Doctor Who On The Beach

Shooting on the Matt Smith‘s first season is now underway, much to the surprise of sunbathers on a beach near Cardiff. This top pic is absolutely screaming out for a caption competition, so be our guest. The bottom pic of the three is a bit spoilery – you have been warned.

Right, spoilery pic next, so we’ll leave a bit of a gap…

Yep, that is Alex Kingston, apparently back as River Song. But what’s going on around them? They appear to have landed in an alternative universe where Lost was produced by BBC Wales on BBC Wales budget… You can click on the image above for a larger version.

Have you seen these cool Doctor Who tattos?

Matt Smith's costume looks fantastic in that bottom pic. I'm especially enjoying the elbow patches and the braces sticking out from his jacket.

Wonder what they're doing on Bad Wolf's Bay?!

This looks interesting-already Moffat & Co.
seem to have established a new look for the
Doctor and his TARDIS,with the Doc's retro
outfit (A touch of Troughton?)>

Not sure about (SPOILER)'s return though:much
as I like the actress, I feel bringing back
her character will diminish the story she
appeared in.

Posted by Redman (127.0.0.1) on July 20, 2009 at 07:15 PM BST #

Has anybody else spotted the Hartnell-era circle logo on the door of the new TARDIS?

It'll be nice to put some sort of closure on the appearance of Spoilery McSpoiler (if only to stop bad fan fiction). As far as the costume is concerned, there's absolutely nothing stopping him having some sort of long coat over it on occasion. Plus, it should be about the character and acting, not the costume. Otherwise, I would have hated the Ninth Doctor (I've even got a soft spot for the Sixth Doctor...).

Oh,yes, the Multi-coloured abomination poor
Colin Baker had to wear. Even JNT admitted
later it was mistake.

On the other hand, I liked the small question
marks S18 Tom and Peter had on their shirt
collars-it was a nice visual shorthand for
their "Doctorishness".

I saw Karen in the Kevin Bishop show-I think
she's a good actress, and that she'll be
an excellent companion. Plus, she's also
gorgeous. ;)

They have had to do a new TARDIS as they are now filming in HD and the old one would have looked really bad. That's why it looked a bit garish.

Posted by 127.0.0.1 on July 20, 2009 at 10:04 PM BST #

Redman, I don't see that bringing her back will diminish the story she was in - after all, we know she'd met the doctor previously, so we have to see her again/beforehand from her point of view.

And do we need to explain such things as the patches or bow tie? I'm wearing a grey hoodie and jeans and some rather lovely James Tudor pants, but would anyone ask me to explain them?

So, what - nobody is going to comment on the superhuman determination of those welsh sunbathers? everyone else is in thick padded coats at every opportunity, and they're almost naked. On some rocks. In the wind and cold.Surrounded by film crew, yet in no way going to let this spoil their 'tan time'. Respect.

Doc's new costume - brilliant. It helps reduce the frankly jarring impact of the new whippersnapper's 'yoof-ish' look. Good choice, Moff.

New companion - gingerlicious.

But never mind all that; what about the Tardis's new look? Interesting. It does raise a few questions, though - namely, if the exterior can transform, does that mean the chameleon circuit is working? If so, why the police box look? Still, I like the new clean, HD-friendly lines of Mr Smith's travelling caravan. As mentioned above, very Cushing/early Who. Wonder what the interior will look like? With all the changes happening for season 5, a major internal Tardis redesign may be in order.

And, in keeping with the apparent retro-ness of the Moff's new show, how about a new arrangement of the theme music? In old-Who each Doctor had their own version of the theme and their own titles too.

Exciting times in the Whoniverse!

is it me or has the tardis been given a lick a blue paint.....it looks too plasticy and modern not like its travelled through time and space?

Posted by jake (127.0.0.1) on July 21, 2009 at 11:04 AM BST #

According to a Doctor Who book that I've forgotten the name of the interior of the TARDIS can change due to its camelion qualities. As for the exterior, maybe the circuit is broken too the extent that it can't change it's out form but can change the details on it. Or maybe it changes as the TARDIS grows in age. Or maybe Moffat just fancied a change :-)

I am wondering what the interior will look like though.

Posted by Mr Kleason (127.0.0.1) on July 21, 2009 at 11:06 AM BST #

I'd love to see a bit more fun with the TARDIS - more exploration of the interior and perhaps a few episodes where the Doc gets the chameleon circuit working... perhaps that's why the TARDIS looks so spanky-new - a little jaunt in 60's London..? And on a side-note, has it been revealed where/when the Doctor's new companion comes from? I thought they might be going for the 60's from the initial shots until i saw she was wearing Cons (then i realised that fashion is VERY retro at the moment!)

