Evening,

Has anyone seen Serial Experiments Lian?? Its prety cool but quit... not scary, but more unsettling to watch.
Yes, I've seen the first few episodes. It is a very odd series, but surreal in a good way. I have heard it described as being "weird for the sake of weird" but it looks like its got some interesting concepts in there. The 'Wired' is an especially intriguing view on 'society'.

I'm in the process of watching 'Cowboy Bebop' - for the first time, yeah, I'm new to the anime thing so have *much* to catch up on.

(Including, if you'd agree with a friend of mine...CLAMP manga. The look on her face when I told her I hadn't read any:  )

I'm determined to cover everything we can though, simply because anime is no less worthy of coverage than films, DVDs or books, so there'll be a lot of website-exclusive reviews coming up...
Sounds like a fine idea to me. Though, I'm just glad anime got a section to itself at all. I'm relatively new to it, and the reviews seem to give a good selection of what's available overall (SF/Fantasy-wise), rather then the general DVD section picking out the odd anime film or two.

Any possibilities of manga reviews? Just wondering...

Glad you find the anime section useful - it is very much my baby so it's always good to hear that people appreciate its existence! We do cover manga on the anime page occasionally (we did the re-release of Ghost in the Shell last year and covered Junko Mizuno's Pure Trance a few months back) but anime releases do take precedence, so it doesn't happen that often. The comics section also fills up with other stuff fairly quickly. It'd be great to cover more manga though; it's something I'd have to investigate for practicality.

*nods* Makes sense. Thanks for the reply. :)

FREEFALL 21-02-2006 08:56 AM

just finished watching Angelic Layer, it's your basic figihing machine game similer to bayblade and set in the same universe as chobits. nothing original but not bad...sometiomes they seem to be going in the same style of excel saga. so it's not all bad

Leah Holmes 21-02-2006 09:38 AM

Hehe, I'm not the only one who watched Angelic Layer and wanted to go buy all the parts and make an Angel of their own, am I?

Simon X 21-02-2006 09:45 AM

I read the Angelic Layer manga... and I can't say I was impressed at all. But then again, that sort of stuff [CLAMP] isn't my thing.

To be fair, after reading Appleseed all I wanted to do was build myself a LandMate.

The_End 23-02-2006 05:10 PM

Well, I'm giving 'Full Metal Alchemist'' a go, but I'm not sure what to make of it yet. Hmmm.

I also had a peek at ''Elfen Lies'' and all I have to say is ''WTF!’’ I watched episode seven so I have no idea what’s going on but from what I have seen it's crazy (in a good way). It was the sub-titled version and it looked amazing! I might go buy me the first volume! Very gory which was great and yet it has this cuteness about it – very surreal!

I was a bit indifferent about FMA when I started watching it too, but then I watched episode 7 and have been pretty hooked ever since!

It's really got its claws into me now too... aaargh....

FlamesOfFury 23-02-2006 10:15 PM

It does just that FMA does. :D

Bear 23-02-2006 11:26 PM

I'm a sucker for mecha - Zoids Genesis and Turn A Gundam are good shows. So far.
ZG is very generic, but good fun in an uncomplicated way. Turn A Gundam is bonkers - Gundam franchise goes 1920s America. Good in a Laputa kinda way.

It's murder on the pocket though, since I didn't bother to tape the earlier ones on Rapture and now have to watch them again!!!

Aaaargh!

Still, I'm enjoying them too much to complain. :D

Agent_grey 27-02-2006 10:13 PM

Having spent far too much on stuff since ayacon and a little before that I have be relegated to not getting new stuffs : (

So instead I aim to actually finish buying Series instead of getting the new things in too.

So new DVDs that I'm still trying to fight my way through are:

Last Exile
Chrono Crusade
Gundam Seed
Rahxephon
Yu yu Hakusho (come on MVM :( )
FMA (I'm getting the US stuff for the luverly tins :D )
and Get backers.

Ok some of them arent new but thats whats on my plate for now, as for the non dvd scene, then we's be talking:

One Piece (Japanese version)
Naruto (well...once the filler stops)
Yakitate Japan! (ANIME ABOUT BREAD SHOULD NOT BE THIS INTERESTING!)
Zoids Genisis
and my favourite Eyeshield 21

Also Turn A is indeed the awesome, although I wish they would stop calling it 'The White Mustachioed doll!'
That is the most un-heroic name ever...

FREEFALL 01-03-2006 08:13 AM

I've just finishing watching Samurai Champaloo, i got the first episode free in dvd monthy and because of it have just rented the first actual disc from screen-select. i thought it was brillent

Canty 01-03-2006 02:29 PM

Samurai Champloo certainly is terrific, and one of those rare anime that, after watching it, you feel like recommending to everyone. The first disc didn't grab me for some reason, but the second has some roll-on-the-floor laughing moments that made me view the show in a different light; so much that I'm now intending to buy the whole series.

