Barack obama has become the first black president, but the real question is, will Paterson Joseph be the first black Doctor Who? The man who many feel has the best chance of pulling off that feat tells The Guardian today that he'd relish the role were it to be offered to him: “any actor would love the challenge,” says Joseph diplomatically.
Paterson, who will be starring in the upcoming BBC Survivors revival, goes on to say about being the bookies' fave, “I'm afraid I can't make any comment on it. I'm not a gambler. And I don't approve of gambling unless it's for the Grand National.”
But he reveals that he loves SF and fantasy ans that one of his favourite roles was as he Marquis de Carabas (right) in Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere: “I love that character because he's so flamboyant but also darkly dangerous - and he's also 200 years old. In no other genre can you be believable as an immortal character. I love sci-fi for that, so yeah - I'm a big fan."
. And I don't approve of gambling unless it's for the Grand National.
Or circus of Blood and death as its known these days.

Of all the names that have been put forward for the role so far, this guy definitely ticks all the right boxes. He can act, is relatively unknown and so won't come with any baggage from previous roles. Plus he's young and good looking. He'd be ideal, but something still tells me that Moffat is going to choose someone from left field that no-one has heard of, never mind thought of. I have complete faith in the man to cast a great successor to Tennant, and it won't be bloody Jason Stathan, Eddie Izzard, James Nesbitt of any of the other ludicrous names being flung around at the moment.

Agree with the above: Moffatt will go his own way in the same sense that RTD did.

There's nothing wrong with a black Doctor IMO, a female Doctor may be a concession too far and I don't think it would work as well as Starbuck's gender transformation in the new Battlestar Galactica.

Hmmm, but he wasn't very good in Jekyll. I know his character was a slime bag, but his acting made me cringe every time he was on screen and the same goes with his roll in Parting of the Ways/Bad Wolf.

No thanks, i can think of 10 other people who would be better as the Doctor. Surpassing David Tennant is a major job and i'm afraid he isn't up to it.

Wasn't so much his acting in Jekyll, it was more the terrible accent. Worse thing I'vce seen him do.

I'm going to say it. I disapprove of the doctor bein black and i disapprove of the doctor beiing a woman. I'd resent if this opinion was taken to be that i'm a racist or sexist - i'm simply resolute in my interprutation of who the doctor should be. If the doctor had always been black and someone wanted to turn him white after 45years there would be outrage so i'm entitled to my condemnation of him changing sex and ethnicity.
P.S. Paterson Joseph is a fine actor. Sexy too. But then Lilly Savage was a decent commedian & you wouldn't ask her/him to be the doc.

In response to Controvertial opinion's comments, your point seems to be that because the Doctors never been black before it can't happen now?? What absolute tosh, the Doctor had never had dark hair until he regenerated in the second doctor, he had never had, curly big curly hair and wide toothy grin before the fourth Doctor, he'd never been blond and youthful before the fifth Doctor? The regenerative process is supposed to be completely random, as in the line 'You never quite know what you are going to get'. The main thing is that whoever it that gets the job, they must be able to act, regardless of their skin colour! Would you have the same view if the next Doctor was going to be ginger with a pale complexion, after all he's never looked like that before?

I agree that the Doctor's skin colour should be just another facet of his general appearance and therefore subject to the changes of regeneration. I don't think the same can be said of his gender. It's been made clear many times in the series that there are male and female timelords and I am not aware of any suggestion that the two are interchangable. Also it would be far too confusing for us fangirls if David Tennant suddenly became a woman!

Mr Joseph has shown that he can do the humour required to play the doctor, in shows such as Hyperdrive and Peep Show. He has also shown a high level of acting gravitas (and I was fortunate to see him on the stage at the National in Emperor Jones). I think he would make a fine Doctor has he has the range, a commanding presence and just the right manic glint in his eye. I also agree that nothing stated before with regard to the regeneration process discounts the possibility of a change of skin colour, and we have seen black Time Lords before, so it is perfectly acceptable for DT to regenerate into PJ. I'd love him to be the next Doctor Who as I think he'd be able to fill Mr Tennant's rather large shoes.

This is a really tough one. I think the arguments that the process is random have some merit and I'm coming round to the idea of a black doctor, but I still couldn't cope with a change in gender. This is not because I am sexist but simply because boys are best and girls smell of wee.