I wish some people would stop bleating on about Matt Smiths age, and so called 'yoof'. He's an actor playing a 900 year old timelord. I seem to remember a lot of people claiming that Peter Davison was also too young at the time of his casting....yet he turned in one of the most mature incarnations of the Doctor? Why not wait to see his performance before writing him off. Personally, I think he's going to be amazing, just look at his face, at that costume, he just looks other worldly, perfect casting.

"Oh,yes, the Multi-coloured abomination poor

JN-T, like Colin, really backed down, didn't they? If you read interviews from the time both are taking credit for the thing!

To be fair, I don't get why they disowned it - it's kind of perfect for the most self-publicizing Doctor of the lot to wear something that will put people's jaws on the ground. The only daft thing was that it interfered with the design, so that everything had to be balanced around the coat so that the cameras could get a decent picture! Now that was a bit daft!

I like Matt's look - it's all very Troughton. Looking forward to this!

Looking good, looking very very good. Not sure about the new look TARDIS though, abit in yr face but i suppose it will grow on me.

Still Tennant's departure is coming and i really can't believe he's going. Sorry still in that famous Egyptian river for the moment.

"I wish some people would stop bleating on about Matt Smiths age, and so called 'yoof'...Why not wait to see his performance before writing him off."

Um, I wasn't writing him off Naysayer, nor was I 'bleating'. He does look yoof. Not even you can deny that. But I'm just as excited as the next guy (you, possibly?) to see what Smithy will do with the role. That's what I love about Who: what was originally a desperate but inspired plot device to replace a reluctant William Hartnell back in the late 60's has since become an integral part of the show. It allows for amazing flexibility, and is the real reason for the show's astonishing longevity.

You go Mr Smith, can't wait to meet you.

(BTW, I hope that puffa-style jacket in the first pic isn't part of the costume...but those flabby tourists would make a killer running joke through the series...)

Like the look of Dr Smith's bow tie and elbow patches. And the return of River is going to be interesting.
Wouldn't it be great if Joss Whedon wrote a DW episode though. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=131924374687&ref=nf

"is it me or has the tardis been given a lick a blue paint.....it looks too plasticy and modern not like its travelled through time and space?"

Yeah it looks like it's been completely rebuilt. Check out the white window frames. And it looks like proper wood too, not the fibreglass version they used during Tom Baker's Season 18 because the crew complained about having to lug the heavy wooden panels between locations.
Is it my imagination or does this one look taller too? Or maybe the Doctor and Amy are just shortarses...

Tennant's battered-looking Tardis kinda fit with his beatnick britpop look, slightly scruffy and rumpled looking. Maybe Dr Smith will be a more finicky character, and as the Tardis is telepathically linked with him maybe it assumes some of his personality traits. Or something.

Posted by PJ Bottoms (127.0.0.1) on July 21, 2009 at 06:25 PM BST #

It'll probably be explained away by the Moffesque "wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey". Or not at all.

Posted by Meddling Monkfish (127.0.0.1) on July 21, 2009 at 09:48 PM BST #

if that means there will be river song continuity then I am seriously very happy about that.

Always hate it when certain franchises set up future events and then never go through with them - ok, I'm talking about Marvel and DC.

Posted by Ray (127.0.0.1) on July 22, 2009 at 01:06 AM BST #

PJ Bottoms I wasn't refering to your comments, in fact I agree with most of what you've said. Just unfortunate I used the term 'yoof' so soon after you?

Just a thought, but does anyone else think that all these changes, i.e. new brand spanking looking Tardis, new console room e.t.c. indicate that when we rejoin the 11th Doctor at the beginning of the fifth series, it may not be immediately after the regeneration at the end of the Tennent specials. A bit like we met the 9th Doctor, so he's been off on his travels a bit before we meet him again? Could be nothing, but it's just a thought.

Posted by The Naysayer (127.0.0.1) on July 22, 2009 at 08:41 AM BST #

Give the guy a chance. Not sure about the bowtie, but think the braces are great. Is it a coincidence that Paul McCartney sported a pair in NY last week. Are they the fashion item of the year?

Posted by coolguy (127.0.0.1) on July 22, 2009 at 09:08 AM BST #

"does anyone else think that all these changes...indicate that when we rejoin the 11th Doctor at the beginning of the fifth series, it may not be immediately after the regeneration at the end of the Tennent specials?"

