $9.5M. Which may see it nudge just ahead of "The Grey" which is expected to drop by about 50% giving it a $9M weekend.

Code:
1. “The Woman in Black” Predicted W’kend $17.0M
2. “Chronicle” $14.0M
3. “Big Miracle” $9.5M
4. “The Grey” $9.0M
5. “One for the Money” $6.0M

US Weekend

Talk about over performing, "Chronicle" was expected to weekend with only about $14M this weekend but Chronicle ignored those predictions and weekended with $22M. This makes the pic the 28th best opener for a February picture, just a tad less than 2007's "Bridge to Terabithia" which bowed to $22.5M. The best opener for a February picture is "Passion of the Christ" which opened at $88M in 2004.

"Chronicle" ranks as the 4th best opener for a picture debuting on a Superbowl weekend, $2M less than "Taken"'s bow of $24.7M whilst the best Superbowl weekend bow belongs to "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds" which opened at $31M in 2008.

In the genre of found footage, the picture finds itself as the the 5th best opener, "The Devil Inside" comes in 4th spot which opened at $33M last month. The best opener for a found footage pic belongs to "Paranormal Activity 3" which last year bowed to $52M.

Demographics suggest that 55% of the audience were Male and that 61% were under the age of 25. Overall the film ranked as a "B-" though the under 25 audience pushed this rating to "B+".

Daniel Radcliffe's "The Woman in Black" also over performed taking $21M over the weekend, the first time two films have grossed more than $20M during Superbowl. The film is the 6th best opener on this holiday weekend (2006's "When a Stranger Calls" slips in between it and "Chronicle").

Unsurprisingly, the film ranks as Radcliffe's lowest ever opening except for "December Boys" but that opened on just 4 theatres to $50K. The Screenplay is written by Jane Goldman and this pic marks her 2nd best opener, less than the $55M of "First Class" but marginally better than the $19M of Kick Ass.

For Distributor CBS Films, this pic marks their best opener ever, $10M better than previous holder, Jennifer Lopez's "The Backup Plan".

59% of the audience were Female and 57% of the audience were below the age of 25.

Liam Neeson's "The Grey" fell by 51.7% this was pretty much as expected, the film took $9.5M this weekend bringing the pictures Cume to $34.7M. The film now ranks as Neeson;s 14th biggest picture.

"BIg Miracle" opened slightly under expectations, though Universal are expecting the film to boosted more when Sunday's actuals come in. The film's $8.5M take makes it Barrymore's 17th best opener and the picture looks unlikely to make back its hefty price tag.

68% of the audience were female & 67% of the audience were under the age of 25. The film received an exit rating of "A-"

"Underworld Awakening" came in at $5.6M pretty much as expected, after 17 days the film has so far raised $54.3M putting it ahead of "Evolution" which had taken $52.9M in the same time frame. "Evolution" remains the franchise's best earner having taken a total $62.3M. "Awakening" needs to perform much better than this because of its $70M pricetag compared to the "Evolution"'s $50M

Katherine Heigl's "One for the Money" dropped 54% this weekend, taking $5.2M the film has raised just $19.7M a long way south of its $40M budget ($13M of which was Heigl's salary).

George Lucas's "Red Tails" $5M take this weekend brings its cume to $41.3M the film looks unlikely to match its $58M budget, one reason for the high budget is the many re-shoots that Lucas asked for and the over lengthy editing process.

"The Descendants" takes $4.6M this weekend, this weekend "The Artist" widened by a further 100 venues bringing its coverage to 1,005 theatres but was still unable to crack the 10, finding itself at #12 this weekend with $2.6M.

In one Oscar campaign this weekend, several theatre chain owners this weekend went on record noting that "Though the Artist" may be a critical darling the public are largely staying away in droves

"Descendants" on the other hand has now grossed $65.2M now having tripled its $20M cost .

Sam Worthington's "Man on a Ledge" fell a relatively benign 43.8% this weekend taking $4.5M though like many films this weekend looks unlikely to match its $42M budget.

