I'm currently watching Martian Succesor Nadesico. It's rather good and funny. :D

Nadesico is absolutely fantastic (and scores the double bonus of having Spike Spencer dub a character which often parodies Shinji Ikari... marvellous!). It gets a little deep towards the end, but in a good way.

Just avoid the movie like the plaugue. ¬_¬

Canty 23-03-2006 10:45 PM

I adore Nadesico for all sorts of reasons, principally because it was a gateway for me back into anime, five or so years ago when it aired on the Sci-Fi Channel (UK). It's as enjoyable now that I'm an anime afficionado who recognizes the spoofs and parodies as it was when I knew relatively little... a high recommendation in my view. And unusually for a smirkily postmodern mecha show, it has moments of genuine drama, pathos and excitement alongside the hyper-referential comedy. For a newcomer to the medium, I'd put it ahead of Evangelion every time.

It also has the best ever episode titles. How could you refuse to watch a show with such titles as "Sort of Like A Fateful Decision", "The Dangers of Femininity", "Finding Yourself in a Routine Plot" or "Let's Go With Hot-Blooded Anime!" ?

And Ryoko, Hikaru and Izumi are the best trio of female mecha pilots ever.

Absolutely -- but let us not forget the awesome machismo that was GAI DAIGOJI! After King Totoro he's probably my favourite anime character of all time... a anime character who thinks he's, uh, *another* anime character from the anime within the anime (gah, my head hurts!).

"AARRRGGGHHHHHH!! CROOOOSSSS CRAAAASSSSH!!!!"

:D :D :D

I'd put it ahead for anyone. When the Sci-Fi Channel was showing both I watched Evangelion because everyone said it was superb and classic and I had to watch it (and after seeing the final episode I hunted them all down and killed them slowly) but I watched Nadesico because I loved it and it made me laugh like a drain.

FREEFALL 31-03-2006 04:45 PM

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds is what i have just seen and thought it was marvellous and so ahead of it's time for an anime created in the 1980's and tonight i'm going to kick back with My Neighbour Tontoro. well tell all about that later

ozman 31-03-2006 05:04 PM

Currently watching Full Metal Alchemist and Wolfs Rain courtesy of Rapture TV. I thought FMA was pretty good, but wasn't so impressed by Wolfs Rain. Still, I'll give it a few more episodes before I decide properly.

Last film I watched was Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Simon X 31-03-2006 08:04 PM

I just watched an entire series of Rozen Maiden and am now making my way through the second series, Rozen Maiden: Träumend.

Nilhuanwen 04-04-2006 08:54 AM

My boyfriend and I have just started watching Full Metal Alchemist too. Only seen two episodes so far, but I'm liking the look of it. Eager to see more :)

FREEFALL 05-04-2006 02:42 AM

I think I lasted two episodes before I realised it Wolf's Rain was pretty but dull. Didn't waste any more time.

Full Metal Alchemist on the other hand is great.

I saw my second episode of FMA last night, and it was a lot better than the first one I saw, So I think I'll be sticking with it.

I got the DVD of Appleseed today, so that will be being watched in a couple of hours. :D

The Baron (and Muta) have walk-ons in Whisper of the Heart, which is sort of an origin story. If that helps. Don't expect more of the same though, but it is a lovely film.

I lasted 2 episodes too, but then decided I couldn't stand any more boring furry fantasy fodder....

Leah Holmes 05-04-2006 01:19 PM

I have the first volumes of Tenjho Tenge, Gilamesh and Yukikaze to watch, as well as Spirit of Wonder. All of these are for review. And I got my preview disc of Advent Children today too. I've got a busy weekend ahead of me...

All that and I still have episodes of Mushishi and Black Cat to catch up on...

Simon X 05-04-2006 02:17 PM

I have 4 episodes of Rozen Maiden: Träumend left to watch, but I have also been rewatching Airmaster.

adam.creighton 05-04-2006 04:04 PM

wayne 16-04-2006 10:21 AM

just finished watching vol 1 of yukikaze and full metal alchemist, yukikaze was a big let down, really dull, watch macross plus instead its miles better, alchemist was better, first two episodes were so so but the other two were quite good, i hear it gets better so may stick with it.

Choo1701 18-04-2006 01:29 PM

FLCL (bits of)

wacky FUN!!!! :D :D :D

Canty 18-04-2006 10:30 PM

Oh man... I swear I'll start the FLCL thread soon, so we can talk about how great it is. Haterz will not be welcome!

I'm watching s-CRY-ed. It's an interesting series about offshoot humans with weird powers, ranging from the hero who has a super punch, up to some guy who controls watermelons (just go with it! This is why shows like Mutant X will always suck in comparison!). The animation's of varying quality but there are some intriguing effects such as deliberate use of blurring and lensflare during flashback scenes; the story is engaging with enough mystery and character, I hope, to sustain it over the 26-episode run. Plus it has my new number one favourite anime character, Mr Radical Goodspeed himself, Straight Cougar (that's him on the left).