Interesting idea. It might be a nice way for the Moff to stamp his signature over his new show, by starting off his tenure in a slightly unexpected way. However, for my part, I'd like to see all the grisly details - perhaps some existential uncertainty a la the Baker/Davison regeneration or - dare I say it - the Davison/Baker2 regeneration. Plus, you have to remember that this show is essentially aimed at kids, who have a famously short attention span. Wouldn't do to confuse the little blighters.

Posted by PJ Bottoms (127.0.0.1) on July 22, 2009 at 09:40 AM BST #

It's only a thought, if it does carry straight through I'll be interested to see how they deal with the console room change over? Will it be as off the cuff as the introduction of the wood panel version in season 14? Or will Moffat ustilise the Desk top theme mentioned in 'Time Crash'?

I think I read somewhere that RTD has said this regeneration is going to be a little different than previous ones so who knows what to expect? Like PJ Bottoms, I like to see all the grisly details, for me one of the joys of Doctor Who is the whole regeneration process, when the Doctor chooses his new outfit, finally regains his senses to save the day e.t.c. is what makes it so magical. Much as I've liked Tennents take on the role and while I'll be sad to see him go, I can't wait to meet this new Doctor and I think the timing is just right. Can't wait to see the look on my kids faces when he changes...

Posted by The Naysayer (127.0.0.1) on July 22, 2009 at 10:26 AM BST #

Maybe the TARDIS will regenerate at the same time the Doctor does, explaining the changes or maybe Matt Smith's Doctor just says "I'm bored with this interior" flicks a switch and the console room changes around him into it's new look.

I also wonder if he'll be disapointed that he's not ginger again.

I read somewhere that Alex Kingston may not neccasserily be playing River Song. I hope she is though. Would be good to give that character some more backstory, espically knowing that she will eventually die in the Library

Posted by Mr Kleason (127.0.0.1) on July 22, 2009 at 12:44 PM BST #

But apparently the 'coral' console room, like the current Tardis model, won't stand up to close inspection at HD? As this years specials have all been filmed in HD can we expect the next three to be Tardislite, like 'Planet of the Dead'? It's been my suspicion for a while that for this reason, the regeneration will take place outside of the Tardis?

Posted by The Naysayer (127.0.0.1) on July 22, 2009 at 01:40 PM BST #

It's amazing how much us geeks can read into three slightly lo-res pictures, isn't it?

It's started already.The
episodes haven't even been transmitted,
and now some people online
are whinging that Moffat and Smith
"have killed the show".

I wouldn't worry. People said the same thing
when Pat took over from Billy... ;)

"one of the joys of Doctor Who is the whole regeneration process, when the Doctor chooses his new outfit."

They totally missed a trick during the brief shot of the Tardis's vast wardrobe at the end of The Christmas Invasion. It would have been amazing to see some old Doctor cozzies dotted around the place. I think I saw a long scarf draped somewhere, but it would have been cool to see perhaps Troughton's massive fur coat hanging up, or Davison's cricketing ensemble, or even THE Colin Baker's hideous harlequin suit. Come on Moffat, please the fanboys...

Posted by PJ Bottoms (127.0.0.1) on July 23, 2009 at 06:50 PM BST #

Actually, it's not dissimilar to John Smith's outfit in Human Nature/The Family of Blood...

The only problem is that in series 4 Riversong explained that he looked much younger than she last saw him. The problem the new doctor (her doctor) is younger!!! Oh well Riversong's back!

Posted by Dalekgirl007 (127.0.0.1) on July 25, 2009 at 08:53 PM BST #

Who's to say that the eleventh Doctor is River Song's Doctor? It could be the 12th, 13th or even 25th incarnation (Yep, they'll get around the 12 regenerations thing). This could be River Song's first meeting with the Doctor, it doesnt mean it has to be the last?

Posted by The Naysayer (127.0.0.1) on July 28, 2009 at 04:32 PM BST #

I think this means that River Song will be like the Brigadier, a multi-doctor carry-over character. AND I hear that the Tardis will return to a more "modern retro" (Oxymyron I know) look both inside and out.

Those that are already giving Matt Smith the "thumb's down" are being more than patently unfair, they're unknowingly perhaps, falling into the category of "spoiled". I saw him in the Lockart stories and thought he'd be great. I mean, he beat Pertwee's son in auditions and that gent had the bookies believing it too. It might sound heretic, but let me echo what I heard another say about David Tennant. That RTD and the BBC were way too INDULGENT by letting DT do only specials this year so he could go off and do the Hamlet deal. I find that I am somewhat ready for a "NU WHO" as well as Stephen Moffatt (sp) in the producer/writer's chair.
