Battlestar Galactica gets the chop

The rumours have been circulating for a while, but now it's official: Battlestar Galactica will come to an end once next year's 22 episodes have finished airing. Confirmation came in a statement by executive producers Ronald D Moore and David Eick to industry mag Variety.

"This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and, finally, an end," the statement reads. "Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end, and we've decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms."

The news doesn't come as a great surprise - although the series has (quite rightly) received enormous critical acclaim, it hasn't grabbed great ratings. We're just thankful that the Sci Fi Channel have stuck with the show long enough to give it a proper ending, rather than axeing it prematurely and leaving plot threads dangling.

The show is due to return for that fourth and final season in January. You'll have to excuse us now, we have to go and have a little cry.

Another one bites the dust!!!

Can't say i was over impressed with this revamp, the CGI cylons were rendered very well but I think making them look like humans was a copout.

The Curse of low ratings stikes again!!!!

I'm devastated. This really is The Best Show on television at the moment. My life will be a littler emptier without it.

But having said that, although my initial reaction was a resounding "NOOOOOO!!!!", I have to admit I am glad to see the series bow out gracefully at the right time, and not just hang on for the sake of the extra dollar. Plot threads spun out too long, pointless padding episodes just for the sake of keeping the show going, endless unresolved plot arcs can kill a series as surely as any axing.

Thanks to Moore and Eick for a beautiful, brilliant, intelligent show.
So say we all.

Cybos - not overly impressed?

BSG is the best Sci-Fi programme on tv. I'm sick of nay sayers like yourself constantly criticising something they dont understand. If you don't like it don't watch it. Lots of people do watch it, and that clearly proves it is the best programme on tv. You're opinion differs from mine, therefore you are obviously wrong.

Hmmm....who do i sound like.....??

Obviously not if it's been axed!!!!

Who is good, gets brilliant ratings!!!

See the difference.

Goodness me, you're not the brightest bulb in the box wolfsair.

Can't help if the majority rules can I!!!!

All good things come to an end...and BSG's been one of the best. Roll on Caprica and the Pegasus movie.

Wolfslair: I wouldn't worry what Cybos says - he thinks Pirates 3 is a good movie. That says it all

While I will be sad to see the show go I never thought it would last more than 4 seasons (after the end of season 3, anyway). But better to end with a proper resolution rather than cut down too soon or dragged out past any decent lifespan.

so long BSG, you will be missed.

And Cybos, no hard feelings man. We can't all love every show and I'll not slag you off for the hell of it.

Nothing lasts forever, and while I am a little sad to know that BSG will soon come to an end, I am glad they are going out while the show is still strong. Too many shows have go on for so long that you forget why you enjoyed them in the first place.

Still, I had always hoped to get a series 5. Caprica has some big shoes to fill.

I think it's great that the wonderful BSG will be finishing at the end of series four (or five, if you count the mini-series).

At least it won't get dull and bogged down by it's own mythology the way The X-Files and Buffy did.

BSG? I say live fast, die young and leave a good-looking series!

And anyway, there's always the proposed prequel spin-off thingy...

Great show and feel that four series is about right, a lot of shows tend to outstay there welcome and this show has made leaps and bounds but happy that it is being ended on purpose that way we'll get a proper conclusion

Thank God one of the greatest tv sci fi shows will get a (hopefully glorious) end. If it got strung out just to make the extra buck it would have been a great shame. At least we can have closure, so for one I'm happy not sad...Thanks guys.

Battlestar has been one of the best Sci-Fi shows of all time. There is nothing else on TV at the moment that comes anywhere close.

The Chief (Aaron Douglas) was at NZ's Armageddon conference a couple of months ago and he was also pretty sure that the show was coming to an end.

Very much a shocker but it couldn't go on forever and maintain such brain popping standards of quality. Let's just thank the Lords of Kobol that it will get a proper ending!

SO SAY WE ALL!

(WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!)

Well, I knew it had to end sooner or later and lets face it it's best to go sooner rather than later *looks evily at 'Lost'* Plus the way the last season ended, I doubt they could've pulled another top season after the final one.

