VOTE Your favourite Superheroes

Time for another SFX vote-storm.

Simple question: who are your favourite superheroes?

Results to be announced in an upcoming super secret SFX project (though some of you may have spotted a pattern, and will be able to work out what that is.

The rules:

1) We want you to vote for your top three superheroes of all time. We'll then award three points to your number one vote, two to your second and one to your third.

2) Which superheroes are eligible? You decide. Trying to define what a superhero is always leads to arguments (some people will still swear blind that Batman isn’t one because he has no superpowers, or Flash Gordon is because he started in comics). But we tend to find these polls are self-regulating: the more eligible candidates get more votes and the dafter suggestions don't. So waste a vote trying to get Doctor Who into the final countdown if you really want to, but it'll be a wasted vote. We'd rather you voted sensibly, so your votes count.

3) To register your votes either:

• Post them in this thread on the SFX forum
• Post them in the comments section at the bottom of this story
• Email them to sfx@futurenet.co.uk (with superhero in the subject line please)

Batman- because he has no powers, he has a dark side, is mean and cool and flawed. We can all aspire to be like him. Who hasn't had the urge to dress up as a bat and beat the crap out of a bunch of bullies or vandals? Oh, just me then.

Superman- the first, the greatest, the noblest, God-like. We can never be him, but it would be cool if we were. Who wouldn't want to be able to fly and have X-ray vision?

Third place is a tough one. But I'll go for Mr Fantastic- For his intellect and because he's married to Susan Richards. Who hasn't wondered about the sex lives of these 2? oh, just me again then.

1) Dream/Morpheus/The Sandman - Okay, perhaps stretching the limitations of what you call a superhero but
a) He is a comic creation existing in the same continuum as Batman and Superman AND...
b) He has a near-godlike, certainly super set of powers so I think those justify a place on this list.
More than that however, he is a truly believable character (despite being the personification of the essential universal force of Dreaming) at times stubborn and heartbroken and selfish and his story such a vast and complex tragedy that he must surely be one of the most developed characters in DC continuity.

2) John Constantine - Because he doesn't use his "super power" cheaply. The "magic" is never a get out of jail free card and Warren Ellis writes some of the best storylines that suggest that the super power is non-existent. It's a mark of how interesting and multifaceted the hero is where you can remove that killer app and still be left with a bloke you'd like to meet down the pub.

3) The Incredible Hulk - Especially the Ultimate version by Mark Millar which makes Bruce Banner into a monster in himself; a creepy little man suppressing all his hideous neuroses into his walking, smashing id. Everyone has those dark thoughts and who hasn't wanted to occasionally wish I could "hulk-out" and manifest them like Banner.

1. Daredevil - his civilian identity is just as interesting as his superhero side (especially recently, having been brilliantly written by Bendis, Brubaker and Smith, and why oh why does Brubaker have to leave at issue 500? *sob*).

2. Animal Man - Astounding work by Grant Morrison in the 80s.

3. Spider-Man - the first truly troubled superhero, and he's a geek, to boot! Top-notch stories include my personal favourite: Kraven's Last Hunt

As much as I enjoy a good superhero tale, however, with the exception of Daredevil, it's the creative team I follow, not the character. A good writer/artist combo will make a third-rate character readable. A bad writer will turn a hero into a zero.

Batman. He's the ultimate superhero because he's human, yet risks life and limb to fight for what he believes in. Yeah, he's got all the tricks and know-how, but he's by no means invulnerable. He's the guy you could almost be - if you push yourself to the limit of human endurance and had an unlimited fortune to back it up. Batman's the one character who's almost as mean, ruthless and messed up as those he fights and he still manages to have a playboy lifestyle just for show. Now that's dedication.

Superman. Yes, he has the powers that everyone wants, and is the epitome of the superhero, but forget that he's from an alien world and near godlike. Superman shows more nobility and greater humanity than any native of the planet Earth. Yes, he was born Kal El, last son of Krypton, but it's humanity that defines him. Superman could have made himself ruler of the world with his powers. Instead, he chooses to help others just cause its the right thing to do.

Spider-Man. He's got amazing powers, a brilliant mind and a razor-sharp wit. He's fought The Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom, Kraven and Carnage and he can't even get the rent payed on time. Spidey's just an ordinary kid living an extraordinary life and more often than not, he doesn't even like it that much. You might aspire to be Superman or Batman, but if you got super powers tomorrow, Spidey's the guy you'd most be like.

Yeah, it's an obvious top three, but c'mon - they're the top three superheroes for a damn good reason.

2, Midnighter is one scary badass, he can kick butt and take it like a man who has been in jail for along time.

3, Atomic Robo is such a fun action packed character that makes me laugh.

This is tough one! So many comics that I love that don't get in for one reason or another, but its going to have to be the truly greats:

1. Batman - particularly when written by Morrison, but the guy's determination, foresight and willingness to do what's right regardless just make him the best.

2. Spider-man - not kept up to date with him, but he was such a childhood favourite he has to be in here. In part, though, this is a vote for the original Spider-man 2099, who just revitalised the whole webspinning, wise-cracking gig.

3. Now the toughest decision. Could be Hellboy, could be Tom Strong, could be the Great Machine. But no, it's got to be Jack Knight - Starman. The first superhero to really make you believe he was a person, and what a person he was.

Ok, this is really tough for me. There are so many i could say and want to say. Theres Marvel heroes and DC comics, then those from Tv Programmes. But i want my say so:

No.1
Superman-simply because i know most about him as i have seen all Lois n Clarks, the films and Smallville and i think hes brilliant.

No.2
Spiderman-querky come-backs to his enemys and there isn't anything that isn't great about a man who can walk on walls and shoot webs from his wrists(although sometimes only through use of web-shooter).

