Doctor Who logo update

A quick update. This alternative arrangement of the logo has gone up gone the BBC publicity site, so maybe that answers our earlier question about how the logo might appear in the opening titles. Or maybe not. And we've also been contacted by the BBC to tell us that the the "Doctor Who" lettering should be referred to as "the logo" while the police box graphic is "the insignia". So now you know. Although presumably Steven Moffat didn't when he wrote his comment in the official press release…

Liking that arrangement better

I can't say I'm impressed. Underwhelmed was my initial feeling and It's not as though I've had a long time to anticipate the change as I only found out about it this morning.

I loved the previous insignias/logos but this one is bland and unimaginative. If they are trying to create exitement and interest I think they have shot themselves in the foot.

At least it looks like its part of the program now.
the last one, the "lozenge", looked like it could go on any other random series, Sci-Fi or otherwise.

Personally I love it.

Hmmmmn!!

Nah - I dont think I like it!! I Like the Concept of the DW being in the Shape of the Tardis - but I just dont think it works!! SORRY!!

I dont like it!! :(

I don't like it but then I never liked the last one at first either. I reckon it'll look a lot better once animated and I'm assuming this also means there's going to be a completely new intro sequence?

Much, much better. Really like this one. Can't wait for the new series.

It`s gone round the Facebook community and altho the font for Doctor Who is good, the logo (sorry insignia) hasn`t been well received by ANYONE I know.... It`s never too late to change it guys !

Like everything else Steven Moffat does, it seems a bit joyless to me.

Posted by 127.0.0.1 on October 06, 2009 at 05:13 PM BST #

I think it is a great big slab of lovely-retro-whooey-groovyness and quite simply the best thing since the spiffing diamond. And what's more I can see it on film posters the world over... mark my words!

Personally I don't like it but I'll learn to adapt. Although I *do* like this second design better.

I have faith in The Grand Moff and look forward to where he's going to take us, although I don't envy the shoes he has to fill.

c'mon guys, get serious, IT IS JUST A LOGO
i am beginning to get the impression people want moffat to fail
this is the greatest show in our country, lets protect it people

Ah, Doctor Who fans! A new logo and the world is going to end!
'WE DON'T LIKE CHANGE!' I hear them cry! Until it happens, then they get used to it. But, then one bad episode and the programme might as well be cancelled as it is not as good as it used to be!

Ignore 'em Moff! You know what makes Who work and I cannot wait until your first season!

Well said 'areyoumymummy', the negativity that surrounds anything new that crops upto do with Doctor Who, be it casting, design, costume, is indigative of our current society i.e. negative, destructive and damn right nasty. I've learnt to let the moaners just get on with it, in the end it changes nothing while the rest of us can just get on with enjoying the show!

I find it a bit meh, but as long as the programme's good I'll live with it.

Posted by Cathy (127.0.0.1) on October 06, 2009 at 09:13 PM BST #

It's meh, but as long as they keep the theme tune I don't care

Re 'areyoumymummy':

IT'S NOT JUST A LOGO!

(It's an insignia, too...get with the program!)

It's leagues ahead of the previous one in interms of capturing the feel of Dr. Who. It's retro while staying current. But why can't their designers break their love affair with lens flares? They are the tools of amateurs with a free copy of Photoshop. Get rid of those, and the logo looks much more professional.

well i like it :-)

Posted by Lee Grice (127.0.0.1) on October 06, 2009 at 10:01 PM BST #

Actually this is an improvement on the previous one, which looked like a five minute job that I could have done better in three. At least this one looks deliberate.

Come on, it could be worse. It could be flickering all over the screen in various typefaces with fake scratchy-film effects and static on the soundtrack. I mean, that always works.

I have now moved from "Nope, definitely not going to bother" to "Well, maybe I'll look at the first episode just for a laugh." Which is not bad going for a logo.

Here's an idea, why don't SFX set up a little challenge for all these moaners to design their own versions, it's all so easy to say 'meh, it's rubbish, I could have done better'. Well, lets have a look then, perhaps it's something that could be done through the forum?

They've whinged how they could write and cast better than the production team for years, well here's something that can actually put them to the test?

I love it, and i am looking forward to Matt Smith Doctor very much. Still be sad to see DT go at Christmas/New year though.

Now, its not bad... its old school.. just like the Indaina Dr. Jones outfit for teaching (http://www.principalspage.com/theblog/wp-content/uploads//2008/03/indiana-jones.jpg Picture to put next to matt's) they have for Matt... I Do hope they do not go tooo old school mainly and don't get me wrong I loved the older show as I do the newer show.. but, if they go back to far than the newer viewers may stop watch thus the show being called off (due to the fact there is no enough people watching) again for god knows how long.
Lets hope they have a happy middle for the new viwers and the old viewers.

Very cool! I think it's great! The new logo seems like a nod towards the ones used during the Pertwee, Davison, and McGann eras which is definitely no bad thing IMHO! Cannot wait to see it in action as part of the title sequence next year! Bring it on! :D

As for the insignia of DW making up the TARDIS...brilliant product branding idea! It will be good to see that on future books, DVD's, etc.! I'd certainly like a key ring with a DW-looking TARDIS on it! :D

It looks like a fridge. A stainless-steel fridge with a lamp on top. And lens flares.

The font is awful; the kerning is worse (the "CTO" in the middle of "Doctor" gives you a sense of what I mean).

I get that Moffat wants to put his imprimatur on the series, but he could have just taken a piss around the perimeter of the studio and have done with it.

Doesn't it look a bit like the 31 Who logo from the BSB dr who weekend?
