We're on episode 14 of the original series. In a bit of a dilemma though -- I know it's supposed to veer off radically about halfway through, although we're well into it now, and I don't really fancy starting brotherhood so soon. Up until the series goes off and does its own thing, just how different are they?

Last night we watched the Sakura TV episode of Death Note -- I've read the manga, so I know what happens, but my friends haven't, and that blew them away when they saw the end of the episode! Suuuuch a good show!

I'd like to see a second series but I'd say it's unlikely. I must see what the manga is like.

I watched this 2 weeks ago and found it very enjoyable, loved it a lot and was hoping they'd make a second series but with what's happened in Japan they might not get around to it...

The bulk of the story in the first 25 or so episodes of the original FMA are retold in the first 11 or so episodes (at a very fast pace) of Brotherhood as well as having some original plot points. Once the plots diverge though it's like a different series, most of the characters act the same and there are some very notable new ones. The events are very different too.

I think seeing the original at the more leisurely pace help you enjoy (make more sense of) those early Brotherhood episodes.

A good example is the events of episode 9 (the one in the mining town) in the original anime are not retold in Brotherhood but are stated as having happened (mostly) they way it happened in the original. The events in Liore/Lior/Reole are cut down to a single episode too.

I can see a super special edition coming out in a few years with all the slower paced events from the original cut into the appropriate place in Brotherhood making an 80ish episode ultimate series.

Apparently the second series is finished and was due to be out earlier this year but was held back because of the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear reactor leak, so go the rumours anyway.

Just finished the fourth disc of Death Note -- it's been a while since I read it, but I almost forgot just how awesomely well-written it is! I love how it's one of those rare shows which follows the manga almost shot for shot, and is all the better for it. We've just been introduced to Misa Amane (I'm gonna be spoiler free), but anyone who's seen/read it knows just how awesome it gets in the few episodes after she shows up!

Death Note is the example I use to prove that all cartoons are in fact not for kids. If that fails I show them some clips from Legend of the Overfiend.
