Thursday Link-a-Mania

Evening folks. It's been slow in the world of SF today, probably because America's enjoying Thanksgiving so things have been quiet. Also, regular web dude Dave Golder is under the weather (send "get well soon" messages here). Nonetheless, here are just a few of today's quirky sci-fi stories:

Zoe Saldana talks sci-fi heroines!
Zoe Saldana, who plays the new Uhura in JJ Abrams' rebooted Star Trek universe (and is also in James Cameron's upcoming Avatar) tells Details magazine she's not just a sex plaything. "I've always gravitated toward the Sigourney Weavers, the f**king Linda Hamiltons, the Angelina Jolies," she says. "I just love strong women that are in tune with their bodies – that don't just use their bodies as sex tools." More over at SCI FI Wire.

Fantasy theme park!
The BBC is reporting that Newcastle-based company Orcestrator is planning an adventure park near Durham in which you'll stay in character and participate in battles for days. "You'll come across encounters, puzzles to be solved - effectively a mission with a goal," says one organiser of the multi-million pound development. Sounds like LARPing to us.

Smart armour!
Sounds like sci-fi, actually isn't. The PopSci blog is reporting on the US army's new intelligent armour - it can evaluate its own condition, identify the type of round being shot at it, and even generate electrical power from bullet strikes. Full story over at the PopSci site.

Ryan Reynolds talks Green Lantern!
Ryan "Deadpool" Reynolds spoke to MTV about taking on the role of Green Lantern, and meeting the film's director. "I fell in love with the character when I met with Martin Campbell," he says. "When I sat down with him, I really got what it is that this guy is all about. When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has balls of titanium." Via Total Film's website.

Prepare for the apocalypse!
Lastly, for now, our chums over at io9 have a checklist of how to prepare for the coming apocalypse:
Learn To Make Fire
Build a Team
Get a Gun. Learn to Use It
Stockpile
Learn a Marketable Skill

Wise words. How would you handle the end of the world? Do write in and let us know.

See you tomorrow! And don’t forget to follow our Twitter feed for regular breaking stories and feedback from the SFX team.

What KIND of apocalypse are we talking about, here? Zombies? Meteor? Reality bomb? Cause my checklist will depend on certain variables...

Yup, I agree with Kell, but I suppose you wouldn't know what kind of apocalypse it would be until it actually happened. Maybe some kind of elaborate branching tree diagram would be useful to cater for all eventualities?

Build a team - yeh we all know what happens to teams come the Apocalypse: they get picked off one by one whilst they argue to death over who gets to wear the red shirt. I think I'll go it alone thank you very much.

I always kicked butt in dodgeball... does that count as a marketable skill? I'm sure somehow it would come in handy... I mean, if someone wanted me as part of their apocalypse survival team. I need a team. Cause there's no "i" in team...

I'm quite good at making omlettes.

Anyone want any shoes polishing?

I can clear a room in 2 seconds with my farts,

so, although not necessarily a marketable skill, I would survive Zombies, Vampires, oh and the Attack of the Church of Reality TV ... oh, I've already mentioned zombies and the living dead already haven't I? Er ... er ...
