Recently, I are been mostly watchin....Jigoku Shoujo & Blood+.

plasticine punk 12-06-2006 12:45 AM

even though the I've had the VOl 1 DVD of Paranoia Agent in my hands for about 3 months, I've only just started watching it tonight.

V good but why do I get the feeling answers arent going to be forthcoming.

Next I may try Full Metal Alchemist and Elfin Lied. ONe question though why the hell is Anime so expensive in the UK.

If fans can do subs for nothing for the *coughs* internet versions then what on earth warrants such a high price. £20 for 4 episodes of FMA on Amazon.

FREEFALL 12-06-2006 02:10 AM

just finished watchig chobits disc 5 with one more to go. i must admit i thougt it would be about a boy and his robot but it had turned out to be a lot more meaningful that that

It's because anime is expensive to release in the UK, and the market is tiny compared to the US. Part of the reason we don't get many very long series released on DVD here (Manga are releasing Naruto Uncut from August, which I honestly never thought I'd see) is because as well as licensing costs, UK distributors have to pay for the material to be approved and assigned a certificate by the BBFC, who charge by the length of film they are presented with. This all adds up.

Distributors need to at least break even in order to continue releasing anime here, and because there's such a small market that means slapping a high price tag on the releases. If the market were to increase in size we might see a drop in the average price, but the first thing that needs to happen is for existing anime fans to support the industry instead of just downloading fansubs of licensed releases.

Look on the positive side, too: at least in the UK you're guaranteed 3-5 episodes of a TV series per DVD. A few volumes of Gantz were released in the US with only two episodes on them both (no change to the cost of the DVD), and I understand only a few episodes of Panda Z were released per DVD in the US - when you consider that Panda Z episodes are about five minutes long each, that's even worse (and the UK release is going to be much better value for money).

Plus, last time I was in HMV I saw something else on DVD that consisted of four episodes for £20 - its name was Doctor Who.

And wasn't the whole series something like £70 (RRP, mind) for a shelf-space-hogging box set of 13 episodes? That on top of the TV licence fee...

Yes but I wouldnt pay £20 for that. I'd wait for the boxset and get it for £39.99 from Play. Which is what I would do. And what I would happily do for a season of Naruto or FMA(are there seasons?)

Still the fact that Anime is actually getting a UK release is a good thing. Dont get me wrong, its just the fact I'm not wealthy enough to buy the complete series at the moment that irks me :(

I buy the vanilla Doctor Who DVD's from Asda. Only £11.97 each.

As far as buying Anime goes, I tend to buy the Japanese boxsets from ebay, unless I come across a good deal, such as Amazon knocking out Ghost in the Shell SAC: 1st GIG for only £29.99.

I recently picked up the complete series of Blue Gender for £20, and the full series of FMA for £25. They are proper official sets too, no bootlegs here.

For the love of god tell me where :)

ozman 12-06-2006 06:07 PM

Ebay.

Not sure what they've got now, but that's where I got mine. The seller I bought mine from ships them direct from Tokyo.

no thanks rather try Amazon or Play...

ands please give me the address for £25 FMA

Leah Holmes 12-06-2006 09:11 PM

Sorry ozman, but I find it very difficult to believe that a complete set of FMA, bought for £25 from eBay, is anything other than a bootleg, unless you've bought a raw Japanese version. Especially since we're only halfway through the series in the UK and the US won't have the complete series available until September.

Please don't encourage others to buy bootlegs on here.

ozman 12-06-2006 11:06 PM

What do you mean "raw" version? I already said in my last post that it comes from Tokyo, so obviously it's a Japanese DVD. And I'm a little annoyed that I'm being accused of encouraging others to buy bootlegs. I never told anyone to go and buy anything. I simply answered plasticine punk's question about where I got my set from.

And if this is a bootleg, then not only is it the most professionally made bootleg I've ever seen, but I'll also eat my hat.

A raw version is one in Japanese without subtitles. Your original post was ambiguous as to whether this was the case or not - just because your seller was based in Tokyo was no guarantee, in and of itself, that your set was not a bootleg.

Apologies for the offense, but please do appreciate that we need to keep a close eye on any possible illegal activity on here and actively discourage people from buying bootlegs.

Ok, I get what you mean. This version does have subtitles. I prefer my Anime to have the original Japanese dub with subtitles, and I'm impatient, which is why I tend to import rather that buy US/UK. Believe me, I wouldn't ever buy bootlegs myself, and I wouldn't have shelled out £25 for it if I wasn't sure it was legit.

I understand that, I just would have appreciated not being accused off the bat without being asked first. But fair play, I understand that you need to protect the forum. No harm done. :)

plasticine punk 12-06-2006 11:39 PM

thanks for answering anyway, I too thought it was either a raw version or a bootleg. I remember the Ghibli complete collection doing the rounds on Ebay a few years back had a few people shocked when they discovered it was a bootleg. Such was its quality.

I dont have a ebay account so its a moot point for me.

Actually play has vol 1 of FMA for £14.99 I think I'll try it from there.

Choo1701 13-06-2006 06:19 AM

Recently finished Rozen Maiden and am now onto Traumend. I've got a copy of .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet that I'll need to watch for review soon, too.

I also watched World of Narue recently. I would say that if you want to know what I thought of it, you'll have to wait for my review in the mag, but then someone might go and buy it...!

randomasduck 16-06-2006 04:35 PM

I think its korean- all it says on the disk is BIRZO Tor, lots of weird writing and 2004. friend brought it back from far east holiday- its a fast moving fansty and swordplay mini epic, with the lead character coming back from the dead to gain a place in in paradise. bloody weird at times.

FREEFALL 17-06-2006 10:21 PM

Karas, bit hard to explain the plot but buitiful to look at
read or die the series, and nene has just been kidnapped
Angelic Layer, i have no idea why...right now it has the emotional depth of beyblade

If you liked RM, you'll love Traumend. Though it does go a bit darker (and the later episodes are really emotional. Even a heartless child of illegitmate parents who couldn't show the slight bit of emotion about Grave of the Fireflies was left blubbing like a baby at one of the later episodes.)

But Rozen Maiden is definately love.

Yes, I was mistaken - ten was worse than nine. I've only got one episode left now...

Simon X 27-06-2006 09:44 AM

I was tempted to rewatch RM, but I realised I had other shows to catch up on, so tonight, I will mostly be watching NANA.

FREEFALL 12-07-2006 10:56 PM

Zalia Chimera 13-07-2006 12:56 PM

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
GetBackers
Ouran High School Host Club (absolutely hilarious!)
Gakuen Heaven (very sweet shounen ai series)

Kyou Kara Maoh
Gankutsuo
Bleach
Samurai Champloo
Clamp Campus Detective
Mirage of Blaze

FREEFALL 21-07-2006 08:48 AM

I've just finished watching Martian Successor Nadesico: The Motion Picture and i haven't felt this cheated in years

spoliers below

Akito was totally runied, turned into an amotionless slave.
the feisty captain spent most of the film chained to a wall and the ending. i know endings are surposed to be ambigious but akito just leaves. come on. fans of the series like myself who spent so long watching every episode and caring about an anime chracter, the first time since evangelion deserved a lot better

Leah Holmes 21-07-2006 08:57 AM

Recently started watching Ouran High School Host Club and I'm loving it to bits. It's like Utena with all the symbolism and angst surgically removed and replaced with all the camp bits of Fruits Basket.

FREEFALL 23-07-2006 02:00 PM