It was good while it lasted and it'll be even better to see a good strong conclusion to whats been a fantasticly in depth science fiction television drama thats set a standard that only Heroes can follow.

:D

Leave Lost alone. LOL
However the plan to have 3 16 episode seasons of Lost to finish off instead of two 22 episode seasons really, really ticks me off.
Prats.

Lex, Pirates 3 is a good movie and judging by the amount of money it has amassed i'd say the majority agree.

Such petty jealousy, i am so sorry about BSG being axed but that he hand it has been dealt.

Now i have picked up all your toys and put them back in your pram.

DIDDUMS DID THE NASTY MAN UPSET YOU!!!

I was just looking over the news section again and the headline for this article made me stop and think a moment.

Can you say a series is getting the chop when it's decided to end bring itself to conclusion? I think the headline makes BSG sound like a failure when it's not. I'm not griping, just raising a point.

Anyway, just a thought.

Posted by Tibet Rising (127.0.0.1) on June 04, 2007 at 11:41 AM BST #

Good point Tibet Rising and one I'd thought myself
BSG isn't getting the chop, it's bowing out gracefully whilst the music still plays and the applause still thunders.

Posted by Liz (127.0.0.1) on June 04, 2007 at 02:46 PM BST #

I shall miss it, but it is good not to string something out for too long.

Better to bow out gracefully than disgracefully (unless you're me).

And Cybos, the more money something makes and the more people who watch it, makes it "good"?
Advertisers must love you. Enjoy watching Big Brother....

Posted by Clarry (127.0.0.1) on June 04, 2007 at 05:11 PM BST #

I think i'm going to cry!!
Hopefully they'll make the last season count and bow out in a way that stargate and so many others couldn't. And with a bit of luck the pegasus tv movie will be good to cushion the blow. Pity they're not doing caprica afterall, it could have been very good

Posted by Daithimor (127.0.0.1) on June 04, 2007 at 10:03 PM BST #

Actually clarry i do not watch big brother, i find a pile of drivel. If you look the ratings for this series has been on the slide for years, channel 4 only put it on to save putting anything decent on.

We live in a world where the majority rules, this is not my fault. As i said if BSG had garnered better ratings you probably would be looking at a season 5 and 6. It didn't so they are axing it. Not my fault, neither is my fault they i like popular programmes and films. The majority watch a programme or film which makes the money, and yes this film is good, i enjoyed it.

Now put the green eyed monster away and get over it, move on, take a walk in the sunshine.

Such bitterness is most unbecoming!!!!

Posted by Cybos (127.0.0.1) on June 05, 2007 at 08:54 AM BST #

Not being bitter at all. It would have been awful to drag out BSG when it is a tale with a natural end.

As for POTC3, I won't judge it because I haven't seen it yet.

Battlestar Galactica to continue?
Following comments made by Edward “Adama” Olmos and Katee “Starbuck” Sackhoff at the Saturn Awards on Thursday, it seems that the showrunners have not announced an end to the series.

Speaking about the soon-to-be-filmed fourth season, Olmos told IESB: “This will probably be the most extraordinary season of Battlestar, it’s the final season so, it’s definitely going to be the most vicious... You heard it first.”

However, executive producer David Eick refuted this, saying: "I promise you that when Ron [D Moore] and I make a decision about Galactica's future, we'll let you know."

Abit of a contradiction from the above, i think you will find if the sci-fi channel had said they would stand by BSG long term, this 4th season would not have been the last. You can go round the houses but the truth is because of the low ratings this show has had the chop. In the US ratings are very important, under perfoming programmes don't get a chance.

Posted by Cybos (127.0.0.1) on June 05, 2007 at 03:06 PM BST #

It's hard to understand how a very average show like SG1 can get as far as ten seasons (I watch it, it's fun, but it ain't so great) yet something as dynamic, beautifully written, directed, scored and acted as BSG only survives to a fourth season. It must be something to do with poor taste amongst the US viewing public. I mean, after all, these are the same people who preferred Star Trek: Voyager over Star Trek: Deep Space 9!

It's a shame to see BSG go, but at least we will have closure.
