Pretty much what Wert said but Joe never bought me a pint...

I loved The Blade Itself, though I found it a little impenetrable at the beginning. What I loved the most across the books was that I fell in love with the characters that I knew I would, but that those characters who were apologetically cruel or selfish grew on me too. And the characters develop in a way which is believable, instead of inserting ridiculous viewpoints where they don't fit, or backpedalling massively.

I was shocked at the weekender, because he looked nothing like how I imagined the author of something so dark would look. Which possibly says more about me than I should allow, but I was shocked, in the same way I was shocked at how Justina Robson looked. I hadn't even realise I'd imagined how they'd look in the first place.

As a result of listening to Joe reading, I suspect the way I read his books when I go back again will change. Is anyone else going to be reading in his tone of voice and inflections?

I did have a smile to myself when looking through his website and saw you and Wert on his links list.

I think it's fair to say that without the endorsement of worthies such as myself and Deornoth, Joe would have sold far fewer books.

Well, maybe 'far' would be extreme.

Okay, two less. Maybe.

Also 'worthy' may also by pushing it.

I'll get me coat.

They are well worth reading, well thought out, great characters.

He does have a potty mouth though

Nothing wrong with that. I refer you to Mightygodking's excellent take on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice.

I've read the First Law trilogy, and it is a cracking read. It is dark, but also Glokta, the inquisitor (or torturer if you prefer) is one of the funniest characters despite his profession and what he gets up to. A great series.

Best Served Cold is actually darker and a much murkier tale, and it's not a spoiler at all to say it is a revenge story at its heart.

His new book (expected maybe 2011 I think) The Heroes is another standalone book set in the same world, but I would definitely recommend reading the First Law first, as there are lots of easter eggs and nods in BSC for those who have read the trilogy.
