Joss Whedon on Dollhouse and Ripper

Ripper is still a potential project and Eliza Dushku will get to stretch her acting skills in Dollhouse, reveals Joss Whedon in an exclusive interview in SFX 166 (on sale 16 January).

Dushku will be starring in Whedon’s new show, Dollhouse (strikes permitting) as a secret agent, Echo, who can be programmed with the skills and knowledge for any assignment she’s given. The twist is, after each assignment, her memory of it is wiped, and she spends her downtime in a "doll house" with other agents, all unaware of who or what they are.

So, Whedon’s writing for a strong, all-action leading female again, but Echo won’t be another Buffy, he assures us: "Well, for one thing, it’s Eliza effin’ Dushku. What’s funtastic is that she'll be playing a host of different personalities – including a total, childlike naïf – and that's not something she's been given the opportunity to do.”

Of Ripper, the long-gestating series starring Anthony Head once again as Giles (but this time fighting dark forces in the UK and produced by the BBC) Whedon’s reveals: "Ripper – or whatever Tony [Head] and I get to make – isn’t imminent, but it’s absolutely on the slate. The Beeb has been grand about it."

Dollhouse immediately brought to mind Joe 90. Could be Josephine 90. Is it a bit like The Pretender aswell?
Hopefully it'll be good.

Dushka and Dollshouse, let's hope this is more than a US one series flash in the pan.I seem to remember that this idea has already been explored by the sci-fi author Phillip Jose Farmer, where he wrote two books about people who lived one day a week and were then put to sleep,to be replaced by another person the next day.Eventually the secret got out and people started jumping days and living more than one day or more than one personae. No doubt this is what will eventually happen to Dushka.Weadons idea is a good one and should work with good writers etc.Let's hope that Miss Dushka does not turn into the female version of Eric Close,ie the actress who cannot get passed one series.

It'll all depend on the supporting cast or preferably there'll be an ensemble cast like in Firefly.

Sounds good to me-there's been an Alias-shaped hole in the schedules for too long in my humble op. Especially if the Dollhouse is full of hot chicks! With Guns!
I've turned into a Fratboy at the thought....

Let's hope FOX don't ruin this one like they did with Firefly!

Amazing writing + Amazing acting + Amazing series + FOX Executives = Flop!
