Dollhouse cancelled

Everyone and their dog saw it coming but now it’s official, US network Fox is shutting up shop on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Currently on a brief winter hiatus, the mind-bending show has been struggling in the ratings since its surprise renewal in May, hovering around the disastrously low one million mark for much of the season. Despite this, like the first season, Dollhouse proved a hit on DVR with a 50% bump in viewers which many hoped would be enough to see a full season, 22-episode, run.

Speaking out on Twitter star Fran Kranz who plays master engineer Topher Brink said: “It's hard. I'm sad. But they will air the rest and they are going to be great. Thanks for being great fans and giving us all a second season.” While Dichen Lachman (Sierra) also spoke out on the social networking site: “Keep watching guys, Fox is still showing all 13… Feel sad though. Joss told us this morning.”

This seems to confirm Variety’s report that Fox will resume airing the remaining nine episodes from the second series on 4 December as planned. The silver lining for fans with this early announcement is that the show, currently filming its 11th episode, will get an ending that will (hopefully) give some closure to Echo and the actives.

Dollhouse was extremely lucky to ever get a chance at a second season.

Not unexpected but still bad news. Dollhouse was one of the most morally murky shows out there. A lot better than it should have been. It's problem was it wasn't what the American viewing audience wanted.

Joss Whedon already considered this show a failure according to The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Thomas Dekker (http://www.dvdreview.co.uk/page/dvdreview?entry=interview_thomas_dekker).

I thought the idea of Dollhouse sounded terrible, but I watched the first season and found it particularly enjoyable. I waited until it got a second season because I didn't want to love another cancelled Joss series. Too late, I love it and it's cancelled anyway.

Even my shorter half liked it, and Firefly. My real concern is that we won't see another Joss series, he'll chuck the towel in.

Pity, it had real potential to become something completely different, judging from the final episode of series one. I wonder if it would have been more successful if it had kicked off with that from the beginning and dealt with what we've seen so far as flashbacks, like Defying Gravity is doing at the moment?

Saying that, I've thought it's missing that Joss Whedon...indefinable something we had in Buffy and Firefly from the start. Sorry to see it go, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

Another flop for Joss, and not really a surprise. It was god awful. Fox should stop giving this man any money to make anything, his shows are all rubbish and flops (barring Buffy and then that wasn't much cop!!!) I do hope he never makes anything again.

Good riddance.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but no one can deny Joss is a cult icon and it's a shame that Buffy was comparitavely his worsed series and yet was the most successful, while Gems like firefly and dollhouse (truly original ideas and writing) are canned before they can build momentum. I hope he doesn't quit, he's a spectacular man with unique talent that is noticed by his many many fans but perhaps not by FOX

Truly disappointed. First Firefly (which was awesome) and now Dollhouse (which was intriguing and original). Just seen 2.4 and thought it was the best episode yet, only to learn that I not only have to wait till Jan for more, but that just as characters are starting to shine, it's been cancelled.
Doh! Keep at it Joss.
