Dunno, I caught the Cat Returns as well, and wasn't overly impressed with it. The Cat King was pretty funny though. :)

currently watching a couple episodes of Speed Grapher. Tis good so far shows promise.

And I've watched far too many episode of Samurai Champloo recently.

AzraelX 27-02-2007 11:41 PM

Samurai Champloo is great, I got addicted to that over summer.
I haven't seen Speed Grapher, I'm still distraught that they changed the theme tune from Duran Duran :( (Unless I've got the wrong anime..too lazy to check atm:P)

I think so.. as i understand it, the company weren't able to get the rights for the song when distributing the series outside japan.

I've got Coyote Ragtime to review this month. I've already watched the first episode and I really liked it so I'm hoping the rest of the DVD proves to be more of the same...

I saw a clip that caught my interest, including the gothic-lolita style android assasins, and the main characetr who looks to be well into his middle ages makes a nice change (plus I love the fact he has so many alias's people just call him 'mister').

Naming the 'sisters' afters months of yeah made me remember Sol Bianca... Maybe that should be the next 'old classic' I dig out for a friend

Hugh K.David 01-03-2007 02:57 PM

If nobody minds me adding to this...

Current favourite in the ADV London office is, funnily enough, Coyote Ragtime Show, given most of those with a Commonwealth background (it's a fairly international office, we have staff from Austria, Germany, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa and Japan here) grew up with Manga Ents titles. Our more discerning International Production Coordinator thinks it's rubbish, however... she really likes Guyver, as does our new Web Marketing Coordinator, who's also an old-school anime fan.

Me personally, I'm gagging for the next disc from the US office of Le Chevalier D'Eon, which pushes all the right buttons with me: European period drama, CG backgrounds, political and religious conspiracies, real-life people fictionalised as characters, supernatural horror, and terrific swordplay.

On Leah's recommendation I'm going to look properly at Monster, since we have the French edition in the office (present from a French licensing partner).

I dare you to watch the whole thing by Minami! :P

Perf 01-03-2007 09:10 PM

More Samurai Champloo, I'm rapidly running out of episodes.

Sigil 02-03-2007 11:42 PM

Fruits basket and Full metal alchemist. I borrowed them both XD Stuff I didn't borrow that I'm watching is Eureka seven and ghost in the shell stand alone complex second gig.

Fruits basket is the best YAY.

Hugh anything new for fruits basket coming out? I mean anything

FREEFALL 03-03-2007 09:47 AM

just watched disc 2 of yugo the negotater, highly recommended

JonLaidlow 04-03-2007 12:41 PM

Just watched disc 2 of Witch Hunter Robin - normally I hate series with a run of standalone episodes at the beginning before they think about an arc, but this is just looks cool and feels like fun. Very glad I bought the super-cheap collection from the USA as I have the remaining six discs to sit through.

Watched the first half of ep 1 of Coyote Ragtime Show on the free disc that comes with Newtype USA but just couldn't get past the whole imitation-Cowboy Bebop style of it. Maybe I'm getting old (33!), grumble...

I just read Leah's review of Negima in this month's SFX and I'm so glad I'm not the only one who was horrified by it. It's the first anime to ever make me feel dirty - the blatant sexualising of under-16 girls (I couldn't work out how old they were meant to be) and a 10 year old boy was just too creepy for me to continue after the first episode, and yet nobody else seems bothered by it. At least in Love Hina they were trying to get into college!

Hugh K.David 05-03-2007 04:12 PM

Leah: 11 days, 15 episodes, will have a go!

Sigil: absolutely nothing I've heard of after FUNImation's box set the other month. If I hear something I'll let you know.

Jon: Witch Hunter Robin is top staff, very classy. If you like it you should check out Ergo Proxy, which shares a number of key creative staff with WHR. Shame about CRS for you, but it's working here - Chris our Customer Services guy said "Watching it felt like the first time I watched anime all over again." I think its style & content predate Bebop, reminding me in particular of an 80s fave of mine, Space Adventure Cobra. Fair dos to you though, it definitely isn't going to work for some, I'm sure.

And you're not wrong about Negima either... what you're saying has a lot to do with why we thought twice about releasing Maburaho here.

JonLaidlow 05-03-2007 05:40 PM

I'm sort of tempted by Coyote Ragtime because of all the good press. I guess I should try watching to the end of the first episode! Maybe i was having a bad day.

Now watched Witch Hunter Robin disc 3 (eps 11-14). Woah. That was fantastic! I knew it was building up to some kind of schism between Robin and the organisation she works for, but it was done with such style! It's one of the most artistic shows I've watched in ages, and I just expected a good mystical action series, not Lain!

Damn, oh well I'll look for some fruits basket merchandise to tide me over and buy some replica gunblades from FF8 XD

I like Ergo proxy and witch hunter robin from what I've seen^^ Very good but not seen too much of them yet.

Thanks for responding Hugh.

Really your so bothered about Negima? I think maybe it should be banned or something in England but the manga shows even more XD It's just anime not real life but maybe a bit of a culture clash still.

FREEFALL 06-03-2007 07:13 AM

Whats FLCL?

just watched paranioa agent disc one and 2, not bad. and the new fist of the north star. yep mindless violence at it's greatest.

also the new series Jinki, not bad...the mother is such a bitch but i'm betting she will grow a heart before the series is over

Leah Holmes 09-03-2007 03:57 PM

FLCL, or FuriKuri (or "Fooly Cooly", but I hate that name).

