Tin Tin Finds Backers, but No Sequel Commitment
In the wake of the break up between Dreamworks and Paramount, Spielberg has found backers for his big screen version of Tin Tin (penned by Doctor Who showrunner-to-be Steven Moffat) but no commitment to a sequel. Originally, the plan was for a trilogy of films with Peter Jackson directing the second, but while Paramount and Sony have stumped up the cash for the first film, the deal at the moment only covers one movie. The film is still expected to be ready for 2010, according to Variety.

Universal Nabs Scorching Video Game Property
Universal has won a bidding war for an Electronic Arts video game called Dante’s Inferno, which hasn’t even been released yet, reports Variety. The game (and the film) involves a journey through hell, and while it’s common for film companies to bid on novels before they’re published, films based on video games are usually adapted from games that have already proven successful.

Why doesn't Doctor Who or Torchwood ever do this?

Not that I wouldn't jump through a hoop to even MEET Joss Whedon.

And Firefly got cancelled cos it was too smart for TV execs, and got screwed over in the scheduling