Finally "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" took $3.9M this weekend and against the general trend actually has now exceed its $25M budget

Overseas Weekend

Arctic temperatures across Eastern and Mittel Europe this weekend didn't seem to temper Cinema going this weekend. "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" takes the #1 spot for the 5th time in its 8 week life-space with $25.8M taken from 64 markets. China was the pic's biggest earner, generating $19.8M from 3,000 venues.

The film has so far accumulated $422.3M Offshore and now stands at a worldwide $627.5M. It has long since beaten "MI2"'s Worldwide Gross of $546M and now ranks as the 6th biggest picture of last year having just squeezed pass "Fast Five"'s $626M Global Gross. It now needs to add another $40M to start challenging "Kung Fu Panda 2"'s gross of $665M.

"Journey 2: Mysterious Island" had a spate of European openings this weekend to coincide with many half terms, it opened at #3 in the UK with $2M and a #1 bow in Mexico saw it take $1.8M. All in all this weekend sees the film take the #2 spot with $14.1M drawn from 19 markets bringing its offshore cume to $41.5M. Unconfirmed reports put the films budget at $50M

Fox opened "Chronicle" across 33 (mostly minor) markets this weekend taking $13M in the process, the UK was the largest of this weekend's bows with $3.6M, Australia also produced $3M.

"Underworld Awakening" comes in at 4th place this weekend with $11.9M, Germany was the biggest earner of the weekend where it bowed at #2 with $3.75M. The picture is now playing 57 markets and has so far grossed $108M Worldwide, as in the US the film is playing catch-up with "Evolution", that pic took a Worldwide $111M and should be surpassed by the end of the day.

George Clooney's "The Descendants" takes $11.2M this weekend from 43 markets, there were no markets producing more than $1M though it still takes the #1 spot in Spain.

Worldwide the picture now ranks as Clooney's 10th biggest earner, just $200K behind "The Peacemaker" from way back in 1997. It'll need a further $10M to overtake "Intolerable Cruelty" which in 2003 earned $120M Worldwide. For Alexander Payne, the film has just surpassed "Sideways" $109M Worldwide gross to become his biggest ever picture.

In France 2nd sequel to "La verite si je mems" ("Would I lie to you?") is not a big screen version of the BBC panel show but instead tells the tale of a group of Parisian textile merchants. The 3rd of the franchise this weekend opened at $10.2M

With no new openings this weekend, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" finds the film at 7th spot with $9.3M taken from 56 markets. With an Offshore Gross of $311M, the pic is about to overtake the $315M Offshore gross of its predecessor. At $494M grossed worldwide the film is catching up on selfsame predecessors Worldwide gross of $524M and with a March 12th bow due in Japan the picture will surely soon be the bigger of the two.

"Shadows" Worldwide take of $494.9M makes the picture the 12th biggest picture of 2011, up 2 spots from last weekend and now it's trailing the $507M of "Puss in Boots" and needs to exceed $559M to become one of last years 10 biggest pictures.

Adam Sandler's "Jack and Jill" is still finding patrons, this weekend it took $2.5M from Russia and $1.5M from the UK (5th spot) overall the picture took $8M from 38 markets, bringing its Offshore Cume to $40.8M and worldwide to $114M.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" looks to have come in spot on Sony's revised expectations, this weekend it earned $7.6M from 62 territories, Italy was the largest where it debuted to $1.1M, globally it has now taken $200M making it a hit even though a minor one.

Finally local language star of 2011 "The Intouchables" just makes it into the 10 with a $7M weekend. This weekend $1M came from France where the picture has now been playing 14 weekend. German markets added the other $6M. The films Cume now stands at $186M making it the 21st biggest pic in last years Offshore chart and could soon overtake "Captain America"'s $192M Offshore take.

Well after one weekend Chronicle is now well into profit, the Director of Chronicle is now on his way to the big leagues.

The Grey despite an ending that has split audiences too looks like it's in profit

but the big news after a few false starts last year , the Name Hammer appears to be Back, the Woman in Black looks like it's going to easily break even in the states and even make a small profit , leaving the international market to produce pure profit and star Radcliffe a second chance at film stardom outside of the Potter series.

"Battleships" may be costing $200M but they're reduced there liability by having secured $50M worth of Promotional Partnerships

The article is worth a read for anyone interested in how much it costs to advertise a film
