Default Advice/reassurance

Hello. Hope everyone and their bundles of joy are ok.

Congrats to Jaelle and Rakir!

I'm after some advice/reassurance from parents of 3+ kids.

My son is 3 and has been going to nursery since September. He's been coughing almost constantly since October. He'll have a cough for about a week, have a couple of cough free days and then start coughing again. Once he's started with another one we'll have a night where he coughs until he vomits, often more than once. We're not so worried about this as we've read that coughs are often worse at night and that kids often trigger their gag reflex by coughing.

We've taken him to the doctor several times. They say they can't diagnose asthma until he's 5 but have given us 2 different sprays to see if they have any affect. We don't believe it is asthma though as he doesn't have any trouble breathing (no wheezing or shortness of breath) and his mother suffered from with it when she was younger so knows what to look for. Also neither of the sprays seem to make any difference.

We've bought him anti allergy bedding and turned the heating in his bedroom down as low as possible but this doesn't seem to have worked.

Both me and his mother smoke but not around him and never in the house.

The other theory the doctor has suggested is that he just keeps picking up bugs from nursery. This what we're leaning towards as he has had a few runny noses as well and the cough clears gradually with increased time between coughs the longer he's had it.

It's getting to the stage where we're finding it hard to relax at home whenever he's coughing as we're wondering if we're going to have to drop everything to clean up a fresh batch of vomit.

I guess what I'm wondering is, is it normal for kids of nursery age to be ill almost constantly for more than 5 months? Anyone had experience of this?

Have you guys asked for a blood test?

We have found with both our daughters, (3 & 2) long term symptoms that were both eventually diagnosed with a blood test.

And both are now symptom free and fine.

Its a nasty thing to put them through, but the peace of mind, and possible resolution afterwards is worth it.

Harry is 17 months and has been at nursery for almost a year now. He's had the usual coughs and colds but nothing like what you describe, it does seem a bit much.

Hope you get it sorted soon.
