BLOG Six new Red Dwarf episodes a possibility

This weekend blogger Narin Bahar attended the Better Than Life convention and heard from the cast of Red Dwarf about plans to bring the series back for more:

Red Dwarf back for more?

It's the news Red Dwarf fans have been waiting for - the cast have confirmed for the first time that the show's creators are planning a new full series of the much-loved show.

Speaking at the Better Than Life convention this weekend, Robert Llewellyn (Kryten), Chloe Annett (Kochanski) and Danny John-Jules (Cat) all confirmed that plans were being put in place for a full series. following the success of the Back to Earth specials commissioned by digital channel Dave and shown at Easter.

Danny John-Jules told fans: "They're talking to Dave about doing a new series. I've heard they're discussing six episodes."

Llewellyn said that he had been approached about it too and, along with Annett, confirmed that he was "very happy" at the prospect of a return of the show. There is no indication yet of when the show would be broadcast.

John-Jules also said he was thrilled at the success of the recent specials, which gave Dave (renamed Lister for the Easter weekend in honour of Red Dwarf's own Dave) their best ever ratings and outperforming much bigger channels including the BBC, the show's former home - a fact which gave him particular glee.

He told fans: "Coming back to do the specials was great. People were saying Red Dwarf was dead, that we wouldn't be able to do it, that it wouldn't be funny, that we wouldn't get into our costumes even. But there's something about always being the underdog. We overcame it. The BBC put three brand new shows on against our episodes when they were airing. And we whacked them all. We're very proud."

* The cast were appearing at the Better Than Life Red Dwarf convention. Organisers have already announced that following the success of the event there will be a second one in July 2010.

* Red Dwarf: Back to Earth The Director's Cut is out on DVD from today.

This is a personal article by Narin Bahar. Are you pleased about the prospect of more Red Dwarf? Were you at the convention and have more to add? Your thoughts welcome as always...

Well I hope that if they do make 6 new episodes they are better than the Back to Earth Easter specials. They made season/series 7 look funny!

Yeah, I've nothing against new Red Dwarf and I want it to suceed, but it needs new writers.

'Back To Earth' was just depressing.

I'm not against a proper return of the Dwarf crew but if the episodes aren't any better than the recent Back To Earth specials then they probably shouldn't bother.

I don't expect any new episodes to hit any of the highs of the first five series but I would at least like them to give me a laugh or two, if nothing else.

i love red dwarf, but back to earth showed that the writers can't go back to what they once were before they got a budget and became a show that relied on special effects instead of comedy. The last seasons were as funny as sean lock.

If red dwarf ever wants to be as big as they once were, get back the laugh track, lessen the budget so they don't rely on special effects, and for fraks sake, GET THE COMEDY BACK!

I'd be happier with three less episodes: has anyone got the mind bleach so I can erase the disappointment of Back to Life?

"has anyone got the mind bleach..."

Lol

If this is true I hope they go back to basics of the first two series, get it back to being character based. To be honest I thought the first 15/20 minutes of 'Back to Earth' was looking pretty good, then it all went very very wrong. Let's face it Naylor cannot write good Red Dwarf on his own, if Rob Grant refuses to reform the dreamteam, then bring someone else in. There has got to be some good young writers out there who can team up with Naylor? There's life in the old Dwarf yet IF it's tackled correctly!

Beautiful.

Now all we need are new seasons of Buffy and Deep Space Nine and S.F. TV will almost be worth watching again.

Rob Grant needs to come back and co-write the specials. If he doesn't want to do it, and I believe it's highly unlikely, then perhaps they should just let it die with some dignity (well, until the inevitable remake in another twenty years).

This is good news IF the episodes are funny. I've only seen part one of Back to Earth so far, but I wasn't really impressed. It wasn't completely dreadful, but it wasn't the show I was hoping to see either. And it really missed the laughter track.

You quite clearly have already used it since the episodes were called 'Back to Earth'.

FAIL.

After the dissapointment of the Easter specials I can't say I'm thrilled at the prospect of a return of Red Dwarf.

I just hope the producers and writers read the comments posted by fans and bring in new writers that can inject some fresh inventive storylines into the series.

I just hope they don't bring the studio audience back. Doug Naylor shouldn't take the comments of the stupid people onboard! "Waah! I don't know when to laugh because there isn't a studio audience!" Honestly, I want to ask how they cope with comedy films when they're shown on TV - do they really just sit there stony faced waiting for the credits? "That wasn't funny at all, there was no laughter going on. Dramatic stuff can never be funny, no. Red Dwarf should always just be flat out comedy with no breaks between laughing." Idiots.

Some comedy should be subtle. Red Dwarf should go the way Doug Naylor is currently taking it - towards subtlety and away from fools who want everything to be like series eight which can be roughly summarised as: "woo hoo! Look I am running in a funny way!!!!!!"

It seems the Dwarfers are mistaking viewing figures for approval. A programme with such a loyal audience as theirs returning after such a long absence was always going to do well in the ratings. If they genuinely think Back To Earth was up to the standards they set, I fear a new series would only further urinate on the burning carcass Red Dwarf became at Easter.

Personally I am all for a new series. Back to Earth was far from perfect, but all in all it is an improvement from Series VIII. Series VII was majorly worse than Series VI (oh my god, love that series!) and Series VIII was worse than VI. For once I am happy to see something better than its predecessor, not that is much of an accomplishment in this case.

The one thing that scares me to death is that Annet is being asked, based on this hearsay, to come back! HELL NO! I liked Back to Earth until she came in during Part Three (her Kochanski was one of the critical flaws of the post-Grant Red Dwarfs), and if she is in a new series, my expectations will be extremely low.

I do agree 100% that they need Rob Grant back, or at least another writer to work with Naylor (not that the goofs for VII did that great a job), and I also feel that they need another director (a lot of potentially funnier BTE jokes were hurt by Naylor as director's lack of comic timing). I personally feel that a laugh track would be nice, but I don't think it is mandatory (re-watch BTE a few times and you will get used to the lack of one). I also think that Naylor would be wise to poll the fans on what they would like, rather than doing it all himself (after all, that would make his life easier would it not?).

Finally, they do crow over the ratings a bit. However, Back to Earth was genuinely accepted and even loved by many and disliked or hated by many as well. The reaction was mixed, I say.

The red dwarf episodes were the best. I love the show as it was, nuthing beats the original

I hope they have many more seasons. Back to Earth was mostly plot, because it was not a full season it did not have a chance to stew in it's own comic juices like seasons of old. If they did a full season or at least 6 episodes it would be more relaxed and funnier. Honestly I don't care what kind of crap they throw up on the screen, as long as it resembles the show I love. You nay-saying critics remind me of Rimmer.
