To be fair to the Talking Twiglet, Knightley isn't really required in the Pirates flicks to do much other than pout and look pretty, and any more dynamic characterization would have highlighted just how crap Orlando Bloom was. Yong Keira can occasionally turn in a decent performance, and has started to generate some kind of screen-presence. Stewar is just...bland. As I said earlier, when the supporting characters are more interesting, engaging and possessed of personality than the supposed lead...something's gone seriously wrong.

Well, that is pretty disappointing. I was hoping for something brilliant when it came to this and it sounds like its all a bit meh if pretty to look at. I'll wait for it to come on Sky.

I see that Ray Winstone has decided to improve his dramatic range from playing a Mockney hardman, to playing a Mockney hardman dwarf.

I actually quite enjoyed it. I even managed to get through it without wanting to punch Kristen Stewart in the face, which is usually my default setting.
Yes, there were problems. Why did Hemsworth have that accent? Couldn't he just have used his normal voice? Or, failing that, turn the dial down on the Thorvoice? That would have worked. I did feel that there didn't seem to be that much point to the dwarves, really. A missed opportunity there. And THAT speech. Oh dear. Never mind, at least she tried, eh? The Queen's brother just gave me the creeps. I physically recoiled when he was on screen. I thought Theron was the best thing in it. She attacked it with gusto, I give her that. I appreciate that they tried not to paint her as a one-dimensional, panto villian, and gave her some sort of backstory. So, overall, not an amazing film, but enjoyable enough for me.

About as uneven as Chris Hemsworth's Scottish accent, this movie has some great action scenes and the occasional flash of a good bit of cinema, but at other times is dull and flat.
The story riffs on the common telling of the Snow White story, but ramps up the battles. In interviews it has been referred to as more of a war movie. It's not really, but the battles do have something in them that a lot of the movie misses, they are always very watchable. The director, Rupert Sanders, clearly has a talented for such scenes. Along with the fighting, another of the best scenes is when Snow escapes from the castle early on. It's tense, exciting and again, visually brilliant. It's when the pace drops that the film struggles. The acting is mostly flat too. It's the first time I've seen Kristen, and while she definitely looks the part, she's fairly expressionless throughout. The script doesn't help her much, but even Daniel Radcliffe tried a couple of different looks occasionally. I keep hearing that she can act, I must see a few of her other films, because she wasn't great here. Hemsworth had none of the charm or charisma that his most famous character, Thor, did in either of the two films he played the role. Just like with the mysterious accent, you wonder why. Luckily, Theron is on hand to save the movie in that department, she was excellent again, just as she was in this years Young Adult (her crazy performance), and Prometheus (her robotic like performance - in a good way), here the two seemed to be combined, and she was easily the best on display, playing a role similar to Michelle Pfieffer in Stardust. The effects work on the queen are also superb, and generally good throughout. Another problem I think is the lack of humour. The dwarves provide a bit of this, but it really is only a few lines, and everything else seems to be played far too straight. The subject matter may not lend itself to laughs, but I still think a little more on the playful side may have been good. The script is kind of dopey (pun intended) at times too, for example someone shouts "Stop her" at Snow, when she is standing still, and Hemsworth says "Cant she see I'm taking a bath" about the queen, when she couldn't possibly see him. There are a few clumsy moments like that that stick out. And three people wrote it. The score was excellent. Really sweeping and majestic when required, but scaled back when it wasn't, that was one part of the movie that was noticeably almost perfect. So, Ok, it wasn't terrible by any means, but I sure thought it was going to be a lot more exciting than it was. |
