I must confess that I never owned a ZX SPECTRUM - although my Cousin did and whenever I visited his house we would spend some time playing games.
The ones I remember most were FOOTBALL MANAGER (the old KEVIN TOMS classic, which now seems very basic but was fantastic at the time), SPORT OF KINGS (the horse racing game, as my Cousin was a fan and regularly won small bets in real life) and the American Civil War game, JOHNNY REB. Happy days indeed! |

was that ever released on the Spectrum? I only ever played the coin-op version...
<one quick internet search later> oh! it was... I thought it was like Bandersnatch, oft promised & never delivered vapourware... Last edited by Sensei Ping; 22-04-2012 at 12:53 AM. |

Been ages since I posted on here, but the 30th birthday of the glorious Speccy is enough.
Yes Mr. Bielby, I was one of your loyal readers. I've never really got over the fact that my subscription to YS ran out right before the last ever issue. And I still vaguely remember "Hold my hand (very tightly)". Games? For of-their-time technicality Robocop, Chase HQ and R-type. For the memories , who remembers the "Behind closed doors" adventures by Zenobi software? text based adventures about a Balrog who neeed to get into a locked toilet, off a toilet where he had been glued...I'm sure there were three and I can't remember the rest. Also, as Veela Magnet wrote, Head over Heels and the Dizzy games. |

I spent far too many hours/years playing on my speccy. I had a load of favourite games which have been mentioned within the top ten. My favourites were Rebelstar, starquake, firelord, elite, dizzy. Its amazing how little memory these games used considering what games are like today. Happy days. Thanks a million Sir Clive!

oh yeah. there was the neverending story that was Gauntlet. Play for hours/ days and never complete it. unless it crashed due to a screen overload.

Ah the good ol' ZX Spectrum with it's rubber keys and glossy black sheen. That is where I first fell in love with text adventure games now known as Interactive Fiction (IF).
Many, many days would be spent trying to escape from Espionage Island or try to navigate the time streams of Lords of Time. Where I first found the Boggit or got caught up trying to solve the Pawn. So many adventures over the years and none of those quests completed I fear. My fondest memory stays with me of Eureka produced, I think, by Ian Livingstone of Fighting Fantasy book fame. I believe the quest was split over five time periods and if you solved the quest you good win a great real life prize. Unfortunately I was never up for the task and after being trampled to death by dinosaurs or mauled by lions in ancient Rome I left the adventuring realms to gather dust. Happy but frustrating days. |

I never got on with text adventures - if the game didn't have exploding spaceships or weird aliens I wasn't interested

The Spectrum Text adventure game I loved was "Dungeon Master". Really simple and great fun. Even if you had no idea what the hell some if the weird assed potions you found were. I seem to remember one of them killed you outright, It may have been the eggy potion...
Anyway I loved it, and I think it may well have been written in BASIC. Happy days.
