RIP Majel Barrett
|
Majel Barrett Roddenberry (23 February 1932 – 18 December 2008) died yesterday, after having completed recording her part for the forthcoming Star Trek movie. Barrett first appeared in Star Trek's pilot "The Cage" as the unnamed first officer, Number One. She then returned in the classic Kirk-era series as Nurse Chapel, and then as Lwaxana Troi in The Next Generation. She also famously provided the voice of the Star Fleet on-board computers, including the Enterprise in the forthcoming movie, which was only announced a week or so ago. She had already completed the voice recording work before she died. She married Trek creator Gene Roddenberry (died 1991) in 1969. She is reported as having passed away in her sleep at her home in Bel Air early Thursday morning. |

Glad that she achieved this one last thing for all us fans and that her passing was peaceful.

I'm all for an on-screen dedication on the new film, she certainly deserves it.

Since I was a very young boy and I first got into Star Trek TNG you were like the dotty aunt I never had! Whenever you turned up in an episode it was always funny and fuzzy, and as the years went on and your visits became less frequent they were still no less valued.
It's sad to think that the new movie will be the last time we hear your voice, but reasurring to know that even as Star Trek itself enters a new era you'll be there to help steer its course - quite literally, seeing as how you're the voice of the enterprise!
Oddly I had to fight back a tear when I read this small paragraph on Wikipedia: "The Union Pacific Railroad also enlisted her voice talents for their track-side defect detector devices, used in various locations deployed west of the Mississippi River. When a defect is identified, the system responds with her recorded voice announcing information to the train's head-end crew."
Nice to know you'll be looking out for us in real life, as well as in the adventures we love so much!

you are just as much apart of star trek as the enterprise herself.
you will be grately missed by the sci fi community around the globe.
your husband created something wonderful and he brought smiles to millions and millions of people, and for that we are all truely grateful.
i hope the makers of the new star trek film acknowledge the contribution you have made to star trek over the decades, and put an on screen tribute to you.

Nurse Chapel, Lwaxana Troi and the voice of the Enterprise computer. Truly a legend in Trek history. You'll be missed.
