VOTE Your favourite Superheroes
|
Time for another SFX vote-storm. Simple question: who are your favourite superheroes? Results to be announced in an upcoming super secret SFX project (though some of you may have spotted a pattern, and will be able to work out what that is. The rules: 1) We want you to vote for your top three superheroes of all time. We'll then award three points to your number one vote, two to your second and one to your third. 2) Which superheroes are eligible? You decide. Trying to define what a superhero is always leads to arguments (some people will still swear blind that Batman isn’t one because he has no superpowers, or Flash Gordon is because he started in comics). But we tend to find these polls are self-regulating: the more eligible candidates get more votes and the dafter suggestions don't. So waste a vote trying to get Doctor Who into the final countdown if you really want to, but it'll be a wasted vote. We'd rather you voted sensibly, so your votes count. 3) To register your votes either: • Post them in this thread on the SFX forum |

Superman- the first, the greatest, the noblest, God-like. We can never be him, but it would be cool if we were. Who wouldn't want to be able to fly and have X-ray vision?
Third place is a tough one. But I'll go for Mr Fantastic- For his intellect and because he's married to Susan Richards. Who hasn't wondered about the sex lives of these 2? oh, just me again then.

a) He is a comic creation existing in the same continuum as Batman and Superman AND...
b) He has a near-godlike, certainly super set of powers so I think those justify a place on this list.
More than that however, he is a truly believable character (despite being the personification of the essential universal force of Dreaming) at times stubborn and heartbroken and selfish and his story such a vast and complex tragedy that he must surely be one of the most developed characters in DC continuity.
2) John Constantine - Because he doesn't use his "super power" cheaply. The "magic" is never a get out of jail free card and Warren Ellis writes some of the best storylines that suggest that the super power is non-existent. It's a mark of how interesting and multifaceted the hero is where you can remove that killer app and still be left with a bloke you'd like to meet down the pub.
3) The Incredible Hulk - Especially the Ultimate version by Mark Millar which makes Bruce Banner into a monster in himself; a creepy little man suppressing all his hideous neuroses into his walking, smashing id. Everyone has those dark thoughts and who hasn't wanted to occasionally wish I could "hulk-out" and manifest them like Banner.

2. Animal Man - Astounding work by Grant Morrison in the 80s.
3. Spider-Man - the first truly troubled superhero, and he's a geek, to boot! Top-notch stories include my personal favourite: Kraven's Last Hunt
As much as I enjoy a good superhero tale, however, with the exception of Daredevil, it's the creative team I follow, not the character. A good writer/artist combo will make a third-rate character readable. A bad writer will turn a hero into a zero.

Superman. Yes, he has the powers that everyone wants, and is the epitome of the superhero, but forget that he's from an alien world and near godlike. Superman shows more nobility and greater humanity than any native of the planet Earth. Yes, he was born Kal El, last son of Krypton, but it's humanity that defines him. Superman could have made himself ruler of the world with his powers. Instead, he chooses to help others just cause its the right thing to do.
Spider-Man. He's got amazing powers, a brilliant mind and a razor-sharp wit. He's fought The Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom, Kraven and Carnage and he can't even get the rent payed on time. Spidey's just an ordinary kid living an extraordinary life and more often than not, he doesn't even like it that much. You might aspire to be Superman or Batman, but if you got super powers tomorrow, Spidey's the guy you'd most be like.
Yeah, it's an obvious top three, but c'mon - they're the top three superheroes for a damn good reason.

1. Batman - particularly when written by Morrison, but the guy's determination, foresight and willingness to do what's right regardless just make him the best.
2. Spider-man - not kept up to date with him, but he was such a childhood favourite he has to be in here. In part, though, this is a vote for the original Spider-man 2099, who just revitalised the whole webspinning, wise-cracking gig.
3. Now the toughest decision. Could be Hellboy, could be Tom Strong, could be the Great Machine. But no, it's got to be Jack Knight - Starman. The first superhero to really make you believe he was a person, and what a person he was.

You said:
"Oh please, it already says in the initial post that characters like The Doctor don't really count, so I fail to see how someone like 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' qualifies."
I say:
Buffy is not the Doctor. She is completely different. She is a human being who's been given superpowers to fight monsters and bad guys. She is NOT mentioned in the original post as not being eligible. Until told otherwise by SFX I'd assume that she is. If they specifically meant only costumed crime fighters then they should have been more specific.
You said:
"Really though, out of 70 odd years worth of fiction and people are actually voting for Buffy The Vampire Slayer?"
I say:
People are voting for Buffy (like me) because we love her and her ongoing adventures. Just the same as people have voted for all the other superheroes on here. Personally, I don't care for a lot of the heroes that have been nominated but I'm not gonna denigrate them like you have done to Buffy. That would be disrespectful. People love what they love for their own reasons.

2) CAPTAIN MARVEL (Billy Batson), the "real one", published by DC Comics (NOT the "carbon copy" from Marvel)!
3) BATMAN (Bruce Wayne), especially the 40s & 70s versions
btw: a lot of people list "Buffy" in this thread, but Buffy is NO SUPER-HERO! (would be like someone list "Samantha" from BEWITCHED or "Catweazel", sorry)

1. Batman: lots of story arcs involving intriguing aspects to Batman's mind and his effect on Gotham.
2. Deadpool: just very interesting and amusing stories.
3. Spider Jerusalem: Ok, so you can almost transliterate some Hunter S Thompson tropes into Spider's environment, but there's plenty of originality in Warren Ellis's stories that they're still interesting, amusing and great fun. And even for the bits that are clearly "inspired" by HST, they're still amusing regardless.

3. Spider-man
(all of whom obtained their powers or were born with them *which none of my choices were* and aren't just humans with gadgets aka Batman, The Watchmen excluding Dr Manhatten, Iron Man etc. as they are just heroes in society)
If I could've chosen more I would've put Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, The Thing, any X-Man and a few others. I guess I would include Buffy as she had the power of a Slayer which she got after the previous one died and didn't use gadgets per say.
