This is small press, and probably unusual. Published through public subscription.

Quote:
‘And so, my friends,’ he said, looking back at each one of us in turn, ‘It falls to me to pass this burden to someone other than myself. I dare not ask, yet I hope that you will take it for me. The statue must be recovered and destroyed before these men find it.’
Europe, 1925. The continent still licks its wounds from the devastating war that raged across it a few years before. Meanwhile, in London, an ageing professor has uncovered the clues to the whereabouts of pieces of an ancient statue, all but forgotten by history.

When his investigations lead him to fear for his life, he enlists the aid of an unlikely group of allies; a retired colonel, a secretive academic, a magician’s wife, and a Yorkshire matriarch and her reluctant assistant.

Together they will journey across Europe to recover the long-lost statue. They will travel in style, on the most luxurious train the world has ever seen. Unbeknownst to them, however, their activities have already attracted the attention of a sinister cult, desperate to acquire the artefact for their own dark purposes, and now a terrible creature, trapped for centuries, senses that the opportunity for revenge has come at last...

THE EXPRESS DIARIES is a tale of a journey into darkness and horror on the world's most famous train.

Public Subscription process completed.

Available now on Kindle, my monochrome fantasy The Rat And The Serpent.

Originally published in 2005, this is the latest of my novels to be republished as an ebook.

“Image a film made in black-and-white. Now imagine a novel written in black-and-white.

The Rat and the Serpent is a gothic tale that follows the extraordinary fate of Ugli the cripple. Raised as a beggar in the soot-shrouded Mavrosopolis, Ugli has to scramble for scraps of food in the gutter if he is to survive. But one day his desperation and humiliation is noticed by the mysterious Zveratu, and soon he is taking his first faltering steps into the world of the citidenizens. He meets the seductive Raknia and the arrogant Atavalens; one destined to be his lover, the other his mortal enemy. But as Ugli ascends he becomes aware of a strange darkness at the heart of the city in which he lives. Slowly, he realises that the Mavrosopolis exists gloomy and forbidding around a terrible secret…”

Reviews:

“… the vividly depicted grim urban setting and numerous absorbing secondary characters keep the pages turning.” (Publishers Weekly)

“… some interesting ideas, a new take on the cityscape, and some lovely imagery. And any book that causes me to think so much about its intentions has to be worth a read.” (Emerald City)

“… a novel written in black and white in the same way that a movie is filmed in black-and-white, and that indeed is both uncommon and borne out by the crisp prose.” (Trashotron)

“… what we're being invited to read here is a sort of livre noir, black-and-white in the cinematic sense. A novel literally without colour. And [Palmer] has been thorough about this -- not only is no colour beyond the monochrome named, all things and substances in the book (most notably food) have been carefully chosen for their blackness, whiteness or greyness. Characters dine on "goat's cheese, olives and rice, mushrooms fried in squid ink," for example. It's an original reading experience, a rich and velvety kind of monochrome.” (Infinity Plus)

I thought it would be nice to do some readings from The Express Diaries. Here's The Ladies of the Orient Express, each reading an entry by their original character.

Hmmm, three posts in a row. I think I'll make this one the last, then.

After concluding a successful fundraiser for THE EXPRESS DIARIES, the book should see print from Innsmouth House Press in September.

Feel free to follow the links in the above posts to read an example chapter and hear readings from the book by the author and others.

Thumbs up Re: Hello! I am pimping my self-published/small press book

Hi, I'm promoting by book Threshold Shift.

In 2006 and 2007 I was one of the top 50 runners up for SFX Pulp Idol.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Threshold-Sh...0350918&sr=1-1

Product Description
'I will hurt you more than you hurt me. Death will be a long time coming.'

On the frontier planet of Threshold a hard won truce exists between the native inhabitants and the human settlers. When a murder puts this truce in jeopardy, Marshal Jacob Klein must try to see justice done, whatever the cost.

But Klein has his own problems - an addiction to a fatal narcotic, a disenfranchised son, and a dark secret he has been hiding for over two decades.

For there is a greater threat to Threshold than just a petty civil war. An ancient presence has invaded the planet for its own purposes and Jacob Klein is in no shape to stop it.

Reviews:

Very Enjoyable

I got through this book in just a few days. It's very easy to read, and has a very tightly focused plot with action and character development in equal measure. The story is fcentred around three central protagonists. There's Jon Klein, who must deal with the death of his mother very early on. There's Jacob Klein, his father, the Marshal, who has been a very competent Marshal for years, but now find himself addicted to performance enhancing drugs he can no longer find. Then there is Roe, the Marshal's young female deputy, headstrong and confident, she must deal with the fact that the Marshal is not the perfect man she thought he was.

Overhanging all this is, is the main thrust of the plot. I don't want to give too much away, but the conflict between the native lizard Threshians and the Marshal's corner is very old style western given a new spin in a sci fi format. But beyond this are deeper subplots and complications that take the story to a whole new level and just kept surprising me. It's worth reading just to find out what Jacob's dark secret is and how it affects everyone he loves.

The style is fast, punchy. The writer is very economical with his wordage and as a result the book doesn't pause for breath until the very end. The dialogue is always sharp and the characters are clichéd but believable. I did find myself caring about them. It's not a classic, but it is a lot of fun to read.

Fast Paced Action Packed Sci Fi Thriller

A gripping read from start to finish, I really enjoyed this novel. The author has done a great job creating a world of intriguing characters and concepts. His vision unfolds as the story progresses keeping you wanting to read more.

The story begins with Jon an 11 year old boy whom after escaping a fire of their family home is taken by the Threshians , an alien race which inhabits Threshold that Jon has only previosuly encountered via an online battlefield. Not initially aware of his mother's fate Jon manages to escape and the story begins to unfold!

10 years later both Jon and his father, the Threshold Marshal, end up on an adventure which will change everything both for Threshold and themselves.

I look forward to another Threshold adventure. I highly recommend purchasing this very well priced novel. You will not be disappointed.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick heads-up on the publication from PS Publishing of the first of a trio of new ebooks, beginning with my 1996 Orbit Books debut Memory Seed.

http://www.pspublishing.co.uk/memory...mer-1397-p.asp

This is its first ever appearance as an ebook, following a mighty effort scanning individual pages, reformatting the text, then preparing it, but I am really pleased about its publication. And my thanks, as ever, to Pete Crowther and Mike Smith.

Memory Seed was reviewed at the time in SFX by Dan Abnett, and he loved it!
