BLOG A remake for Alien?

There's a rumour going around that Twentieth Century Fox plans to revisit the original Alien. Blogger Jamie Starbuck is not happy:

A remake for Alien?

Today a little part of me died. Here lies my respect.

Everyday I hold out hope that I won't be disappointed, that examples of the scorn with which humanity treats itself won't pile up in front of me but today I learned of the Giant Killer. The one single piece of news of such Godzilla mated with the Kraken proportions that my happy memories shall forever be scarred.

They're talking about remaking Alien.

www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/16328

Well, I say remaking. There's actually a bit of confusion over whether it's a remake or a prequel. Either way is this really what the franchise needs? Hmm? The answer is NO!

Further update: At Collider.com, Tony Scott confirms Carl Rinsch is going to direct an Alien prequel.

The article above is a personal piece by Jamie Starbuck. What do you make of all this Alien talk?

i think a new film in the series, as long as it is worth while and good, will be great but a remake would just crap all over AVP and the brilliance of the previous films.

I always though the story of what happened at Hadley's Hope after newts parents were infected and before the marines turned up might be pretty interesting

Can someone please tell me what's going on right now in hollywood. First a possible remake/reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then a revamp of Tomb Raider, now one of Alien. WHY, WHY, WHY???

Don't forget that Ridley Scott himself was once quoted as saying his idea for any future "Alien" film would be to do what happened on LV426 prior to the Nostromo arriving - that is, presumably find out what happened to the Space Jockey et al with the film ending with the Nostromo's arrival.

So if Ridley himself has thought it could work as an idea, then a prequel isn't probably such a bad idea...

Good god! What an awful idea! Next they'll making a Star Trek prequel - that's *bound* to be awful! Why can't people just make one film and be done with it? I think we deserve to know!

Considering Scott is co-producing, and hoping to bring onboard one of his Scott Free Production-prodigies, then I do have a little hope in this being special.

The daft bastards should come with some new stuff but like the banking system they seem to play it safe and in doing that don't produce anything that is even slightly interesting.

stop jumping to conclusions, as usual JS,
if you read what Ridley Scott has said himself you'll see he wants to do a prequel and he hates the idea of a remake

Was the blog cut short when the update from Total Film came in? It seems a bit short.

How about a follow up to Alien Resurrection in which an aging Ripley/clone teams up with the alien 'space jockey' race from the first film and we find out where the Aliens came from in the first place. Ripley and the Alien 'jockies' could fall back into time and crash on the world Ripley and the Nostromo found in the first film. The film ends as Ripley dies watching the new Mother Alien laying her eggs, dissolve to : 100 years later, (Footage from Alien) Kane touches the egg and is attacked by the face hugger. New footage, Kane is carried away and the camera pans to reveal a set of human bones- Ripley's. The End--the saga comes full circle.

If it's a remake, that'd be completely unnecessary. The original is damn near perfect and there are some films that just don't need to be remade. Psycho, Halloween, The Omen - all have been remade in recent years - all of which are substantial let-downs. A prequel might be interesting, but what'd be the point, really? Besides, the Alien movies are as much about Ripley as they are about Giger's creatures.

Damn you Hollywood. Why can't you know when to leave something alone?

An Alien remake? Oh my dear God above, no. Why? Does Hollywood really have to take classice films and remake everything? I swear, it's only a matter of time until we get a re-imagining of a certain galaxy far, far away.

Remake: no. Seriously, just no.

Prequel: not seeing the need. The aliens don't have an origin, they're just intelligent animals who evolved on a harsh planet somewhere. Finding out they were genetically engineered super-soliders by the space jockey elephant aliens wouldn't really add anything to the mythology, and I think would strip away the 'force of nature' element that makes the aliens scary. Or used to make them scary before Lame Sequelitis kicked in.

Full-scale alien war on Earth is probably the only real place left to take the franchise, and given the movie market today it would probably be a 12-rated lameass pice of cack with the screen washed in CGI. Going by Ridley Scott's recent work, it would also feature pointless retreds of his earlier work and he may feel compelled to recast Ripley with Russell Crowe. So, no.

"I always though the story of what happened at Hadley's Hope after newts parents were infected and before the marines turned up might be pretty interesting"

It was covered well enough in the special edition.

Short version: everyone but Newt died.

Long version: everyone but Newt died screaming with aliens bursting out of their chests.

I'm not seeing a vast narrative gap that needs to be filled here.

So it's a prequel eh?

Really not sure what the point of that would be. The backstory of the Aliens are best left unclear, IMHO. That's kinda why the film was called Alien - the title doesn't just refer to the monster running loose aboard The Nostromo, it sums up everything about the creature, it's nature, it's biology and it's origin. Same goes for the Space Jockeys. Soon as you make them more than a fleeting appearance of a fossil glued to a chair, it rather robs them of their mystery.

It's a bit like the god awful Psycho sequels and prequel they made. The audience don't really need to know WHY Norman Bates is a knife-wielding loon, it's enough to know that he IS.

Unless we're all wrong and this prequel turns out to be a sedate boardroom drama set at Weyland Yutani, where an evil middle manager plots to have The Nostromo redirected on its way home.

Haven't they learnt from those awful Alien vs Predator movies?
Just get Ridley Scott and Sigourney Weaver back on board and make a proper sequel!

It is defiantly a Prequel folks!

http://www.collider.com/2009/05/29/exclusive-tony-scott-confirms-carl-rinsch-is-directing-alien-and-its-a-prequel/

and don't judge before hearing any concrete information about the story and tone of the film. It may turn out to be amazing..
