Fashion Crime Lord?

And still the chatter continues about the Eleventh Doctor's wardrobe choices. The BBC have corraled a bunch of fashion tsars to share their opinions on Matt Smith's tweedy time-togs. Esquire editor Jeremy Langmead likes the look: "The cross between rookie geography teacher and Hoxton clubkid works well: a bit of old school time traveller meets modern day adventurer." Andrew Groves, course director for fashion at the University of Westminster, is less convinced by the bow-tie and bovver boots ensemble: "It seems a curiously British idea to make the lead character in a prime time TV show look purposely and perversely less attractive than they usually are." Ouch. Head here for the full verdict. SFX, meanwhile, doorstopped Mrs Edna Chives, 81, of Frome. She told us: "He looks like a very nice young man. I do miss that Jon Pertwee, though. He was da shit, fo sho." |

Back when they first put Matt up on screen at the start of the year, I got the impression there was something 'different' about him, the outfit sort of compliments this.

While there'll never be an outfit that EVERYONE likes, there's a lot of ill will about this one going around. Half the fans seem to be complaining that it's too old-fashioned and that nobody would wear it, the other half that it's too generic and the sort of thing you'd see everywhere.
Damned Who fans. We're never satisfied.

I'm pleased Dr Smith apparently won't be pandering to the yoof audience that makes up a massive chunk of his fanbase these days. When Matt was first announced I had bad thoughts about a saggy-trousered hoody-wearing emo 'Dokta' - Smith's promo pics looked pretty yoof, let's face it - but the tweed/bowtie/doc marten look thoroughly dispels any such concerns for me.

It will be different and yet the same, it's always been :)

And somehow I think this guy has missed the point of Doctor character himself. The reason I love it so much is because the Doctor is so different and yet distinctly british. The day we have a generic square jawed american hero type, dressed in modern jeans and t-shirt is the end of the show we all love. The Doctor is always at his best when he's kind of looks out of place. Plus I agree with John Cooper, seeing stills is nowhere near the same as seeing the guy in action. Give it two or three episodes and the whole fuss will have blown over and it will be accepted as the Doctor's look.
