From Star Trek to Twitter - SFX reader Jamie Starbuck reveals why he's following Wil Wheaton online:
Think back to when you were at school. Did you ever have the idle daydream: what will Karen Matthews be like in ten or 20 years time? Always assuming you knew a Karen Matthews, obviously. I used to play the game all the time and now, over 15 years later I can say, hand on heart, I got it all completely wrong.
Except in one instance. I had the fortune to grow up with Star Trek TNG and DS9, and felt Wesley Crusher and Jake Sisko were my contemporaries. I was a young man growing into adulthood and they were off fighting wars in space, but we had similar issues. Unfortunately, while they were there for us young 'uns to empathise with, everyone knows they were just annoying whiny oiks. Very much like me then.
So I played the game. Jake "Cirroc Lofton" Sisko - he's the better of the two by far. He's a far more interesting character than Crusher and a better actor than Wheaton. He's gonna go far I said. In 2005 he was due to release a rap CD which still hasn't appeared and his biography says little else. Where are you Cirroc? Come back to the SF fold.
Wesley "Wil Wheaton" Crusher, I actually quite liked. He reminded me of me - the nerd always trying to please. But, and I don't think I'm saying anything no-one else hasn't thought, my word he was smug. The days I spent praying for someone to bring him down a peg or five. Or to give him lessons on how to remove that one same expression he had. I said to myself, in the future he's got to exceed my very low expectations because let's face it, he isn't going to get a job after this. I felt quite sorry for him. Let's blame the writers of TNG.
And I was right. But anyone worth a grain of sugar follows him on Twitter as @wilw and his great blog http://wilwheaton.typepad.com. Wil chats about SF and not a lot else. See, Wil's a geek just like me and you. He embraces geekdom with both hands and feet (he must be both immensely ashamed and superbly smug that he got to be Wesley Crusher). He's a great writer too and makes for a very interesting read. So, quality on all fronts. Except he got to watch a preview screening of Watchmen the other day so I can still justifiably hate him. There's no geek like a jealous geek.
Are you following any sci-fi celebs on Twitter, Facebook or via their own websites? Do you agree that Wheaton is one of the most interesting bloggers? Let us know in the comment threads below (and remember that you can follow SFX on Twitter too).

Good job!
Funny thing, my Wil love: I hated Wes. But oh how I LOVE Wil. Ah, irony.

This is why I chose Wil as my first blog entry. I may have a little man crush.
