SFX Picks Of The Year

The SFX team present their highlights of 2008. First up, Dave B. A link to the rest of the gang follows at the foot of the article.

Dave Bradley
SFX Editor
SFX ANECDOTE OF THE YEAR:
A year of great highlights - another year of me not quite believing I get paid to travel to interesting places and meet amazing people. Of all my encounters, I'll have to highlight my trip to Lucasfilm HQ and Skywalker Ranch in San Francisco. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, it was like my pilgrimage to Graceland. The people there were enormously welcoming, and you've not seen anything until you've seen a life-size Jar Jar in Carbonite hanging on a wall.

TOP 3 TV SHOWS OF THE YEAR
Battlestar Galactica
Chuck
Medium

TOP 3 EPISODES OF THE YEAR
"Do You Hear What I Hear" – Medium
"Mr Ferguson is Ill Today" – Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
"Turn Left" – Doctor Who

TOP 3 FILMS OF THE YEAR
Speed Racer
The Dark Knight
Iron Man

TOP 3 BOOKS OF THE YEAR
Matter (Iain M Banks)
Last Argument of Kings (Joe Abercrombie)
The Steel Remains (Richard Morgan)

PERSON OF THE YEAR
Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight wouldn't have been as powerful without him, and his unfortunate death at such a young age just made it much more poignant.")

REVELATION OF THE YEAR
I expected Speed Racer to be a baffling, hypercoloured mess. But I came out of the cinema thinking, "That was awesome!" Much more fun than I was expecting to have, given that I almost didn't bother to go and see it. Such a laugh, and one of the few times when I've been really pleasantly surprised by a film.

DUD OF THE YEAR
The X-Files: I Want To Believe ("I really wanted to believe this would be a success; I'd been on the set and met the cast and had great vibes… but the result was very dull. I even went to see it twice, to make sure. Yep, not a gripping story. Bum.")

TOP 3 GAMES OF THE YEAR
Bioshock (Xbox360)
Half Life: The Orange Box (Xbox360)
Professor Layton & The Curious Village (DS)

Cool list (quite surprised to see Medium), but why is there a picture from Middleman on the link, when it's not in any of the lists?!?

Middleman is in Dave G's and Leah's lists, isn't it?

Yeah, and guess who chose the picture?

"I expected Speed Racer to be a baffling, hypercoloured mess."

And it was, complete with wooden acting, lame fight scenes and a dull story!

Apart from that it was fab.

Any word on a UK channel showing Middleman in 2009 yet?

Might make it into my choices for next year then!

It is a crime that there looks like there isnt going to be any more Middleman - it is amazing and a total geekfest on so many levels. Totally deserves its place in the list. And Natalie Morales....PHWOAR!

At least we've still got Chuck...which in the absence of Who next year is probably going to end up my new favourite show.
