Design the Doctor!

Now we know who the next Doctor is, the killer question becomes 'What will he wear?'

Over his ten incarnations the last survivor of Gallifrey has rocked a variety of looks from the depths of the space-time wardrobe. Edwardian frock-coats, bohemian scarves, dandy velvet, cricket clobber, question-mark infested tank tops and the ever dependable decorative vegetable. We'll draw a discreet veil over Colin Baker's eye-skewering '80s fashion statement (technically it was less of a fashion statement, more of a suicide note...)

But what should Doctor-elect Matt Smith wear? Do you see him in fogeyish tweeds or should he go for cosmic emo? A '40s demob whistle or a rhinestone-encrusted Elvis jumpsuit? Could it even be time for the first truly transvestite Time Lord?

We want to see your ideas. Artistic types, draw your vision of the Eleventh Doctor's ideal outfit and send it to us here at SFX Towers. You can email your pictures to nsetchfield@futurenet.co.uk or pop them in the post to Dress the Doctor Competition, SFX, Future Publishing, 30 Monmouth Street, Bath BA1 2BW. We'll print the best in the magazine and display others in a gallery on this website.

Get your entries in by Friday 23 January. And, as they used to say in Tony Hart's Gallery, and now for the adventures of Morph. Or rather we're sorry, but we cannot return any submissions.

I'm going for something with plenty of question marks on it, after all it is Doctor WHO?

Could we please have a Doctor who doesn't have a 'uniform' please? Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee had a style of clothes they wore, but no specific 'uniform'.
Wouldn't he just smell if he wore the same stuff over and over again?

Would it not make sense to have the Dr dress according to whichever time, place and style he finds himself in in any given story? Though of course, togas might be one step too far...

Why not a Goth Doc? Matt Smith as Robert Smith?

Can't see the "different clothes each week" working for the modern Doctor Who. The Doctor has to be instantly recognisable for the audience's sake, but also, because within the series, he hardly knows where the TARDIS is gonna fetch up next. A generic style like the 3rd Doctor had is better, but to be honest, I think the way they've done it since the 9th Doctor makes the most sense: Some regular clothes with a wee tweak here and there - different shirts, shoes, ties, that soft of thing.

Not least because it makes life that bit easier when shooting things out of sequence and the only thing you have to worry about for continuity regarding the Doctor's wardrobe is a different coloured shirt.

Maybe I'll give it a go...

I'm all for the Doctor having a consistent style, but second the anti uniform feeling. The ninth and 10th doctors worked well as they were iconic without screaming 'look at me! I'm eccentric!' After all, a man who travels through space and time in a blue box hardly needs outlandish clothes to make him memorable.
As long as they avoid Rupert Bear horror of previous incarnations I'll be happy.

I think what each individual Doctor needs is a recognisable outline, rather than a uniform. The JNT years almost seemed to be trying too hard to create a recognisable uniform for each Doctor, whereas before that each Doctor had an outline, which modified from story to story or season to season while remaining along the same theme. The new series seems to have gone for something inbetween, and I think it's worked quite well, although I have to admit the ninth Doctor's U-boat captain ensemble didn't do it for me? I've got a couple of ideas, so I'll give it a go. For me this guy is screaming out for some form of frock coat.

Twenties Chicago gangster, sharp suit, hat, spats! Or maybe fifties teddy boy?!

The first four Doctors had individual styles (even Tom Baker's famous scarf often changed, not to mention all of the different coats that he wore), but the next three Doctors (and, unfortunately, Tom Baker too in his final year) basically wore uniform costumes...and ridiculously affected ones at that (Peter Davison's cricketer, Colin Baker's clown, Sylvester McCoy's prop-comic).

It's hard to comment on Paul McGann, 'cause we got so little of him.

Christopher Eccleston had that cool coat...but vintage Nazi-wear didn't seem very Doctorish; and I like David Tennant's wardrobe, but I wish he'd had a few different suits (burgundy, maybe, or charcoal).

And I'm fairly certain that I had a point when I started typing all of this, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was (it's hell getting old)...

:-/

Maybe it was that Matt Smith should, IMHO, wear something closer to the Edwardian and/or Bohemian vibe of the first four Doctors?

I'm thinking a basic outfit, similar to Eccleston's, but with nods and winks to previous Doctor's. I'm not talking about decorative veg or psychedelic colour schemes, but maybe a recorder or a yo-yo shoved randomly into an inside pocket. And lose the long coat. This kid has to get himself noticed, and out of Tennant's shadow.

Come to think of it, the wardrobe he's wearing in the promotional pictures serves rather well.

Has the doctor ever worn jeans? Maybe it's time he did?!

Cosmic Emo whould be awesome though I don't think everybody could appreciate the genius of it. The look he has in the promo pictures would be good too.

I think it's time we had an outfit with a bit more colour to it. We've had two excellent but dark costumes, I think it's time to brighten things up a little!

I think he should wear a Jean outfit, with sailor style overcoat&cable knit sweater underneath. That if he dosn't cut his hair.Matt Smith looks like he would be a young rebelious DR.That keeping with in Dr Who's Bohiemien stlye.