I actually wasn't that fussed on FLCL, for some reason.

bookworm192398 09-03-2007 05:44 PM

I watched it with a group of friends. Roughly every five minutes someone yelled "WHAT THE F***?!".
I'm still not sure what my opinion on it is, though I do think it has a great soundtrack.

I've recently started watching The Vision of Escaflowne and Scrapped Princess. Both look intriguing.

Nimue 09-03-2007 06:28 PM

I've heard good things about Scrapped Princess. Wish I could get my hands on it.

I watched FLCL all in one night. It was...bizarre. I think I'd enjoy it more if I had time to go through the episodes again....just not all at once.

I'm watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It is brilliant. Very, very funny and clever. I finished Loveless the other night, and it was rather strange and a little disturbing.

xjohnx 10-03-2007 01:57 AM

The excellent Death Note, the movies aren't to bad either.

Mr Blister 13-03-2007 12:10 PM

Watched the last volume of Chrono Crusade. A very satisfying conclusion to a great series, I really enjoyed it. Though it left me vaguely depressed for a while afterwards. :P

SuperHiro 13-03-2007 07:45 PM

I'm currently in the middle of Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu and have just finished Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki.

Being something of an Anime virgin, I'm not sure what to try next. :?

Draven 13-03-2007 09:53 PM

Robotech : The Macross Saga, just watched Episode 1 - Boobytrap and Episode 2 - Countdown. Away to watch some more tonight, I haven't watched it in years, and I don't think I have seen it in order. It is really good although I keep thinking of Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds when I here some of the voices, Widimer from Dogtanian is in there for sure. :D

Anyway, the 1st episode seemed to cut to the chase very fast and moved on at a fair lick...thought the story of fixing the spacecraft could have lasted 2 or 3 episodes (I guess it was to get some action in there ASAP). However its still very good, I'm not sure why the 3 main tactical officers (if thats what their title is) are females, seems sexist (but nevermind). Well 2 down, 34 eps to go.

Macross loves its 'bridge bunnies'. And, well, women generally have better multitasking capabilities than men, which seems like qualities you'd want on the command deck of a high tech space fortress.

More 'the men go and fight the enemies the women have told them where they are, otherwise the poor little lambs would be going the wrong way due to their refusal to read a map'

Colbell: save your pennies and get the new, improved Guyver we're releasing in June - the most complete adaptation of the manga yet. I think you might just like it.

bookworm 192398: FLCL is pretty weird, although the anime's definitely nuttier than the manga, which is why we chose not to option it back in 2003, too much of a risk here in the UK. However, it's still a lot of fun. However, if you're watching Escaflowne, then all I can say is I hope you enjoy it, I love it to bits, still in my personal all-time anime top ten, gorgeous fantasy show.

Freefall: Glad to see you're enjoying Jinki and New Fist, I like both myself, it's been fun seeing people respond to our releases like that. I'm really hoping that we're in the running for the follow-up New Fist films being worked on in Japan now.

xjohnx: Death Note is SO good, one of the best manga I've ever read. Got the recent r3 DVD of the live-action Death Note part 1, can't wait to sit down and watch it.

Mr. Blister: Another Chrono fan! Great series, great manga too - if the ending of the anime left you depressed, then read the manga - very different ending.

SuperHiro: Um, if you like Fumoffu and Tenchi it sounds like you're enjoying rom-coms with action and comedy - there are a lot of shows out there like that, but less of them on DVD in the UK. I'd reckon trying out the original Full Metal Panic! if you haven't already, and maybe Mahoromatic. Definitely Azumanga Daioh.

Oh don't worry, I'm getting saved up nicely for it! I've got the original 12 ep series on VHS and a few Manga issues of it as well, so giant planet destroying robots can't stop me from purchasing it :D

Colbell: excellent, that's one guaranteed sale in the can :)

SuperHiro 15-03-2007 07:56 PM

Thanks Hugh, I'll check all of those out. :D

JonLaidlow 15-03-2007 09:39 PM

Finished Witch Hunter Robin now - that was fantastic. I only wish they'd gone into the whole backstory of the Solomon organisation in the same way that Noir explained the Soldats.

So now I've just picked up the Nadesico movie from the HMV website (7.99! Going out of print, allegedly!) so I re-watched Nadesico disc 1 to try to remember all the characters. I'd forgotten how good Nadesico is! I want to be called Gai Daigoji and watch cheesy Mazinger rip-offs all day....

So then, before I got to the Nadesico movie, but after disc 1, I found that I'd only watched half of disc 4 of the American ADV release of GATCHAMAN (aka Battle of the planets) and I watched a fantastic episode where Gatchaman disobeys Dr Nanbu's orders and goes up against Zoltar-sorry-Berg Katse only to get his arse kicked and the Phoenix trashed. Truly Gatchaman has the best opening and closing themes of any classic anime out there - i've been humming them all day. Plus, you've got to love a show where someone called Ken (a friendly, unassuming name, if ever there was one) is the hardest bastard out there.

Next up - disc 2 of Planetes, more Nadesico, more Gatchaman, and then I've bought the last 2 discs of Paranoia Agent but I think I'll have to watch the beginning again...
