Right, im back. I was thinking of joining a writers group in my area but i think that here would be a much better place for me to be.

ok...

podcaster... yeah thats obvious.... got a 'book' out first septermber but its not really fiction... had lots of rejections for my short fiction and im now moving on at a slow rate through a novel... 17k mark so far.

Updates as they happen

just finished my flash fiction for wicked east and will be sending it in today

also, can i thow this out there...what do you guys think of fan fiction? Good, bad anyone ever tried it?
I wrote a lot of fn fic, basically spent 8 years give or take on my own trek series: star trek vesta, I think it was a great way to start writing and hone the craft. That said obvuously the opportunities to be published are slim so I wouldn't go back to it now, it's fun to play in someone else's sandbox but these days I prefer building my own sandbox

Ive sent my short story to a few friends. So far feedback has been very positive. Still waiting to hear from the pros I know who are going to rip it to shreds perhaps, but constructive criticism is always good.

Of the three people who have responded, I have had "Really good", "Excellent" and one who said it was "F*ckin' Brilliant". Mind you that is friends for you. They will tend to give you positive praise. We shall see how the pros like it.

Well done & good luck. I know its a nerve racking experience handing your baby over to someone else!

Freefall - regarding fanfic, nothing wrong with it at all. It helps you learn the trade whist building confidence in your abilities. I did some Dr. Who fanfic a while back (2007, hell 5 years back) and posted it on A Teaspoon And An Open Mind...

Deadlier Than The Male PT#1

and

Deadlier Than The Male PT#2

Never got round to finishing it, maybe when I have time.

Stumpy, good one. Keep 'em comin'!

FREEFALL, fan fic. If you rummage around on fanfiction.net (iirc) under my name, you'll find a couple of Discworld fanfics I wrote a few years ago. I'm still proud of them - they're as close to a Pratchettian tone as I could get, but still distinctive stories he'll never tell, and they worked pretty well. As a writing exercise they were fun and instructive. Matter of fact, I've even picked up a few fans who'd like more. By all means, write 'em, just think of them as training.

Mind you, there is some awful, awful stuff out there - if you've never read 'My Immortal', look it up, and find out just how BAD fanfic can be. You'll also laugh a lot too.

I started an ambitious project last week. One of the many things written and posted after the death of Ray Bradbury was a list of tips he'd suggested for writers. One of the tips was write at least one short story a week.

I decided to attempt that and posted a tweet asking for prompts, I got a few and made a start.

The first prompt was It always seemed to rain on a Wednesday, from that I wrote THIS.

Currently working on the second prompt Oban which is turning out quite interesting.

Anyone fancy giving me a prompt feel free, I'm hoping to keep this up for a while, but other projects are ongoing that may mean there are interruptions.

A short story every week?

If only I had the time! ha ha

Good for you though and I can see how it's a good tool for improving your writing.

That's the plan, but it is already faltering. I'd plan to write it over lunchtimes, but other matters have hindered me and so far I've barely started on the second story!

A challenge: I'll give you the last line. I thought of this line a couple of days ago, and weas going to us it myself, but go ahead.

Hand in hand, they ran laughing to the sea.

Have fun.