No.3
Wolverine-greatest X-men memeber ever! I loved the film that came out this year, absolutely brill!

Others would have been;
Green Arrow,Iron man,Batman,Fantastic 4,Most of the Heroes cast, most X-men... and the list would go on.

1: The Shadow: Forget Batman the pale imitator. The orginal Dark Avenger with his multiple identities who always triumphed over crime had it all. He had agents so you could imagine yourself fighting along side him, the laugh which you could imitate and dead easy costume you could make out your dad's old suits.

The stories were always thrilling and just that edge of believable that it took no imagination at all to imagine yourself there. Who needed
super powers when The Shadow was concerned.

The Rocketeer: The cool as hell costume. The memorable name. He is just a pitch perfect creation. I really wanted to Cliff Secord for many many years (maybe I still do).

He was a believable hero with a beautiful girl!

Flaming Carrot: He's the Flaming Carrot? What more needs to be said?

1. Optimus Prime. Okay, do all-powerful shapeshifting giant robots count? If so, then he's possibly the only superhero ever to come with removable fists.

2. Max Guevara from Dark Angel. Because no-one wears leather and kicks ass like a genetically-altered Jessica Alba.

3. Orion from The New Gods. Because's a God. And because if you don't vote for him, he'll smite you with the power of the Astro-Force!

My top 3?

BATMAN.

WOLVERINE (pity about the movie, though...oh, well).

And the perpetually underrated KITTY PRYDE (or should that be 'Sprite'? or 'Ariel'? or 'Shadowcat'?).

Tough call but

Batman (Bruce Wayne)
Flash (Jay Garrick)
Green Lantern (Alan Scott)

I've got a soft spot for the silver age versions of the Flash and GL obviously but these were the originals

Doc Savage- Years before Superman there was Clark Savage Jr. He trained himself to be at the very peak of the human condition, both physically and mentally to the point where most thought he had superpowers.

Captain America- Because he's never the most powerful member of your superhero team but he's the one everyone respects and turns to.

Black Panther- In his comic debut, some black guy takes on and beats a young Fantastic Four singlehandedly.

This perhaps would have worked better if some classification for what makes a character a 'superhero' were actually given. I in no way consider a character like Buffy to be a superhero, and yet many people here have her as one of their choices. She may be a hero but there isn't anything particularly 'super' about her...

Anyway, my choices would have to be:

Spider-Man
Batman
Green Lantern

"I in no way consider a character like Buffy to be a superhero, and yet many people here have her as one of their choices. She may be a hero but there isn't anything particularly 'super' about her..."

Of course Buffy is a super hero. She more of a superhero than Batman in that she actually has super powers. She has super strength, speed, agility and healing power. She fights monsters, robots, and assorted human bad guys to protect humanity. What else does she need to do to qualify? Wear spandex?

Mmmmm Buffy in spandex....

Oh please, it already says in the initial post that characters like The Doctor don't really count, so I fail to see how someone like 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' qualifies. Really though, out of 70 odd years worth of fiction and people are actually voting for Buffy The Vampire Slayer?

To 127.0.0.1:

You said:

"Oh please, it already says in the initial post that characters like The Doctor don't really count, so I fail to see how someone like 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' qualifies."

I say:

Buffy is not the Doctor. She is completely different. She is a human being who's been given superpowers to fight monsters and bad guys. She is NOT mentioned in the original post as not being eligible. Until told otherwise by SFX I'd assume that she is. If they specifically meant only costumed crime fighters then they should have been more specific.

You said:

"Really though, out of 70 odd years worth of fiction and people are actually voting for Buffy The Vampire Slayer?"

I say:

People are voting for Buffy (like me) because we love her and her ongoing adventures. Just the same as people have voted for all the other superheroes on here. Personally, I don't care for a lot of the heroes that have been nominated but I'm not gonna denigrate them like you have done to Buffy. That would be disrespectful. People love what they love for their own reasons.

1 ) SUPERMAN (Kal-El / Clark Kent), because he is/was the first "super"-hero (and he's still the best)!

2) CAPTAIN MARVEL (Billy Batson), the "real one", published by DC Comics (NOT the "carbon copy" from Marvel)!

3) BATMAN (Bruce Wayne), especially the 40s & 70s versions

btw: a lot of people list "Buffy" in this thread, but Buffy is NO SUPER-HERO! (would be like someone list "Samantha" from BEWITCHED or "Catweazel", sorry)

Posted by Mike (127.0.0.1) on June 11, 2009 at 03:26 PM BST #

These are my favourite characters in the sense that stories featuring them are the ones I enjoy reading/re-reading rather than being coolest (spiderman clearly has cooler powers and "theoretically" a more deep character than some on my list, but I very rarely actually reread any story involving him because most of the actual stories are very superficial stuff).

1. Batman: lots of story arcs involving intriguing aspects to Batman's mind and his effect on Gotham.

2. Deadpool: just very interesting and amusing stories.

3. Spider Jerusalem: Ok, so you can almost transliterate some Hunter S Thompson tropes into Spider's environment, but there's plenty of originality in Warren Ellis's stories that they're still interesting, amusing and great fun. And even for the bits that are clearly "inspired" by HST, they're still amusing regardless.

3. Spider-man

(all of whom obtained their powers or were born with them *which none of my choices were* and aren't just humans with gadgets aka Batman, The Watchmen excluding Dr Manhatten, Iron Man etc. as they are just heroes in society)

If I could've chosen more I would've put Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, The Thing, any X-Man and a few others. I guess I would include Buffy as she had the power of a Slayer which she got after the previous one died and didn't use gadgets per say.
