The Hunger Games - its a very mature YA book. It's all told in first person and Katniss us a very interesting narrator at once very hardy and closed off but also reminding us that she is still a kid placed in an obscene reality show. It's a very interesting world being built of twelve districts overruled by one massive Capitol - the Games are both entertainment and a political message as to how under it's control everyone is.

Slightly different and more interesting take on the Romance than the film took as well ...

Recently finished Heart Shaped Box and nearly finished Horns, both by Joe Hill. Finally got round to finishing Manhattan In Reverse by Peter F Hamilton - was a bit of a slog and being honest only enjoyed the 2 Paula Myo stories.

About to start Day Of Demons an anthology of nine horror stories set during one day involving demons, edited by Colin F Barnes.

Plague Town by Dana Fredsti. Pitched as Buffy meets The Walking Dead, it was clearly aimed specifically at me so obviously I had to give it a punt. So far it's certainly more Buffy than TWD, and more Buffy circa season 4 what with it being set on campus complete with soldiers and science lab...not necessarily a bad thing, Ashley's a fun ass-kicking protagonist with a good line in quips and extensive knowledge of pop culture but it's a little lighter and fluffier than I generally like my zombie stories. As it's meant to be first in a trilogy (ending with Plague Nation and Plague World) it will be interesting to see how the story and characters develop.

George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman. It's outside of what i'd normally read but i've been wanting to read this for a while. So far i'm enjoying it quite a lot.

Realised I'd not read a proper novel in a while, just non-fiction books, so gonna give The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break a go.

Careful Rodders,

I once read this and within a very short space of time found that I'd read all 13. I also once accidentally re-read the series entire (in their chronological order) a couple of years back. They really are books that you can go to again and again.

If I'm ever short of money or a book in my immediate sights and fancy a read a Flashman is always a good bet.

I was heartbroken when I learned of Fraser's passing and that the 14th book that he was working on would never be published.

They are amazing books, all of them. So detailed and immaculately researched. They also unflinchingly capture the mood and attitudes of the time.

Kevinj,

Understand that insults may not be your cup of tea but they are very much in the voice of the character (lifted from the bad guy in Tom Brown's school days), who is - by his own confession a cowardly and nasty piece of work. He (the character) is derogatory of nearly every place and culture that he travels to in the series of books but Fraser also balances this with fair and complimentary descriptions of the places themselves.

I would recommend any of the books, particularly the American trilogy or Flashman's Lady.
