until last year my son had very little real interest in any kind of reading and that bugged the hell out of me at his age i was introduced to 2000ad then starlord , tornado , speed , action , battle and i devoured them but my son does not read if he had a choice
Just before the summer holidays last year i convinced him to try the Harlem Heroes graphic novel and it opened his eyes a little ... since then he has gone through Rogue Trooper , Complete Ro Busters , Judge Dredd casefiles , Flesh ,Blackhawk , Stainless Steel rat and i have set him up with a monthy subscription to Wolverine V Deadpool .... so far so good But i would like him to read more books ... so i wondered about the books that hooked me and i remembered the Tripods and books by Nicholas Fisk called the Starstomrers and thats where my problem starts , Tripods is easy to find so no problem there On the other hand the first book of the starstomers is available from amazon for under 2 quid but the second book is hard to find and the best i can get is a copy for 18 pounds (20 with postage) the third is nowhere to be found and the 4th and 5th once again are in the sub 20 pound mark I have tried hay on wye , Libraries and ebay and these books seem to be nonexsistant so does anyone have any ideas on how to find cheap out of print hard to find books also can anyone suggest good easy to read books that suit a 10 - 12 year old and follow the 2000AD style of storytelling

If he enjoyed the 2000 AD version of the Stainless Steel Rat then the original Harry Harrison novels are probably worth a look.
Asimov's robot stories collected in I, Robot and The Rest of the Robots are similar in tone to the more amusing Future Shocks. At that age I enjoyed Jules Verne - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Two other authors that might appeal are Edgar Rice Burroughs and E. E. "Doc" Smith. Also, don't forget the Heinlein juveniles. I particularly recommend Time for the Stars. ** Just saw in another thread you already have the Stainless Steel Rat novels on your bookshelf. Nicholas Fisk is not a well known author, but I read a book by him 35 years or so ago that I really liked. Can't remember the title though...
I've had success finding hard-to-find SF/F books at www.abebooks.co.uk Check 'em out. Steve...

Did you ever read the Last Legionary series by Douglas Hill? I read those as a kid and loved them. They seem to be available reasonably on Amazon:

If he is a Doctor Who fan the old Target DW novelisations are a great start to reading. Most are about 126 pages.
Its a great way to be introduced to those stories with missing episodes - Abomnible Snowman, Web of Fear etc In fact, have not some been re-released recently. I remember seeing some in Waterstones.
