Ultraviolet Star Joins Thor

Idris Elba has joined the cast of Thor, Kenneth Branagh’s big screen adaptation of the Marvel Comic character based on the Norse God of Thunder.

Idris, who starred in classic Channel 4 vampire series Ultraviolet and has recently appeared in such films as Obsessed and the upcoming The Taken, will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard. He joins Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Natalie Portman as love interest Jane Foster. Shooting on the film is due to begin in mid-January in Manhattan Beach, California.

He's even more famous for playing Stringer Bell on The Wire, isn't he? Or do you only do genre references?

Only if you've seen The Wire!

I for one haven't.

Okay, that is quite bizarre. I first saw Idris Elba in ULTRAVIOLET and he was brilliant in it, but seriously, mentioning him but not THE WIRE would be like saying "Marlon Brando, the star of FREE MONEY and THE FRESHMAN," and not mentioning anything else.

In related news on this movie, apparently Brian Blessed is out as Odin, replaced by Anthony Hopkins, whilst ROME's Ray Stevenson and the almost-Aragorn Stuart Townsend are in as two of Thor's comrades.
