Avatar Preview in Time Magazine

James Cameron’s Avatar

For an article on 3D movie-making for Time Magazine, writer Josh Quitter was lucky enough to see preview clips of James Cameron’s new SF blockbuster Avatar, to be released later this year. And he seems mightily impressed.

“The film is set in the future, and most of the action takes place on a mythical planet, Pandora. The actors work in an empty studio; Pandora's lush jungle-aquatic environment is computer-generated in New Zealand by Jackson's special-effects company, Weta Digital, and added later. I couldn't tell what was real and what was animated--even knowing that the 9-ft.-tall blue, dappled dude couldn't possibly be real. The scenes were so startling and absorbing that the following morning, I had the peculiar sensation of wanting to return there, as if Pandora were real.”

He also describes a scene he witnessed from a new 3D version of Titanic: "The luxury liner is nearly vertical, starting its slide into the black Atlantic, and Leonardo DiCaprio is hanging on for life, just like always. But this time, I am too. The camera pans to the icy water far below, pulling me into the scene--the sensation reminds me of jerking awake from a dream – and I grip the sides of my seat to keep from falling into the drink. Most of us have seen the top-grossing film of all time. But not like this. The new version, still in production, was remade in digital 3D, a technology that's finally bringing a true third dimension to movies. Without giving you a headache.”

pure, hyperbolic bullplop. This film is going to dissapoint, weta do not have any secret technology that others don't posses. I will hate this film no matter what they do.

There is nothing like an open mind and that of course is nothing like an open mind.

James Cameron films usually deserve a watch,
the abyss, aliens and especially the first terminator were all good films,
and titanic for all it's flaws has saved me from insomnia on numerous occasions

Why do so many filmmakers feel like they have to digitally control everything- hasn't mother nature made jungles already, and there is no better special effect than nature. Just watch a few episodes of Planet Earth to see that! The films' quality, like any other film's , will be the quality of it's screenplay. Give me an epsiode of Classic Dr. Who with its' great scripts and cheesy effects over The Phantom Menace anyday. Avatar will be worth seeing, but only if it's a good story worth telling. I trust Cameron will create a memorable film.

I certainly am very excited by Avatar but I still hope that for all the technological breakthroughs that the film promises, character and story won't take a back seat.
I have no doubt that James Cameron can pull of an 'event' movie but I fear that the studio may push for more spectacle over substance.
You only have to look at the drop off in ticket sales for the Watchmen to realise that the attention span of the average movie goer doesn't lend itself to complex story arcs.
Hopefully optimistic though.

We have seen NOTHING from this film yet all the fanboys are proclaiming it the greatest thing ever. The fx will be enhanced by the nature of 3d I am sure, but still will be cg no greater than what ILM, Digital Domain etc can produce. For over 300 million dollars and 5 years of developement it should look good, but Cameron is guilty on many occasions of cliche and mawkishness. My anticipacion has gone full circle to outright hostility now. The film can do nothing but dissapoint me. You think your making the greatest film event ever? Prove it.

Fuck this film and Cameron and Weta.
