The bulk of the story in the first 25 or so episodes of the original FMA are retold in the first 11 or so episodes (at a very fast pace) of Brotherhood as well as having some original plot points. Once the plots diverge though it's like a different series, most of the characters act the same and there are some very notable new ones. The events are very different too.
I think seeing the original at the more leisurely pace help you enjoy (make more sense of) those early Brotherhood episodes.
A good example is the events of episode 9 (the one in the mining town) in the original anime are not retold in Brotherhood but are stated as having happened (mostly) they way it happened in the original. The events in Liore/Lior/Reole are cut down to a single episode too.
I can see a super special edition coming out in a few years with all the slower paced events from the original cut into the appropriate place in Brotherhood making an 80ish episode ultimate series. |