The sneaky thing about Champloo is that the anachronistic elements are so brazen (hip-hop lovin', RayBan wearing yakuza in 17th century Japan) that the genuine insights into Japanese history and culture almost pass you by, borne on a tide of great dialogue, wicked fight scenes and farcical comedy. What other show would open an episode with a discourse on Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin's failed attempt to found an artist's commune in Italy, and have it wind up being relevant to the plot?

Maxarodenfoe 06-03-2006 03:21 PM

i just started watching Chobits and Serial Experiments Lain both are awesome. for very very diffrent reasons. Chobits for what i've seen of the first volume is hillarious. and Serial Experiments Lain is just amazing. first off the themetune is awsome. then it's so bewildering and confusing. the story is so griping.

Pope Gordy 09-03-2006 11:14 PM

Akira: still the best.

umopapisdn 10-03-2006 08:17 AM

Not actually watching, but I've taken my first steps into the world of manga - I'm now looking nervously at it, wondering which end to start reading from....

lol, I was like that when I started reading manga.

I'm currently starting watching Beyblade G Revolution again... say what you like. I like it a lot :)

wayne 13-03-2006 04:59 PM

just finished watching howls moving castle, it was very good but i kept getting annoyed by the multi angle icon on the screen, cant seem to get rid of it,any help would be great.

Canty 13-03-2006 06:33 PM

That seems to be a problem with all of the Optimum Ghibli discs; so far I've noticed it on both Nausicaa and Spirited Away. No tips on getting rid, I'm afraid.

I have to say that even this nuisance couldn't diminish the pleasure of these two films for me. Wonderful, heroic film-making.

That's strange, I didn't get that at all on my DVD.

Although the control pad on my PS2 did go a bit shonky towards the end and spontaneously flipped languages! That was annoying...

adam.creighton 13-03-2006 09:34 PM

I just hit the OSD button till it disappeared.

FlamesOfFury 15-03-2006 11:45 AM

Bleach, all the way though again...

And I'm working my way through them sets I got from The Works. Didn't really like Oh My Goddess! :?

I hope to get Howl's Moving Castle soon after reading the review it got this issue.

Leah Holmes 15-03-2006 01:09 PM

I recently watched the first episode of Shinigami no Ballad on the basis that I saw a promotional image that had a cat with wings in it.

Yep, tell me there's a cat in it and I'll watch it.

Anyway. The plot basically seems to be cute-but-angsty death goddess wanders around with her demon cat and does the whole death god thing. The story in the first episode involved an abandoned kitten and almost made me cry my eyes out. Seriously, I was sat poised to turn it off the moment something bad happened to the kitten for the whole thing. Plus, although the angst isn't quite on the ship-sinking level of, say, Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, it's still pretty annoying. Not watching that again.

I'm still watching Bleach, Mushishi and Black Cat, otherwise.

adam.creighton 18-03-2006 07:02 PM

'My Neighbour Totoro'. Brilliant, brilliant film. Cat bus!!! :D

Totoro merchandise! There is a God

Malatac 18-03-2006 09:29 PM

Just watched Howl's moving castle and it's amazing, although I do prefer Spirited away.

I am also making my way through Chobits and Escaflowne, both of which have completely captured my imagination. Can't wait for the final disc of Chobits to be released.

adam.creighton 18-03-2006 09:35 PM

Hopefully Neon Genesis Evangelion will be with me next week.

FREEFALL 18-03-2006 09:52 PM

my latest one is called Aquarian Age: Sign For Evolution, it apparently based on a trading card game in japan and appears to be about a rock band trying to make it big justerposed with a battle between diminsions taking place on earth, it's ok but i'm watching it, but not enjoying it. i think all this anime is spoiling me, back when i was young i was so grateful for anything it was automitically good!

Canty 19-03-2006 10:23 AM

I just rented the first volume of Burst Angel... a girls, guns'n'mecha anime so relentlessly generic it couldn't possibly be parodied. The animation was OK but the plots and dialogue were so hackneyed that even though they provided a semi-decent English dub, I was forced to watch the J-language track to spare my ears from the force of cliche. Think I'll stick with Planetes.

You should see some of the stuff I have. 3 plush Totoros of different sizes, a catbus statue, 2 susuwatari (one of the Totoro ones and a Spirited Away one), a Porco Rosso model, a (as yet unassembled) Laputa Ornithoptor vinyl kit among other things. It's amazing what you can find if you shop about a bit.

WANT!!!

Me and a mate were trying to describe them to another mate who's not seen the movie - "well, think of the front end of a Ford Model T stuck on a jetski with dragonfly wings". We had to stop; he was backing away so fast he'd've gone out of the window any second.

adam.creighton 19-03-2006 11:15 PM

Totoro plushes!!! :D

Niallo 23-03-2006 05:24 AM
