Preacher Set for the Big Screen

American Beauty and Road to Perdition director Sam Mendes is set to bring Garth Ennis’s comic character Preacher to the big screen, according to Variety.

Neal Moritz ("I Am Legend") will produce the movie for Columbia, which is also developing another Ennis project, The Boys.

The award winning Preacher comic series, which ran from 1995 to 2000, is about a laconic, cigarette-smoking Texan preacher whose city is decimated by an otherworldly force, forcing on a journey across the country to take on the evil. A TV series was in development at the US station HBO, but fizzled out during development earlier this year. Which, in retrospect, was probably a blessing in disguise considering the man in charge of the show was Mark Steven Johnson, director of such okay-but-hardly-spectacular comic-to-screen fare as Daredevil and Ghost Rider. We reckon Mendes is much more exciting choice of director, almost as intriguing a concept as Darren Aronofsky directing RoboCop!

After the past decade (ish) of a film and TV series getting continually closer and further away, I won't believe this til it's actually filming. Writing? No, the TV series got that far. Casting? No, the last movie got that far.

Though I suppose they could film it and then not release it...

OK, I won't believe this til I buy my ticket. Actually, they could still cancel it then. I won't believe it til the end credits roll. And I bet they'll have sanitised it so it won't really be Preacher any more, so even then it won't count.

Cynical? Never!

Wow, this turned out much crazier than I'd intended...

I'm with badblokebob on this one. A Preacher film is almost certainly going to be a shadow of the comic. They won't want to offend middle America and Preacher in all its glory is about being offensive - especially about religion. Let's not forget how removing all the religious aspects ripped the heart out of The Golden Compass. Also, with regards to casting: I bet they won't even consider Lance Henriksen for the Saint of Killers even though he's perfect (check out Near Dark for proof). And Cassidy will be another American with an Oirish accent. This will suck - BIG TIME.

I will be a shadow of the comic, films of comics ALWAYS are but it could reasonable, but as minorityreport says, no Orish accents, there enough good irish actors to play it well
