Just got back from seeing it, was very good despite not a lot happened for first part of the movie but the breakout/ bridge scene made up for it.
MoCap was very well done so was the CGI. I did find it really hard to watch because of the treatment of Caesar and the apes in general. Not only when they were being mistreated in the 'sanctuary' but when he was looking out of the window in the scientists house etc I found myself getting upset. James Franco was good and seeing John Lithgow was a pleasant surprise particularly after his turn in Dexter. 4/5 for me and hopefully there will be a sequel. |

It really was quite upsetting andemotional. A total triumph of CGI coupled with motion capture - Oscars have to take note soon, even if only to give Serkis a special award.

I got to see this last night and found it to be very good, a very 21st century and very plausible solution to how the apes begin to take over, and what happens to humanity to allow for their ascendance. Genetic experimentation and the fear of a global pandemic plays very much into the fears of today's society very much like how the original movie with its tale of the human race wiping itself out in a nuclear war played into the fears of that time. Which is why I think it works so well on so many levels. With regards to a sequel, that would be nice, but I think the mid credits sequence tells us pretty much all we need to know about what happens next. Though I suppose other movies focusing on other key events on the future/historical road map from this movie to the original Planet of the Apes movie could be fun and interesting to see.
Another nice touch are all the little nods, some subtle, some not so much to the original movies, and the sci-fi genre in general. Obviously the obligatory "Get your hands off me you damned dirty ape!" line is going to get shoe-horned in there somewhere, but it works well here and is actually used in a key sequence, other elements include news reports of the Icarus mission lift off (which also opens the franchise up for a sequel in that direction if they wish), another nice one is Caesar holding up a weapon in a fashion that calls to mind 2001, I almost expected him to throw it up and a spaceship spin into shot. There'll also be plenty others that I've not mentioned here (that someone else has indeed mentioned above though). The apes themselves are also pretty flawless, as ever Andy Serkis provides an excellent performance brimming with subtle physicality, and when it eventually all kicks off? Wow, you're just going to love that. This was one of those movies that when it first started to appear on the scene I wasn't so sure about, and then as the promotion of the movie went into overdrive the more I saw the more interesting it became until it rose in my mind into a must-see movie, and on finally seeing it? It didn't disappoint. Easily one of my favourite movies of the year, up there with X-Men: First Class. |

errrrrrr
Actually I thought this was a pretty average film and is suffering from a little bit of over hype! The Acting was fine , especially from Lithgow.....James franco however ...I'm sorry didn't convince me as a "Brilliant Scientist!" but again was fine....the problem was the screenplay....too many leaps of logic were made so the story could advance........especially Bright Eyes and the Birth of Caesar........(You are seriously telling me that a group of vetenarians , biologists and doctors failed to notice one of the apes was pregnant!?!?!??!) The same again with the ape uprising especially with the sequence on the bridge....it just made no sense and smacked of lazy writing. But the main problem with the screenplay is the pro ape nature of the story ....yes I know it's the prequel telling the story of how ceasar came to power but I found the whole Humans are bad storyline misguided at best.....remember the whole point of Planet of the Apes is that once in charge they were as bad if not worse than us, say what you like about the godawful sequels in the seventies but it got across that Caesars attempt to control the apes own anger and vices are doomed to failure. This ...this is just a fairly average "Four legs good, two legs bad" story whose problems can be summed up by the character of Francos next door neighbour who spends the entire film just shouting at people. To me this is an entertaining but flawed piece that I really do believe has been slightly overhyped and in a couple of months (never mind years) people will be asking what was all the fuss about. |

The story makes less and less sense the more I think about it. But then again, as none of the humans (except for Lithgow) really had any character to speak of I suppose I can't really accuse them of acting out of character when they do stupid or nonsensical things.... Ceasar is an amazing creation and Serkis showed, once again, how good he is at this sort of thing. It's just a shame the plot and human performances weren't given the same level of attention. I'm still wondering why they even bothered to call the film 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' as (until the credits!) there's nothing going on a global scale (and last time I checked San Fransisco wasn't a Planet) and the Apes don't really rise, they just get smart and go out for trip to the woods. Unless you know the premise of the originals films it's just a film about some smart Apes that outsmart a lot of nasty humans. And, if you've seen the trailer you've seen the film....
