Okay I should have started this last weekend but unfortunately work got in the way.
As a Kick off here's last weekends Cinema figures 1. Wolverine OPENER [4,099 Theaters] $87M 2. Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past OPENER [3,175] $15.3 3. Obsessed [2,514] WEEK 2, $12.2M Cume $47M 4. 17 Again [3,255] WEEK 3, $6.3M, Cume $48.4M 5. Monsters v Aliens WEEK 6, [2,626] $5.8M, Cume $182.4M 6. The Soloist [2,033] WEEK 2, $5.6M, Cume $18.1M 7. Earth [1,804] WEEK 2, $4.1M, Cume $21.8M 8. Fighting [2,312] WEEK 2, $4.1M, Cume $17.5M 9. Hannah Montana [2,819] WEEK 4, $4M, Cume $70.8M 10. State of Play [2,445] WEEK 3, $3.6M, Cume $30.8M At $87M Wolverine exceeded most peoples expectations (including Fox who as late as the weekend before dropped their expectation from $80M to $70M. At 4,099 theatres this was Fox's widest ever release and in addition a further 9,000 prints were spread across 101 other markets However Wolverine was down from last year when Iron Man debuted to $98.6M and the current record holder of Spiderman 3 which bowed this time in 2007 to $151M Opening with Wolverine was Ghosts of Girlfriends Past at $15.3M the film could hardly be decribed as counter programming (which worked out to excellent effect last year e.g. Dark Knight/Mamma Mia) but it is doing comparitvely well with "Maid of Honor" which opened the same week last year to $15M Monsters v Aliens is at #5, having been in the charts for 6 weeks and has now cumed $182M State of Play is at #10 and will be looking to foreign markets to earn its budget of $60M back Attention now turns to this weekend and Star Trek that opens tomorrow at 7pm. Fandango is reporting that 81% of its ticket sales are for Star Trek and over 100 theatres are reporting that they are completely sold out for all weekend showings Movietickets.com is reporting that for all Star Trek tickets being sold, 44% are for IMAX screenings. The film will bow on 134 IMAX screens in the US and 29 Internationally Last edited by Paulky; 02-05-2013 at 04:33 AM. Reason: Name change |

DaveC!
I have missed this thread and being given the chance to indulge my numbers nerdishness! Anyway - 44% on IMAX? That is extremely impressive, and I would imagine it looks awesome.

yay Dave C this thread is quickly becoming a sign summer is on the way
As I've said on the Wolverine Thread , Fox (and a lot of people including myself) probably thought the film was going to flop due to the damage caused by the leak....so it's success is a pleasant surprise ( and one of the few bad movies I will not begrudge success due to the fact it was the victim of a serious crime.) I think there is a good chance that STAR TREK is going to break box office records for May this weekend , so expect Wolverine to drop this week , some predictions up to a 60% drop in box office share , simply because Star Trek has in the last month has become a juggernaut that previous Treks could only dream of. However I believe with the current recession that Ironically this summer will be a big one for the film industry, expect records to be broken and films that in another year would not survive to do quite well..also be ready for some spectacular flops. |

Another yay to DaveC for this thread
The telling point with Wolverine is the next couple of weeks; will it float or sink like a stone?

Though I guess there'll still be a considerable number of people turning up at 7pm Saturday night expecting to get in, not knowing that the cinema is sold out for the whole weekend and will thus opt for another film so there'll be a bump there. It'll be interesting to so see if they'll go for Wolverine or Ghosts of Girlfriends past? |

The tracking services are claiming that Star Trek will only make about $50M this weekend (That's FSS Not TFSS) , not quite sure where they're getting that figure from as Paramount is expecting $60M whilst most rivals are predicting $65M. Tonight's showings are expected to earn about $5M in addition to the weekend figure
In the US, it will bow on 3,800 theatres, but will also debut this weekend in 54 other countries (China on May 15th, Japan May 29th and Mexico June 5th) The film isn't particularly doing well in the 18-25 demographic with only 20% saying they will definitely attend, and of the others only 30% claim to show some interest in the film. Hence why Paramount have been providing many pre-screenings and tonight's 7pm shows in the hope that word of mouth will encourage a largely apathetic majority to give the film a chance The film has been budgeted at $150M with a further $30M in promotional costs |

I know it probably won't bare much relation to the film's performance everywhere, but my cinema was packed this evening, and that was with hourly showings. Had to join a long queue at half 1 this afternoon when I went for the tickets, and everyone ahead of me was there for Star Trek (except one for Wolverine).

I don't know where they're getting to $50M figure. At my local cinema, every screen showing Star Trek (7 of them tonight, 5 for the rest of the weekend) is booked out solidly throughout |
