Shield Writer To Script Underworld 4

According to The Hollywood Reporter John Hlavin, one of the chief writers on hit US crime series The Shield, has been hired to script the fourth Underworld movie. Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the vampire vs werewolf saga, continues as producer. No director or stars are currently attached, though it would be unlikely that Kate Beckinsale would return.

The third film got around Beckinsale‘s absence by being a prequel. That won’t be the case this time, says Hlavin: “I can tell you it's not a prequel. It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honour what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements."

If that's the case, then could Mr. Hlavin then add what's missing from all of the Underworld films: humour. Black. Bleak. Gallows. Take your pick.

That's what makes them a grind to watch, seeing all these immortals snarl and mope without any wry, dry wit amongst the lot of them. Time may not have sagged their faces with age, but it appears to have erased their sense of humour. Even Lestat had a good laugh at times.

You don't know how ropey films can be saved with just having a humorous edge to save them from complete mind-numbing hopelessness. Perhaps they should rename the whole Underworld canon as 'Miserable Buggers from The Dead'.
