I kinda hoped that the Robocop remake was dead in the water, but it seems that MGM are still pressing ahead with a remake/reboot and want Brazilian director Jose Padilha to helm.

as much as I love RoboCop (and RoboCop 2) I think the concept has be diluted and disgraced enough with RoboCop 3, the TV series, the kids' cartoon and the TV movies that I can't object to a remake. Maybe they can even actually restore some quality to the name again - and if they can't, well, its just another bastardisation in the litter.

Yeah, I agree with Lee, the Robocop name is just about as tarnished as a named franchised can get thanks to it being flogged like a dead horse for a cheap buck over and over. If this reboot fails, well then it's just another bargain bin Robocop DVD for completists, no real harm done.
Gotta say, Jose Padilha is an intriguing choice for the directors chair though. I mean, at least they didn't just hire some hack to churn out some standard studio action movie sludge. On the other hand though, I'm still skeptical about there being any life left in the Robocop franchise, it may be one of those things that's just ran it's course.

The first two films are superb and I really enjoyed the TV series. The franchise may have gone downhill from there, however that doesn't reflect badly on the first two films which are classics.
If we do see a remake then I would like to see a real physical Robocop, no CGI. The remake will also have to be in-keeping with the original film and not a watered down version. If the new film is a failure, then so be it, but it wont make the first two films any less original or enjoyable. |

there is alots for a 'robocop' reboot to cover.
along with advances in technlogy since the 1st film there is room for satire that could be minded from a post 9/11, dubya, obama, tea party era world. Last edited by badhat-h; 15-03-2011 at 09:14 AM. |

True, but if this re-imagined robo is a world away from the original in terms of design and setting, then why not make a completely new film?

changing the look of the original for a reboot doesn't mean that the heart of the original will be lost.
